Hello,
I was downloading 4 files at the same time with a download manager that totalled around 1gb in size.
I downloaded most of it and they had around 3 minutes left to completetion when my exetel connection just stopped working. I couldnt surf, check email and the downloads stopped. I waited around half an hour hoping it would kick in again but it didnt so i restarted my router and my connection works fine.
However, the site i was downloading from didnt accept resuming paused downloads through my download manager so i have to download it all over again and waste another gig of quota.
THis never happened to me once on my 4 years of iinet. Yet it has happened in my first week of exetel.
Is this a common thing?
It lloked really crap when it said it had 3 minutes left then froze and burned all that quota on nothing.

Is what a common thing? It's quite possible that your modem locked up or the server had issues.

Haven't you heard? Exetel suck.

If the downloads are really important try to get them during peak hours.

I don't think Exetel deliberately dropped your connection because you only had 3 minutes to go.

lol
I had the same problem as onemind once, but the download manager quit at 97% and told me to restart my computer. Don't know what happened, but my download did support pausing though.

Aw c'mon, surely John Linton looks in now and again on his network and thinks "hehe, let's mess this guy up a little" :-)
1 gig, big deal; quota's big enough to swallow that up. Move on.

i think the point here we're trying to raise is the crappy connection and service quality that exetel provides. inconsistent speeds, crappy support, etc etc etc...i hate to say it but i regret transferring to adsl1 8mbit to adsl2+ extel...biggest piece of crap i've ever used...
to the op, this is not uncommon, better get used to all these bs connection issues and oh bad luck about the 1gb lost quota...

Pretty common for me. Usually I just restart the modem straight away.
1Gb is nothing. Once it happened to a 4Gb file that I had been downloading overnight...no resume either.

Reminds of why some large files come in 50 RAR files. What a strange world... Just wondering why your using a download manager for a 1GB file on ADSL2? Wouldn't this take a few minutes to download? maybe your use of a download manager got u booted?
JOHN L PWNS UR EXENETS!!! IS AM CORRUPTING YOUR DOWNLOADS!!!

It seems to me the problem was your router freezing up. How is this Exetel's fault? Perhaps a power surge or an EM pulse from a neighbour was the cause. I used to get that at a former residence where a neighbour operated a workshop - stuffed up my television at times too.
Routers do freeze up at some point anyway. Perhaps reboot your router and pc before an important download.
The other issue is: Could you have restarted the downloads from another website that does support resume?

That hasn't been my experience, but fair call if that's yours. Beacuse I've haven't had problems, I've yet to depend on support etc.
You could always go back to 8Mb, or churn?

They were discrete mathematics lectures from my university if you must know.

I dont have adsl2. I am using adsl1.
Wouldn't this take a few minutes to download?
Around 2 hours.
maybe your use of a download manager got u booted?
I dont see why.

I suggest using your uni's network for this stuff. Especially since thats what our HECS are for.
I'm voting check your modem etc. I have a computer at home that randomly loses complete connection to the internets when i have heaps of connection on bittorrent.

i have the choice of going back to old adsl1 8mbit TELSTRA LINE with exetel which is far better and at least consistent with speeds 'most' of the time. But its working out to be cheaper bundling with phone and internet with OPTUS line, hence why i decided to join exetel adsl2. i learn now that going for cheap isp plans doesn't always pay off itself as now i have to pay $100 to get out of this contract.
FYI i wish i could join other isp's of different dslams but many dslam providers are not activated in my area yet.

This thread has nothing to do with adsl2+ and your issues with it.

onemind - this is a common occurance on exetel. their networking eqiupment is unstable and the services they offer is barely usable at times. of course if you ask them its either YOUR fault as a customer, or the reseller services of telstra of optus that is the problem. oh no, its never their fault....

mypen moans... this is a common occurance on exetel.
I'm pretty sure failed downloads are a common problem on any network. In fact in my house its wireless network issues that cause the most download fails. Luckily I get the fast broadband service I paid for and can redownload the file again without blaming someone else.

MyPen, You seem to hold an opinion about Exetel’s service that is simply not true. I notice you do not state your ISP in your Profile. Why is that? So unless you have personally contacted Exetel about service issues please reframe from comment. Or provide cases where you feel you must comment on their service that will help the OP. The OP came here for feedback about an issue they have, not to have ppl tell them what a mistake it was for them to join Exetel. I’ve been with Exetel for nearly three years now and have had only a couple of service problems that have been sorted out quickly and professionally.

Realistically a drop in your connection could happen at any point between 0 and 100%, with an equal chance (think Murphy's Law).
To answer your question, "is it a common thing?" - no, I don't believe it is.
I have been with Exetel for about 15 months now and the one thing I can say about them is that they are stable. Slow (very slow) at times, but always stable. If I have had any issues in the time I have been with them it was due to user error and not their fault.
HTTP transfers are not always reliable. As others have mentioned, BitTorrent or FTP would be better protocols for data transfer. Download managers can sometimes screw you over as they split the file into multiple parts and try and resume it. Other applications may not recognise the split parts and will try and resume from the last bit downloaded causing a corrupt file.
A tip I can offer is next time you have downloaded 97% of a file from a HTTP xfer and it dies in the ass, if the file is also available on a torrent tracker try and resume it there. BT will recognise that you only need ~3% to complete the file and will save you. It has helped me numerous times in the past when I have had incomplete HTTP transfers.

For the record, I've never had any problems with FTP or HTTP(which I use extensively, as recently as today), and I suspect that the OP's problem is unrelated to his Exetel connection.
