They're supposed to come with a copy.

Where did you buy it?

Go back and RMA it

It's common practice now that they have software on the laptop to create "recovery disks".

Have a look and see if there is a function key and a lcd key. If so, hold down function while pressing the lcd (or screen) key.

It's pretty common for notebooks to not come with any support on CDs these days, it's built into a 'rescue partition' on your hard drive that's not visible unless you drill down in computer administrator. The intention is, that you make a rescue set of CDs as soon as you take it out of the box.

As far as no display goes, can you see POST or you get absolutely nothing on the screen?

If you bought it within a week just return it back to the shop they will have no problems and no questions ask and get a new one.

Yep. Sounds like its in need of an RMA. Is it possible for you to try connect it to an external display like a monitor to see if it outputs there?

No, Thats what "Recovery Partition's" are for, they allow you to create 1 (one) copy of the Operating system Recovery disks.

you do not get a copy of windows with it, its part of the OEM licensing for Laptops.

As for the Laptop screen not working, take it back to place of purchase.

The recovery software, will have a copy of Windows, Embedded into it, specifically locked to that single Laptop (or Specific model series).

Depends on wether or not the place has more stock of the specific make/model of notebook.
The first Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-A64 I bought from BigW was killed by the Vista sleep-mode bug. No more in stock when I went to return it for a replacement the next day. Had to accept a refund in full.

My Laptop (HP/Compaq) had the default setup of Vista, on the Recovery partition.

I first made a copy of the recovery Partition using the wizard in Windows itself, which took 2 DVD's, then recovered the HDD space it was using.

When recovering the Operating system from the DVD's, it will partition out the HDD back to its Factory setup, which includes the Recovery partition. The 2 DVD's will recover the full OEM version of Vista, back to Factory default.

Mind you, I run XP on it now :)

Sleep mode is a bug i dont even use it on XP it makes windows go nuts when you wake it up and 80% of the time you have to reboot the system

Sleep mode is save system state to RAM.
Hibernation mode is save system state to HDD.

On my Lenovo, the notebook went BSoD when I tried to exit from Sleep mode.

The problems Vista has with properly carrying out Sleep mode is well known. Vista has been recorded crashing going into Sleep mode as well as exiting from it.
Vista SP1 is supposed to alleviate these problems, but as I never got to install it, I don't know for certain. Can someone else confirm?

For a brand-new system, I'd recommend that you create 2 new power profiles.
One for when the notebook is using its power brick, and the other for battery. Within each profile; make sure that both the 'Mains' and 'Battery' columns are identical, and that in both the new profiles; Sleep mode is set to 'Never'.

On my Lenovo notebook, after the BSoD due to the Sleep mode bug, the desktop would start, then the pre-installed apps would begin to load into the taskbar.
The display would black out twice during this app loading, and each time Vista would report that it had recovered from an error.
Then, before the second balloon tip could be closed, and before all apps had finished loading, the system would lock up, totally and utterly. No keyboard response. No touchpad response. Only thing the system would respond to was press and hold the power button.
Vista reinstall from rescue partition failed to complete, and that is supposed to nuke the pre-existing OS partition on the system.
The system lockups persisted despite OS reinstall.

So yes, from hard learned evidence, I can say that bug can render a laptop running Vista utterly unusable.

Sorry about giving grounds for such a misinterpretation.

Thing is with that Lenovo, to make the set of restore discs of Vista, you have to create the discs *IN* Vista. So with Vista utterly unable to actually start, there was no way to make the restore discs.
The Lenovo ships with XP restore discs, but since the Vista restore partition had failed to reinstall Vista, there was no way to be in any way sure that the fault wouldn't also carry over to XP.
