Visicalc was the killer app, for the PC.
Email was the killer app, for dialup.
What is the killer app for the NBN?
What is the killer app for the NBN?
There isn't one.
The NBN is a platform, so if there's a "killer app" for it, it's the business/social/broadcasting opportunities that a ubiquitous, high bandwidth network across Australia would provide.
What opportunities are they? Let your imagination run riot.
What is the killer app for the NBN?
What do the Koreans use their fiber for? Also aren't there some European countries that have something like a fiber NBN? Perhaps they are all waiting for us Aussies to innovate and produce the new killer app?
*edit*
Probably the killer app will be home made HD porn.
What do the Koreans use their fiber for?
Huge amounts of online gaming, they're addicted to it apparently.

The killer app is going to be video like youtube and other VOD services.
And this is going to help GDP how exactly?

And this is the problem I see with the NBN. OK great, lets have 1Gbps fibre to the premises. But what, exactly, are we going to use it for?
Businesses that see a need for fibre already have it. Government departments (ie: Health) that need fibre already have it. But the important thing here is need.
Every sucessful technology always has to have a killer app that make people not just want it but need it. What is this Killer App for the NBN? How many people desperately want more Youtube, or video calls or whatever? I have the ability to make and receive Video calls already, but the novelty wears off after a while?
Everyone keeps saying but we don't know what the "next big thing" might be and that new things will come along to use it, but what exactly?
This "Build it and they will come" mentality never works particularly well in practise – there MUST be a demonstrated demand for something before it is built for it to be truely successful.
But what, exactly, are we going to use it for?
HD real time video chat.
HD real time conferencing with multiple people.
*AVOIP (Audio-Video Over IP)
*Streaming media
*smart grid/Smart house/Smart building
what killer applications to support Telecommuting?
*AVOIP (Audio-Video Over IP)*Streaming media*smart grid/Smart house/Smart building
NBN not required.
Probably the killer app will be home made HD porn.
Seeing as how you couldn't refrain from raising the prospect, does that imply you have some concept of how you're going to do it, and may I ask if it will be commercially available, from where, how much an hour (or 10 minutes maybe enough) and will you be in a starring role?

HD real time video chat.
HD real time conferencing with multiple people.
Again, probably not for the majority of consumers.
Could be very useful for businesses though, which may be why many businesses already do this. In fact, without government assistance, this would tend to grow and develop over time.
Even without a Fibre connection, DSL is fast enough for video chats (low quality, but if done correctly will work OK)
Why do we need to run copper wire to every ones house just so they can talk to someone they can't see, when they could just go to the post office and send a Telegram.
When the phone lines where put in place, no one even thought it would be used the way they are now.
You may not be able to see what the use of it is now, but what about in 10 years time, 20 years time.
*AVOIP (Audio-Video Over IP)
*Streaming media

All available without the NBN now. I mean, a smart grid would get by with dial-up (not even 56k dialup would be needed).
Basically what I'm saying is – no one has come up with the killer app that justifys rolling it out to everyone for $43 billion. Some cool gadgets (don't get me wrong, some very cool ideas), but nothing that everyone would make use of just yet.
Hell, MSN is still the "most popular" website in Australia. Mostly because its the default on IE and many people don't evey know it can be changed. And these people will make use of 1Gbps how???
