I've just taken delivery of a 19" Hanns-G HW191D widescreen monitor, supporting up to 1440X900 resolution, only to discover that my computer doesn't give me the option to choose that setting (it only goes up to 1280x768). Here is my PC spec:
Asus - P5VD2-MX Motherboard
Chipset - Northbridge VIA P4M890
Southbridge VIA VT8237A
Adapter - VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP
In the motherboard manual it states that, "VGA Support max. resolution to 2048x1536 (@75Hz), so I assumed I'd be able to get the 1440x900 I require, but to no avail.
Incidentally, I've loaded the newest driver for the integrated VIA graphics card and also for the monitor, but none of these give me what I want.
Is it not possible for me to get the resolution I require, by going into the BIOS for example, or should I give up the ghost and by a new graphics card instead? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Regards....!
you prett much need to give up. When that video card was made (long ago) widescreen was proberly unheard of, so it does not support any widescreen resulutions.

rather interesting that a recent motherboard does not support widescreen tho...
anyway, as the motherbaord has a PCI-E slot, you can get any of the new video cards and it will work. (just not the old AGP cards)
as to which one is cheapest andsupports widescreen, I can not help there.

Althou a 3rd party app like Craigus writes... Did you try powerstrip ? is worth a try or else if that fails ur very next step... :-)
I hope u checked out the maximum resolutions whatever ur getting, well @ least better be PCI-e card and u should be laughing all the way !!
Im helping a friend who just bought a PC with this MB & Benq 19" WS monitor.
I cannot get WS resolutions and find it so hard to believe that a new MB wont support this, also that a PC shop sold him this package if it wont work together.
Anyway, seems there is a new VGA driver listed on Asus site in January....Is this likely to fix the problem ?
