Let's say you buy one of those for 1800 today
I agree with you the value proposition starts to detoriate if you pay 1800. I ordered one for 1648 that will be delivered next week through amazon.
It was more the suriety of a bird in the hand. Even 5080 stock is looking pretty sparce, and you can bet the MSRP cards and those lower down the product line head out the door fairly quickly.
I will probably still try to snag one, if I get it I will cancel the 4080 S. But if I don't get one then there is a heap of uncertaintiy about restock timelines, tarrifs impacting cards etc.
Go for glory then. 5090 or bust!!!!
I've considered it but I'm not a fan of the power consumption and heat output
Why not? The 5080 is going to be a huge upgrade over my 1080Ti. You want me to wait two years for the 6000 series? No thanks.
But why would you buy a 5080 over a 4070ti super?
People lining up in Japan for a chance at a lottery to buy a 5000 series GPU lol. Wonder what their stock is like over there. I thought the 5090 isn't being sold there?
But why would you buy a 5080 over a 4070ti super?
Timing, performance, cost and desire. The 4000 series didn't suit me so I skipped it. The 4000 series came out in November 2022, then was refreshed in January 2024. I wasn't interested in upgrading to the 4000 series, and now I'm interested in upgrading again, there's something better, so why not get that? The 5080 has the same MSRP as the 4080 did.
Being conservative with the sites crashing and load issues lol. Happened on both the 30 and 40 launches.
Fair lol. I still think 10 minutes TBH.
Gotta be honest I’m not buying a 5000 series card but will be tuning in later for the drama. =P
Good luck fellow WP comrades.
I'll probably be up as well. Can't normally sleep until like 3-4 am anyway these days.
Timing, performance, cost and desire.
But isn't the 5080 basically double what you can get a 4070ti super at the moment? The 4080 was also a bad card at launch, and the 5080 looks much the same. Lol you can get an entire PC with a 7800X3D/4070ti Super for around the price of the 5080, dats crazy.
I get the 5090 if money doesn't matter, but the 5080 just seems plain old bad
I don't really get this. Let's say you buy one of those for 1800 today. There's not a bad chance that you could nab a 5080 for 2100 tonight. +10% plus multi frame generation (for whatever that is worth – little admittedly). If that $300 is worth more than -10% then by all means go for the 4080 super, but I don't really understand why they are rushing out the door today.
That means you are paying +16.7% for +10% in performance, plus frame generation. The 5080 won't run much cooler than a 4080 Super based on the recent reviews out there. So you are essentially giving away 6.7% in price increase, unless you believe multi-frame generation being worth the 6.7%. The 4080 Super already has regular frame generation.
I get the 5090 if money doesn't matter, but the 5080 just seems plain old bad
This is true, but even if money doesn't matter, you likely won't be able to get a 5090 tonight, or in the next few batches of shipments. I remember the 4090 price dropped about 1.5 years in, during Black Friday sales. Maybe that is when I will look to purchase a 5090, or wait for the 6090 (and buy that one 1.5 years into its lifecycle).
I remember the 4090 price dropped about 1.5 years in, during Black Friday sales.
Didn't need to wait that long. There was small discounts within weeks, and by April 2023 (so around 6 months post launch) you could pick one up for under $2600 on sale.
That means you are paying +16.7% for +10% in performance, plus frame generation.
That's true, I think I just demonstrated how out of touch I can be sometimes thinking $300 would be a trivial increase in cost to get +10%.
Fair lol. I still thing 10 minutes TBH.
We shall see :D
I managed to get mine 3 seconds after launch (strix 3090). Luckily, at a not so known retailer. A friend nabbed a EVGA 3090 too same first minute.

Well said. Newer card all the way.

Yeah, it is, but I didn't get a 4000, 3000 or 2000, so why get something that's already depreciated, from a generation I've already skipped? A 4070Ti is a solid card, maybe one of the better ones for longevity since the 1080Ti, but it doesn't have the performance I'd like.

I already have a 7800X3D though.
I get the 5090 if money doesn't matter
I agree, but it does matter to me, and I'm not ready to make the switch to 4K. Too many compromises involved.
Gotta be honest I’m not buying a 5000 series card but will be tuning in later for the drama. =P
Same. Not giving grubby Nvidia money for these no value cards. + 1440p is life for me, so it just isn't required. I hope the guys that do want them in this topic are able to get them. Maybe the 5080 will be an easy grab because it really is bad value. Although, that is putting faith into people to research products before they buy. So with that said – all stock will be gone within 10 minutes.
Well said. Newer card all the way.
That's a lot of money for a newer card though. If the performance difference was anywhere near the doubling of the price, I'd agree. But like 20-30% better for 100% cost? Seems crazy, but each to their own
Only 10pm here in the west, but I'm not going to jump in, since I don't have room for my new set up until we move, I've got a few months to let the dust settle! I am back to thinking I will go 5090 and 4k 360hz monitor though...

Or people value things differently.
As far as hobbies go, gaming and upgrading every 3-4 years etc is still relatively cheap compared to many other hobbies.
Life is short, gotta enjoy what you can while you can.
I gotta agree with the 4070 Ti Super being the best value card at $1300. It really isn’t even that much slower than the 4080S.
*edit. Especially so given the 4080 Supers have been bumped up in price.
48 in stock at Umart right now. Curious to see how that changes overnight.

Bro, with all due respect... A lot of people don't care about the price and just want the product, it's less than half their weekly earnings. Unfortunately many don't understand this lol. This is why they sell. Otherwise they'd be sitting on shelves unsold.

This.
