Well done, great pricing too. Your choice of exchanges sucks though. :-)

I notice that the pricing is close to what someone had suggested in another thread (sorry, forget who it was) whereby you pay a base rate then $x per gb. The [unbundled] plans almost all work out to $29.90 base plus $1 per gb. The exceptions are the 2gb plan for $29.90 and the 75gb plan for $99.90.

I wonder if you could use a model where the above suggestion does apply and users could basically choose their own allowance, be it 7gb or 33gb? Too hard to manage?

Mount Gravatt, Queensland is listed here : /forum-replies.cfm?t=968342#r2
but on on aaNet's: www.aanet.com.au/sales.html page ADSL1 is the only service available when I enter my number. (just around the corner from the exchange) :-)
Any ideas when it will be activated ?

Yeah I really don't understand why?

Why would you invest in an exchange that already has providers for ADSL2+ and therefore have lots of competition.

Why not invest in exchanges with no equipment, that way you have a captive audience, all eagerly awaiting to move to ADSL2+.

I wish any company other than Telstra would come to our exchange, currently no-one does ADSL2+.

Because there are good reasons why no-one services some exchanges, including the exorbitant (read monopoly) pricing of Telstra backhaul.

For me it shows the followings:

# This change of plan will require a Port Configuration. The cost of which is $89.00.
# The cost for a plan change is $20.00.
# Total cost for this change is $109.00.
# The change and charges will be applied on your next billing date, which is 2008-06-05

The cost is supposed to be $59 no matter what plan you are moving from, and no matter what ADSL2 plan you are moving to.

www.aanet.com.au/pricing.html

# Migrate from ADSL1 to ADSL2+: $59

Because the costs of providing that service using our own network is far lower than using the Telstra Network.

The port cost is lower - and faster.

The cost to deliver a GB to a customer is lower, as we don't have to pay Telstra's AGVC 'tax' adding a large part to the cost of data.

We are able to offer a 2G plan, and still turn over a reasonable profit using our own network - it is simply not possible with Telstra at the moment.

Hey,

I'm connected to the South Oakleigh exchange in VIC which is listed as active for launch according to the list in the other topic.

When I punched my number here though www.aanet.com.au/sales.html it tells me that only ADSL services are available in my area but it actually linked to this.

• Standard ADSL1 services are available in your area - Click to view plans.
www.aanet.com.au/adsl2_p...b%3E%3Ca%20href=

Clicking on that link takes me to this.

I'm assuming theres a problem somewhere with the exchange lookup?

With Telstra promoting their High Speed plans via Bigpond and Business Broadband you'd really think they'd stop milking ISP's with their ADSL port charges when they won't allow wholesale of ADSL2+ ports?

I wish I hadn't moved from Coorparoo two years ago from a broadband point of view, but it's lovely up here in Sandgate. Maybe one day we can join all you ADSL2+ lucky ba$tards.

Yianni,

On another thread, they said to log on to your account and click onto "change plan" - it should show which company's hardware your line's connected to at the exchange.

If you're on Eftel equipment then you should be able to change straight away. If not, then you'll have to wait for them to migrate you over (assuming the stuff's been installed and working).

An interesting observation made by many I presume.
In another year or so, a couple of hundred exchanges will be chock full of equipment from a dozen companies all fighting to make a quid from the few thousand customers available in each exchange whilst another exchange only a few km away will be deemed unviable and only have telstra.

I wonder if any would be brave enough to take the plunge on being the only 3rd party supplier in a marginal exchange?
When there are 2 or 3 other companies in any 1 exchange wouldn't that exchange become potentially unviable?

There are too many ISPs in Australia atm - a few rounds of consolidation won't hurt, and might actually increase competition.

I wonder if any would be brave enough to take the plunge on being the only 3rd party supplier in a marginal exchange?

It's difficult for a company with small capitalisation to take risks like that (the vast majority of Aussie ISPs would fit in this category). Also, many of these exchanges are actually capped by Telstra, which adds a large amount to the cost and difficulty of installation (you'd need to build your own cabinet/building outside the exchange).

Hi john,
I am a current subscriber of aanet.. On broadband choice and bigpond websites, it is stated that the "Pakenhan Vic" exchange is ADSL2 Capable.. after going to the aanet members section and signing in to my acct, your website does not allow me to Upgrade to ADSL2.. After doing a phone number check on your website (aanet) , the answer was my exchange is only ADSL1 enabled... What is correct ,AAnet, or the other sites?? I'm confused... please advise...

Both. For you to get ADSL2 from aaNet, the exchange needs to have Eftel/aaNet's equipment installed in it. Just because your exchange is "compatible" on some lists doesn't mean it has aaNet equipment in it - it just means that *someone* has installed their own adsl2 equipment in there, but not necessarily aaNet

Not at this point in time. Broadband that slows to dialup is considered by many to be pretty pointless, especially when running services like VoIP. There are many DSL providers that do shape though, and aaNet may even consider it in the future if they received enough demand.

