Howdy,
I just moved into a new rental place, and the previous tenant had the land line with Optus.

Currently its disconnected, obviously because the previous tenant disconnected it, and i havent reconnected it yet.

Is it possible to get Exetel's Naked DSL with a previously Optus line?
Has anyone done this recently?

Ive been told that I must call up Telstra and they must switch the line over to them before I can use Exetels Naked DSL. (Costing me $299 which I'd rather have in my pocket)

Anybody heard of anything like this before?

(I've checked that my exchange does have access to the Naked DSL)

Cheers!

yep, it is a condition of optus wholesale. to use their ports you need to come across from a telstra* line. if you already have a optus line, you are stuffed.

not to mention, if you are in a optus cabled area, the line will not go to the exchange and so can not carry adsl from anyone, even optus.

This situation is the same for all optus wholesaled products including bundled adsl2

edit: found is error - * was optus, but correct now

I would check to see if you have a telstra line to the house as well. The last place I rented had 2 lines coming into the house but only the optus line was connected to the internal phone outlets. The Telstra line had been left unconnected under the house so it wasn't too hard to switch back.

i am curious about this.
i know nothing about exchanges etc etc so maybe u can make my mind clearer

i live in a optus cabled street.
they would not connect me when i moved here because i am part of a subdivided block and optus only goes to the first house (which i am not)
same as they dont go into apt buildings unless it was part of the build (so they told me)

so i had to go back to telstra after some years of being happy with brand new optus line in the street of my previous home

when i switeched to the bundled adsl with exetel/optus my line went to optus and i kept the same phone number.
i lost that in my recent move to naked adsl.
but i am on a telstra line and not the cable in the street.
even thro i may well be switched ...or whatever ....at the exhange i do know that i have a telstra line.

i have had endless discussions with telstra about this with some call centre people informing me i have optus physical line.
the technician informed me otherwise.

what am i not understaning please?

basically - the actual physical copper wire to your house is owned by Optus. However you can still sign up to other providers such as Telstra previously because Telstra rents the line to your house from Optus.

I think it's quite costly to have Telstra install a physical line to your house especially if you're living in an apartment block (though usually old apartment blocks already have Telstra line in place)

i am still missing something sorry trolling troll.
what i understood was........the line to this property... and another at the back of me... was put in as a telstra physical line at the time of the build.
i actually had another line added in when i moved in ...and it was a telstra connection also and has remained that way.

when i went to adsl2 bundled i believed my line was taken over by optus from telstra.
ie i believed that optus was renting from telstra.

you are saying the opposite.....that telstra rents from optus

confused !!!

all i know is that if i want to take the line to anyone not using optus .....then i have a problem of some weeks down time while stuff is done to whatever... wherever

I went with what the guy from Telstra call centre told you :)

I mean, if you're sure your apartment has a physical telstra line in place, there should be another phoneline outlet in your house apart from the one you added from when you moved in.

all i know is that if i want to take the line to anyone not using optus .....then i have a problem of some weeks down time while stuff is done to whatever... wherever

It took me around 2-3 weeks before my line is actived with exetel naked adsl2+ - my understanding is, while the process isn't that time consuming, they need to schedule with their onsite technician/contractor.

If it doesn't cost you a lot of money, then 2-3 weeks of downtime sounds reasonable from the norm. Anything more, it's probably better to insists with Telstra call centre that you do have a Telstra line :) Goodluck!

If you absolutely can't live without internet like me and you have a Three phone, you can sign up to their 100mb internet package straight from your phone - connect that to your PC and have some access to the internet during the downtime. It costs only $12.

trolling troll
thanks

i am already with exetel
have been for 4 years with assorted plans.
and lately bundled and then naked adsl.
with optus

i checked with telstra about my options before going from a bundled plan to naked.
i like to see my options elsewhere before recommitting to anothers year of contract.
and loosing a long held and known phone number was an issue

i am not in an apartment
i am on a subdivided block, in one of two newer houses which had telstra lines run in.
optus were very very very clear i wasnt with them and couldnt ever be, when i moved in here.
i could switch my billing to them but i would never have an optus line

i know that my line is a telstra line.
they gave me enough grief about it when i discussed moving to exetel/optus.
and they gave me a lot more when i looked at my options more recently.
they made a big deal about how i had been one of the mob but was now outside the fence.
to get back inside the fence i had to do all sorts of contortions.......like spend forever with no internet

my second line, which i am never attaching any internet service to, ever if i can avoid it...was put in very rapidly by contractors 7 years ago and it was somehow connected to the original line.

I don't quite get what you are saying here, I'm in an Optus cables street, and I'm ADSL'd up with Exetel via Optus.

I just moved here, and got the phone connected with Telstra, then Optus took over the line and here I am.

(I took great pleasure in telling the Telstra staff that I'm really not interested in any of their deals as it's a temporary arrangement only :D)
