I use Thunderbird IMAP with Internode and have never had any of the problems mentioned above.
I am surprised to hear it! Remember when using Thunderbird that you always need to keep the inbox empty.
Use the firefox addon MultiXpunge, and use it every day to compact and purge the folders.

you need to keep the inbox empty? Why? So MultiXpunge moves it to other folders or something?

When mail comes to the inbox, move it to other folders that you have made yourself. It is the one most important thing about using Thunderbird. Keep the inbox empty, and use Xpunge to compact and empty all folders. Use it often.
Here is a link that explains why:

And a link to the Xpunge addon:

Can Thunderbird apply filters to the inbox?

I use the Internode filters to filter mail into specific folders.

Interesting... was that difficult to set up? I have a lot of filters to set up.

Not difficult at all. The difficult part is finding it on the Internode website. Start by logging in, then look for email configuration, then mail filtering.

The xpunge thing seems to be working now - thank you!

Glad it is working and you are very welcome :D
