Why am I getting slow speeds like this?
I'm using wireless internet at home, and I only using a 802.11b wireless card. Would that affect my download speed that much?

Thanks all,
Pretz

Try connecting via ethernet. It should improve the download speed. See what you will get when you run this download speed test : www.tpg.com.au/test3.iso . You need not finish the download, just get the stable transfer rate and cancel it right away.

I'm also having a lot of trouble, connected to thescullin exchange in canberra. Tried downloading that test .iso file and only got 14kb/s...when I usually get anywhere from 200 up to 7/800 depending on the dl source.

It definitely would, and if that came with your computer, chances are that's also a bit long in the tooth. Try ethernet first if possible.

Funniest thing I heard however was this person complaining about slow wireless connection was in fact connected to a neighbour's wireless network!

Our wireless laptops download at 1MB. With a sync speed of 16,000. Something is wrong there. So you should try ethernet first, if thats fast, then get a new wireless card.

Edit: Also make sure your Antenna transmit power is set to full in your router. Look for something regarding Wireless Performance in advanced settings of your router.

For some reason today, my download speed is faster. I haven't tried connecting eternet, or not even reset my router.

Your line speed is 2.15 Mbps (2147 kbps).
Your download speed is 268 KB/s (0.26 MB/s).

And for the www.tpg.com.au/test3.iso, I'm getting around 400KB/s now. But I was only getting around 150kb/s last night I tried.
Is this speed normal for me? Or is there other ways to improve it?

I'm VERY sure I'm using my own wireless connection ;)

Well you should try connecting to ethernet. That way the problem can isolated.

802.11b is an old wireless protocol. If possible, pick up a 802.11g wifi card and try that. I don't recommend going for the "N" series protocol yet because it's still in draft and there's a good chance you could be stuck with redundant and outdated hardware in 6 months.

Chances are his router doesn't support it, but the card might be firmware upgraded when the final standard is ratified.

802.11b can only run at 11mbps max. Your ADSL2+ connection is running close to 20. Even though 11mbps is more than what you are getting, the actual throughput on the wireless card would be less than that.

Try a direct ethernet connection to eliminate the wireless factor.
