firstly I apologise for yet another speed question, but its really bugging me.
Im connected to iinet adsl2+ on the deepdene exchange in VIC. Im about 1.8km from my exchange (I know cable length plays an important role). I've got the standard iinet issue belkin 4-port wired modem and i use voip. My question is should I be getting better sync speeds or is this the best i can do.
stats from my modem:
Data Rate Up Stream 640 (Kbps.) Down Stream 6816 (Kbps.)
op data Noise Margin: upstream 10 dB downstream 8 dB Attenuation: upstream 44 dB downstream 40 dB
I know web calculators are never 100% but upon using the one from fremnet.net i got these results:
Enter your Downstream attenuation (dB) 40 Cable Loss (dB/km) – Default 13.81 Attainable Rate (ADSL1) – kbit/s 7602 Attainable Rate (ADSL2) – kbit/s 12018 Distance to exchange (Meters) 2896
any info you guys could give would be helpful. thanks

From cable records, I am 2838 metres from my exchange, have a 37dB attenuation, have rewired my whole house, installed central filter and the best I achieve is 6300/1021.
Noise Margin: upstream 10 dB downstream 8 dB
It appears you aren't on Thrillseeker profile - this may increase you downstream rate albeit with potential stability issues.

FYI, i'm on a similar distance from my exchange (1841 metres cable distance - i know from a telstra fault about a year ago when renovations dug up our phone line..).
also on iinet, different exchange to you, but same distance & modem.
i am on the one-from-the-right speed profile on toolbox.
i get:
Stream Type Actual Data Rate Up Stream 1023 (Kbps.) Down Stream 7702 (Kbps.)
Operation Data Upstream Downstream Noise Margin 9 dB 6 dB Attenuation 43 dB 37 dB
(with downstream varying from 9Mbps to 7.7Mbps - the pit in the street full of water, its a little less at present).
It is certainly in the ballpark of what you can expect - a lot of it depends on the quality of the copper & number-of-joins, I know I have about 5 "joins" between me & exchange, that is really the killer.
still - these rates are perfectly fine, I have no issue with them.
cheers.

Basically if you're expecting anything above 1.5mbit you are expecting too much, all you can do is hope for speeds abovce that.
There are so many factors involved you neghbour could have double your sync speed.
Prolly a silly question, but have you tried isolation testing?

This is unusual, something's funny (or your line is, well, unusual). Is that under isolation? If no, do the isolation test.
(off topic: can someone list how many things are wrong in "Kbps." heh. Why modems can't do things right)

Bridge taps can really mess with DSL signals too. The OP's line stats may be down a tad compared to what might be expected, and this can be due to all kinds of line conditions. The reduced upstream speed is certainly telling though...

I am so tired of that line. Experience has shown us that if you are reasonably close to your exchange then you are indeed going to get higher speeds than that. The exceptions are few and far between and usually involve special circumstances. Therefore the expectation is in line with reality.
Furthermore, if you don't expect higher speeds then you are quite possibly denying yourself a better service by not bothering to engage in any troubleshooting that may identify fixable issues.
I don't mean you any offense EwarWoo as I know you are simply stating an official position, but the official position is just useless.

Yes, you absolutely can. Anytime that something is likely to occur, you can feel free to expect it, since that is the very definition of the word. Expectation is not synonymous with certainty and by pointing out that there are indeed exceptions I avoided implying that it was.
you can know you're in with a fantastic chance
As you can see, we don't really have a disgreement here. It's all just a matter of semantics.

cheers to everyone for your help. Just to be clear, im not unhappy, just curious if there was anything i could do to squeeze a little more speed outta my connection. May try pushing to thrillseeker, but i have a feeling it won't be stable at all. thanks :)
