Currently waiting on my Raspberry Pi 4 4gb to turn up. Can anyone recommend a good 64-bit linux distro that supports the 4 yet, or are we waiting for the new kernel revisions to get picked up?
Raspbian
How usable is the 64-bit kernel? My understanding is that the 64-bit kernel is available for bleeding edge testers, but isn’t ready for prime time yet.

Yeah my understanding of raspbian was that while there was a 64-bit kernel available, the userland is still all 32-bit

Try sakaki's 64-bit Gentoo build:

Pretty much, but I haven't found any issues with it so far.
Hi, Looking for some advise here.
I've an old Rpi2 running piHole on my network. It also runs my ambilight Leds on my TV but that's only when I watch some movies and not every time. It's running Raspbian Stretch and I was wondering if there's any issues upgrading to the latest version of Buster (being an old board).
Also planing on testing this on it:
https://pypi.org/project/gphotos-sync/
given the changes in google functionality around backing up google photos.
any advise against this?
Can I prepare a new SD card on a different pi (3B+) and then place it on the old pi2?

I would think it very unwise to attempt to set up a memory card card in something that does not have identical specs. I have come unstuck in the past trying this.
Best to take a new spare memory card and install that in your old Pi2 with a new image. That way you can simply swap back to the old card if things don't work out.
In my case I have a spare Pi3B+ and have multiple cards for it so that I can swap between them, and if I nuke something while experimenting, nothing is lost because my operational cards were safely elsewhere.
I think that the kernel images have multiple dtbs embedded with them so they can handle multiple boards, but I'm not sure if the rootfs would be portable between them. (Although I suspect it *might* be)

I definitely plan to use a different card. I was hoping I can install raspbian, piHole, and a few scripts and then move the card from the new pi3B+ to the old Pi2. But I guess nothing is critical on the pi2 at the moment so probably just have some piHole outage for an hour or so.

I think so too. Based on this wiki raspbian buster is compatible with all the boards.
i run dietpi on my pi 3b as i dont like the need to attach it to my tv to get ssh enabled which isnt by default with raspbian and thus never used that distro. very odd way of doing things when most of us server tinkerers would be using it headless.

Hey mate, you can just add an empty ssh file to the boot folder to get ssh enabled. It is then not necessary to connect to tv.
Just thought I would let you know.

And you can edit a file after burning the SD card to enable and connect to WiFi upon insertion and power up of the Pi. Search online for the details.

yeah add VNC access etc.
ah ok, ill look into it next time round. at the moment its my mail server and will not be touched for the foreseeable future – just found it odd to be off by default is all.
Hello all
I've just ordered myself a Pi 4 and assorted bits. First step into the Pi world.
My initial intention is to run Pi Hole and Home Assistant. However, I'm also looking around for other ideas of what I can do with it that might be useful.
Common uses that I don't need are: music streamer (got one), video streamer (got one), torrent box, mail or web server, diy nas. Happy to get other ideas though!
WireGuard
That's a good use case. I already have a subscription to NordVPN and it looks like they are working on incorporating the wireguard protocol instead of openvpn, so I might wait to see what happens there. I've survived this long without needing to access my network while out, a bit longer won't hurt.

I run PiVPN on the same Pi as Pi Hole, not sure if it will sit comfortably with Home Assistant though.
If you are interested in aviation run an ADS-B radar box (you will need a USB TV stick). Will let you see the planes flying around your area for up to 250 odd km if you have a reasonable location / antenna. If you run one of the configs put out by the likes of Flightaware and FlightRadar24, and connect the box to the internet they will reward you with an Enterprise License to their main site where you can get all the flight details for the planes in your area and all over the world.
