Those like Gigabyte's Eagle, MSI's Ventus and ASUS' Dual tend to be much lower cost-oriented by way of using lots of plastic
Yep I probably wouldn't go Eagle if I was stupid enough to spend $2.5K on a 4080 (or even more for a 4090), at that sort of money just spring for a few hundred bucks more and get what you "really want". The Gigabyte Gaming OC on the other hand is a every good model for both the RTX 3000 and 4000 series but yea plastic shrouds still a thing, mind due most cards are installed shroud down, I see the looks of the back plate as more important as that's what most people can see.

4080 sale on now at Umart!
Save hundreds!
LOL! no one's buying
Even the RRP Eagle is discounted by a whopping $20 from $2219 to only $2199. What a deal.
Yeah no one is buying this rubbish.
NVIDIA really overpriced these cards, even the 3000 series was priced somewhat decently when first launched
No it wasn't priced somewhat decently. The 3080 was priced extremely well at $700 RRP same RRP as the 2080 but 60-70% faster.
Even if the 4080 was $700 RRP, it would still be worse value than the 3080 because it's not 60-70% faster. At $1200 RRP it's DOA, Nvidia needs to un-launch it and re-launch as 4070 for $600. The previously un-launched 4080 12gb should be relaunched as 4060ti for $400. Only then the 4000 series would be as good value as the 3000 series.
Not going to happen obviously, so all the 4080's will continue sitting on shelves collecting dust. EVGA is laughing.

The 40 series have obviously been priced to sell 30 series stock, NVIDIA will be making huge margins on these cards.
Clearly Steve from GN gave Nvidia an easy out blaming it on user error entirely. Only time will tell if this is the only reason they were melting.
blaming it on user error entirely.
He also talked about the connector design having some deficiencies which make it easy for a user to believe they have fully seated when it fact it hasn't mechanically latched. It is user error in that sense but the design of the connector certainly doesn't help which is what he said.
Reducing the length of the sense pins and also making a better mechanical latching system would reduce the chance of user error.

Lines up with about what I'd consider buying at. I guess $800 USD would end up maybe $1600 here. Currency conversion, GST plus AU mystery tax.
Zotac 4080 in stock on new egg US. That means scalpers have turned their bots off.
Yeah less than $2100 delivered if you use the crypto code in a metro area.

The US market is a real anomaly in recent years with supply seemingly worse than other developed markets., I can't imagine scalpers were overly interested in 4080 due to likely low demand, if there were takers they are going to get burnt :p
Looks like the 4080 Eagle still has a vapour chamber so should still perform very well. No need to spend more on a 4080 than that.

Interesting that Nvidia blame the user for incorrect insertion but will warranty the card no matter what, kinda says Nvidia are not responsible... but actually are. Then they tell users to insert the cable before installing the card to make sure it fully seated. Also Gamers Nexus inserted the cable so you hear a click then the next time they did it you don't hear it latch.

I seriously can't see anyone buying these 4080s at that price point. What are they thinking?? Just get a 4090.
Yeah if you are buying 4080's at those prices you definitely aren't strapped for cash. Might as well buy the real McCoy and get the 4090.

Gamers Nexus came to the same conclusion re cause of the issue.
The honouring warranty claims is damage control. The small number of claims is cheap compared to the possible lost sales if they didn’t.

Gamers Nexus came to the conclusion that majority of issue is user error but that it's a flawed design that makes it easy to make an error. So, both are accountable in my opinion.
Well I called it and I'm sure there's a lot of angry faced people who were hodling
"Anyone buying a 3xxx card is an idiot, don't pay these ridiculous scalper prices because 4xxx is just around the corner, I'm sure that somehow this means that I'll get better performance at a cheaper price and it'll be a much better deal. It's literally impossible to even fathom that might not be the case"
The thing is though, NVIDIA have killed their golden goose without realising it. Quite possibly the biggest reason they sold so many 2xxx/3xxx cards at such a premium was you could simply run NiceHash on the thing
I don't think mining was the main driving factor in the huge premium markups due to shortages, but it definitely did justify the price when you can get at least 50% of the purchase price back (often free and even profitable). This would have shifted substantial volume regardless of the price itself
Now they're delusional in thinking the market will adopt such high prices because their sales figures have been way out of whack. From a business perspective they did the exact opposite of what they should have done – never implement LHR and pushed to keep Eth as PoW (maybe they were doing so in the background and failed, who knows). They should have also made the 4xxx series much slower than it currently is, and been able to sell it cheaper
The people who blamed mining on high prices and thought it'd all be magically fixed are still screwed either way, for at least another 3 years until we see the next generation. Possibly longer because if the idea is to bring prices down then NVIDIA can't release a 5xxx card that is slower. ¾ series are too fast as it is and do cost a lot to manufacture. It'll have to be faster in order to sell, so to bring the cost down it would take quite some time to develop faster yet cheaper chips and memory
The idea for these consumers was that 4xxx would release for 1/3rd the current pricing which would drive 3xxx prices way down, that isn't the case. Forget about it as it's never gonna happen. High prices are here to stay both new and used for the foreseeable future

Yes the 12VHPWR connector is crap as it shouldn't work if only partially inserted enough to melt and can also leave people thinking its locked in when it isn't.
They should have also made the 4xxx series much slower than it currently is, and been able to sell it cheaper
with what amd have coming they couldn't do this
any particular reason for this ?
Pretty much what bitpushr said about those bottom end SKU's, really if its and Eagle/Ventus/ ASUS Dual, it should be no more then MSRP.
As for Gigabyte, personal choice. Not been totally happy with them, so went with other options on my most recent build. But as always, everyone else is likely to have a different experience.
Hello there Whirlpooleans,
Does anyone know what 4090 card is the best 1 out on the market yet?
Or are more coming out that it's too early to tell at this stage?
Going by this website https://videocardz.net/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4090 (which shows the specs of cards,) it indicates that these 4 cards have the highest boost clock.
MSI GeForce RTX 4090 24GB SUPRIM X.
MSI GeForce RTX 4090 24GB SUPRIM X LIQUID.
ASUS GeForce RTX 4090 24GB ROG STRIX OC.
COLORFUL GeForce RTX 4090 24GB iGame Neptune OC
That isn't to say they are the "best" but out of all the cards, the ASUS GeForce RTX 4090 24GB ROG STRIX OC is the most popular 1 of the lot so far.
I only ask since I am still sitting pretty with my 2 X MSI GeForce RTX 2080Ti Gaming X Trio in SLI. (when possible) which still to this day supplies me with enough FPS in games when playing on my Acer Predator X34P monitor.
Most likely will upgrade the monitor to the Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 G85SB when it comes out.
Which having a 4090 and 13900K (still rocking the 9900K) in hand to take advantage of the monitor.
But that is another thing to mention in a different thread/post elsewhere.
Kind regards,
Luca.