A better solution to this is on its way. Probably mid-next week.

In reply to those who are asking about why the same exchanges tend to be enabled by many ISPs, the answer is that these have competitive backhaul capacity available. Those exchanges which don't have competitive backhaul options (i.e. non-Telstra) tend to be unviable.

However, we have been investigating various options recently and we may have some solutions. More later...

John / Jason / or anyone else who can help.

I too like everyone else have been waiting patiently for aaNet to provide ADSL2+. When the initial exchange listing was released (see /forum-replies.cfm?t=968342) I was so happy to see South Oakleigh exchange listed.

Now when I go to upgrade my plan, I have no option for ADSL2+. Also, when I enter my phone number, it says only ADSL1 is available. What a tease for it to be listed but then not actually available.

Therefore could someone please answer my very simple question(s):

Is the South Oakleigh exchange enabled for ADSL2+ from aaNet?

And if so, what can I not see the option to upgrade to it..?

I'm a long time aaNet/Eftel customer. In fact my very first broadband ISP was Datafast (who was bought out by Eftel). At around the same time I churned to aaNet (who, as we all know, was also bought out by Eftel). So I guess you say I've been with aaNet/Eftel for a long long long time.

This is the second time I've posted asking this question, so surely my loyalty and patience means that someone from aaNet can answer my question about the South Oakleigh exchange... :)

Thanks.

Foxidrive said "Yep" to I'm assuming that you can also move away from aanet adsl2+ via SST to another provider which supports SST?

... my question is...

Can you move away from aanet (which support SST) ADSL1 via SST to ADSL2+ with another provider which supports SST? i.e. can you SST from ADSL1 to ADSL2+ assuming both parties support SST? or must it be from ADSL2+ to ADSL2+? Most of the info on SST don't make this 100% clear i.e.

bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc/?...ist&type=sst

and

whirlpool.net.au/news/?id=1702

...actually after some searching... my current ISP has a page which seems to indicate that it is possible to use SST to go from ADSL1 to ADSL2+

www.aanet.com.au/about_sst

(of course my current ISP doesn't support ADSL2+ on Telstra infrastructure and has discontinued 2 plans I've had while I've been with them... so it's time to put SST to the test and get while the getting is good!).

My final question I guess is, how long does a Single Service Transfer take? i.e. can I sign up with a new ISP and get going in a day? Or is their the usual week or two of waiting around until the transfer finally occurs (but without much disconnect time).

I too suffer the same problem for the Lutwyche exchange, listed as active at launch but not showing as available on the number test page. Taking a peak at the source beneath the page suggests a missing closing quote in the ADSL2+ plan link: www.aanet.com.au/adsl2_plans.html (Line 125 of the output for those that need to know to get this fixed).

I had no problems, however, once signed in, in upgrading to one of the new ADSL2+ plans.

Indeed it does. I'm tossing up between TPG and aaNet now since this plan was released today.

2 things that are making me scratch my head though. The high cost of the SST churn from aaNet [$99] and if uploads exceed downloads they are counted instead of downloads.

I do a fair bit of uploading and this is the main reason of wanting ADSL2+ :(

Is there any chance of making the SST fee competitive?

aaNet $99
iiNet $39
TPG $59 12months, $0 18months
Internode $88

Well apart TPG none of them offer anywhere near the data of aaNet for the price, and TPG has a minimum 12 month contract (aaNet is 6 months). You do the sums.

Anyway the excess charged by aaNet is one of the lowest around. Remember there are still ISPs who are charging $150 per gig.

Well my exchange doesn't get a mention but I'm still happy with my current set up thanks very much. Actually I'm rather amused with this mob hysteria that is going on at the moment. It is after all just an internet connection.

I'd love to go to ADSL2+, but 'change plans' only gives me standard ADSL options. I'm on the Oakleigh (Vic) exchange. I saw Jason M's post saying he was going to provide an updated roll-out list: Jason, where's the list?! :) I feel the need; the need for speed!

The original aaNet was based in QLD and had mainly east coast customers. Between that, and since they're also wholesaling (apparently) I guess that's where the majority of the potential customers are

Yeah, they make good money off wholesale so as usual, who can work them out. They have been like kids with toys. "You can't play with my toys because, because, they’re mine!" Never any logic with them.

Hopefully the prices are competitive with the real world. (Unlike their own ADSL2 pricing)

The articles I’ve read suggested that Telstra never said it wouldn’t wholesale ADSL2+ they just weren’t prepared to do it until they wouldn’t be forced to sell at regulated prices. I would be happy to get ADSL2+ as no one is going to build in my exchange so many choices is better than just Bigpond.

