Continually tap the key while turning on the computer.

If it doesn't work, it could be that the recovery partition has been removed. This usually happens if Windows was re-installed using a standard install disc.

well i have been tapping the f9 key like i was playing teken at the arcades back in the day.. lol

i know it has the 160gb hdd and it get partitioned down the centre for some reason when installing the OS now i think we did it before BUT we used a recovery dvd (using external optical drive) or a USB, i really can not remember.
but the point is that windows and everything is installed on c: and d: is almost empty so i think a recovery p[arition is not on the hdd unless its something else.

Asus does that in the factory so users can store data on a partition that's seperate from the operating system, allowing the operating system to be re-installed without affecting user data.

The recovery partition usually doesn't have a drive letter so it doesn't appear in My Computer. It might only be visible in Disk Management.

I think you should give up on the recovery. If you need to re-install Windows you'll need a copy of the Windows install disc matching the product key sticker underneath the laptop.

[from the OP] im am taking it over as my old one is a bit out of date now....

Your old computer must have been bad if this netbook is an improvement. Windows XP is very outdated now, and so is the Atom N270 cpu. My advice would be to get something new.

My old laptop which still works but has a few minor issues like battery not working at all and keyboard physical damage.

Specs.

Lg lw40

Centrino 1.6 mhz
1gb plus 512mb ram.
40 gb ide hhd

So a 1000h eeepc does sound better already with a 160gb hdd and battery with 3 to 4 hours usage.
