Hi all,

I have a Siemens Speadstream 4200 provided by Optus. I want to give it to my sister who is in a different city and has her internet with dodo.

1. Can she use it at her place??
2. Can the firmware be changed if it cannot be used with dodo??

Thanks,
crispies

It should work by simply changing the login details.

On monday i can get back to you if it does work. However i notice even when i dont have optus codes on my line anymore it's constantly attempting to reach "acs.optusnet.net.au" so it might be locked to optus.

If i was you i would just foot the cost for a new modem. These are horrible things to work with :p

Hi Crispies,

Connect the PC to the modem via ethernet, power up the modem, factory reset the modem by pressing the reset switch at the back until the POWER light flashes RED a couple of times.

Log into the firmware via 10.1.1.1.

Press SETUP and then PPP, change the default username from johncitizen@optusnet.com.au to (for example) yourname@dodo.net.au.

Update the password, press SAVE SETTINGS, press DISCONNECT/RECONNECT, then follow suit.

Once there's a stable DSL and ACTIVITY light, it means that your sister should online with Dodo.

Cheers,

Luau
P.S. It's not locked to Optus.

Just some more information...

She will have a wireless router behind her Optus Speedstream 4200. This means that I will probably put it into full bridged mode and configure her router to handle everything on the internet.

I hope it works, because her current modem is a pile of junk (it only has USB modem functions).

You'll need to elaborate on your comments before they'd be taken seriously..

The only 'change' from a stock standard Speedstream 4200 modem is that the firmware displays an Optus logo, and some of the more confusing options aren't where you can easily find them. All done to make them simpler to support.

The modem will work on another DSL service by simply changing the login details.

Even easier then. All you need to do once the modem is in Bridged Mode is to enter the login details into the form in the firmware of the router.

I have one, and im using it happily with Adam, have been for the last 6 months since i left optus

Im about to move over to Internode next week, and ill be using it then too.

Its not locked to Optus, and it works perfectly with other ISP's

I have used it in Optus bridge and Full Bridge with no issues.

They aren't Optus resellers are they??

Great! I have logged on to the speedstream and changed it to full bridged mode. Then I logged on to the router and changed the settings to the ones my sister will need. I have drawn her a nice diagram to help set it all up too!

The reason im not ablt to tell you until monday. Is because i was with optus but im leaving to iinet. I am currently on backup dialup and my iinet codes will not be on until monday evening

So cant really do much to speed it up ;-)

/me takes his bat and ball and goes home :P.

Seriously though. My old Optus 4200 works fine on other providers networks, including my own AdamDirect account.

It's not relevant. An OptusNet Speedstream 4200 will work with any ISP as is - for normal uses all that has to be done is changing the username and password - end of story. There are no blocks of any kind in the firmware and if you were really desperate for an answer just use Google to search through Whirlpool and you'll find plenty of examples of people who have been given this same advice and used it successfully.

In your case as you've put the modem into full bridge mode, this entire discussion is completely irrelevant as you've handed over the PPPoE login role to the router.

This is a feature Siemens put in the modem, but few ISPs have actually made any use of - OptusNet certainly doesn't and even when used on an OptusNet service you should see error messages regarding this in the log when the modem first connects up, because Optus hasn't bothered to set up acs.optusnet.com.au, so the modem doesn't get anywhere... right from the start, the DNS lookup on that address will fail.

If you change ISPs, all that will happen is that the same error messages will appear in the log.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TR-069 has some background on this unused feature.

Well on pure numbers it's currently 5 saying it'll work fine and explaining what needs to be done vs 1 claiming it won't and not giving any further information.

That and like I say, Google will concur. There just isn't an issue, as the OP will discover for themselves in due course.