I have a similar problem to others. My exchange 'Canterbury' is listed as active, it is also listed as available on the aaNet check page;

" Next Generation ADSL2+ services are available in your area – Click to view plans."

So I click plans and the option to change is simply not there, I only see a list of ADSL1 plans.

What is going on here? I want to upgrade wile its available and I simply cannot!!!

I really don't see the point of the 'Check Your Number' facility on the aaNet web site for current aaNet users.

When I use this facility it tells me:
• Next Generation ADSL2+ services are available in your area – Click to view plans.
• Standard ADSL1 services are available in your area – Click to view plans.
When I go into the members area and try to change my adsl1 plan to adsl2 I cannot – only adsl1 plans are shown.

It is my understanding that the only way for me to change to adsl2 is to try to change my plan in the members section every few days or so until at last the adsl2 plans appear as one of my choices.

Success using the aaNet 'Check Your Number' facility is a *necessary* but not *sufficent* condition for changing to adsl2.

Or you could just look at the change plans plans where it tells you whether you are on Telstra or aaNet/EFTel hardware. You can't select an ADSL2+ plan until your exchange has been migrated across from Telstra.

That is correct.

I really don't see the point of the 'Check Your Number' facility on the aaNet web site for current aaNet users.

There is no point beyond showing them whether their exchange has been enabled. Ideally the member's area should show when your particular exchange is due to be migrated, though I can't see that happening for a number of reasons.

Andy, I am currently on Telstra Wholesale.
As I said, I need to just keep on trying to change to adsl2 every few days or so, because this is only way I can see if I am able to change – well you know what I mean :)

There is a competitor in Sandgate, QLD exchange now http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au hopefully aaNet can wholesale through them cheaper than Telstra Wholesale. At last a choice!!!

Jason's last answer on this was that they did not yet have a plan to migrate us over to the new equipment. I'm guessing this will change as it must be more cost effective for aaNet in the longer term to have us on their MSAN.
The new plans are better value, plus you don't have to bundle.

Hmmm ... Did not yet have a plan to migrate us.? – Does he wanna keep us, or not.?

I'm seriously on the verge of changing Isp's for the lack of support of EXISTING customers, & the confirmation of some schedule or timeframe we can expect for this " Merge " to be done.? – For eg; "Everyone will be migrated by Dec-08" ... Then I know what to expect, & can allow for this.!

Hi Jason and John,
I was just after an update with regards to exchange rollouts and migrations.
The original build plan target was 15 exchanges a month, could you post if this target is being achieved as I've seen little in the way of updates after following the posted lists for some time now.
Many here are showing a little frustration and I'm sure if more information was forthcoming most would patiently await exchanges to be enabled or customers to be migrated.
Even IF aanet and eftel were having problems with the rollout the customers would understand better if they were being kept informed. Personally I don't have a problem waiting and the request for more info is more curiosity than anything else
Cheers gnome

The problem is that you are currently on Optus ULL – your telephone line is physically on the Optus Network.

There is no simple way to change someone from another carrier's ULL network to our own ADSL2+ network – using LSS.

The only real way I know of would be to transfer your home telephone to Telstra, have your ADSL2 service disconnected, and then order an aaNet ADSL2+ service.

I suspect that if we do our own ULL based service that the transfer process should be a lot easier, and with much less downtime, but at this stage there is no effective transfer process.

If you are on Optus hardware the only ADSL2+ plans available to you are the ones in your members area. The wholesale cost for Optus based services is more than using our own network, as well as the fact we have to pay per mbit for backhaul on the Optus network.

Hi Jason,

The list of exchanges identifies "current active", "under-construction" exchanges and the like. When it say's under-constuction, usually what period of time would that mean? weeks/months?

Because I'm on the CPHL (Camp Hill) exchange in Bris, and it say's "under constuction". Do they provide you with ETA's on the completion dates?

Thanks.

OK, read through the posts and I now understand that the aaNet web site will indicate that the exchange is available even know it is only planned. I agree with the people in those posts that aaNet should only show the exchanges as available when you can ACTUALLY purchase them. It is rather misleading. So which site can we use to check if an exchange is active:

http://www.aanet.com.au/bbnext_alpha.html

That one lists exchanges that are active and taking orders for new customers.

For existing customers the only way to check is via the plan change section of your members area.

BTW Jason after talking a couple of months ago about Ballarat exchange and possible backhaul problems, you should maybe consider the Vic governments own backhaul fibre that is apparently not being used much (article last week in the Ballarat newspaper). Which goes to Ballarat.

It's called VERN (Victorian Education Research Network) and is mainly for researches and scientists ect but with the dramtic under use reported in the paper theres maybe a opportunity for the commercial ventures to use the fibre? Unlikely but.....

Here's there website http://www.vernet.net.au/public/
