I'll flying over to Singapore in a about month and want see if I can buy a couple of canon lenses while I'm there. Can anyone suggest anything. Recommended shops etc. Thanks in advance.
When I was there last year, I actually found them more expensive than in Australia. So do your research first.
I did pick up my most recent L lens in Tokyo, which I got for 55% of Aussie RRP.
I recommend you buy it in Aus and claim gst on departure.
Works out cheaper!
I believe you will have to pay that back when you re-enter if you reside in Australia.
Depends how long he is staying overseas for..
Anyway, the lens price in Aus is still cheaper I reckon. Accessories are cheaper in Singapore though.

Customs will rarely pick you up on this. They are more concerned about quarantine, illegal immigration and drug traffickers.

Particularly if you have actually used the lens and aren't carrying it in it's new boxes.

Damn there goes my idea of trafficing some illegal immigrants ... lol

Goto Sim Lim Towers at Beach Road.
Make sure you do your research first though as they do tend to rip people off unless you are ready to haggle to get to the pricing you are after.
Canon Lenses have international warranty so it doesn't matter where you get it from.
Check out www.d-d-photographics.com.au as they do parallel imports and you can claim GST on your way out. I bought my Canon lens from them and it was about $200 cheaper than Teds Camera.
Not sure how much cheaper it would be though in Singapore as their currency is a lot stronger compared to a year ago (i think it's A$1 = $1.12)

+1
Best place for tech in Singapore. 4 floors if I remember correctly, all dedicated to technology.
They do however try to rip you off like dingduck said.
When I went last year the AUD was higher than the SGD and lens and camera prices were high. HKG might be better.

Actually it's 7 levels (basement included) of pure Geek shopping :)

And sorry it was actually Sim Lim Square instead of Tower (i think Tower is across it)
I"ve been to Sim Lim, but I prefer Funan IT Mall, and in particular John 3:16 (strange name for a camera shop) but really good guys, that do right by the customers, unlike some of the more unsavouries you might run into in Sim Lim or Lucky Plaza etc.
The place that I go to is Lords at Lucky Plaza.
Enter the Plaza from Orchard Rd by going up the front steps. The shop is near the back right hand corner. Very small place but good prices compared to the other shops that try to rip you off.

Not all of Canon's lenses have an international warranty. AFAIK only the 'L' series has an international warranty.

I bought a normal IS USM lens (70mm – 300mm) and it has international warranty on it.
I wished i could afford a L series lens
Guys many thanks for all your replies. I'll check the prices in Singapore and if I find a good deal I'll buy it. Check these two sites out. I bought 3 lenses from Camera-land and they had the best prices at that time( Last October). Also bought a Sigma 10-20mm (A$ 802) from https://www.camerasdirect.com.au really good service and fast shipping.
Can anybody thats been to Singapore mention some good camera stores to visit please?
I've been there once and plan to go again. The first time I never thought about looking at camera lens prices.

See the clubsnap price list posted at the start of this thread.
Personally i like John3:16 at Funan Lifestyle Mall.
I have bought items there 3 (lx3, 40d, 24-105L) times now and never had a problem.
Always kind and courteous and never puts any pressure for you to buy.
Be warned though it can get very busy there and you could be waiting
for ages. Also he is not the cheapest on price but he is genuine.
you can also get your GST refund as well
but generally any of the stores mentioned on Clubsnap are legit and trustworthy..

Any chance you can whim me to let me know how much you paid for your 40d? I've got the same camera and just want to see how much cheaper it is over there as I've only recently gone into SLR's and haven't stopped over in Singapore since my new hobby :)
I was recommended – of all places – Harvey Norman! a couple of times whilst I was there a couple of weeks ago.
I even saw one of there full-page ads in the local paper.
To say I was surprised, would be very understated indeed. And I kept looking over my shoulder, waiting for someone to jump out from somewhere and confirm that they were just taking the piss, and filming me in the process :(
Can't say I got to the store to have a look, but it could quite easily be better than the shopping experience I was having at Sim Lim Square.

Wow never thought that HN can offer good pricing. The store manager must have gotten laid that day and didn't care about profits :)

I'd second John 3:16. Excellent staff, good (but not great) range, and good prices.
If you're in Sim Lim then Alan Photo Trading on the ground floor is good too, and has a better range than John 3:16.
Be _very_ careful buying anything photo/electrical in Singapore. There are some very good merchants, and some very shady ones. Before you buy anything be 100% sure what should be in the box, and make sure that it's actually there. Some shops will remove things like batteries (or replace them with lower quality ones and try and charge you more for the better ones), lens caps, cases, etc.
And remember that with most shops you can get most (but not all) of the Singapore GST back at the airport – but you need to ask for additional paperwork when you actually buy it, unlike in Australia where you just need the receipt.
Ive just come back from South East Asia, before I left I was warned that electronic type items arent any cheaper.
I bought a compact digital camera before I left from Australia and an already cheap price.
In Singapore I went to a mall in the city, I cant remember what its called but it was a place with many electronic / camera stores. The salespeople would try selling you stuff as soon as they see you as a westerner. Anyway I enquired about my camera and at one store their price was less than my already reduced price I bought it from in Oz.
I found that although many prices are either nothing flash or on par with prices here, you can certainly knock off a hell of alot through haggling. I got batteries for less than half their asking price and my mate got a lens down 60% from their asking price.
