Can some tell me about a voip provider who offers cheap but untimed local call rates and no contract and no monthly plan. I just want to pay for what I use. Thanks

Have you tried typing 'cheap calls' into the search function?

I was checking Sipme's website. They have 10c untimed local calls for $10 prepaid. But its not said that when does that $10 expires if not used.

Sipme credit, as far as I know, does not expire as long as you have used it in the previous 365 days.

Pennytel have probably the cheapest rates - 8c aussie landline, 10.5c/min mobiles and a few countries at 8c untimed as well. Their timed overseas rates are the cheapest that i've seen.
That said, they have their bad quality hits.
Other companies providing good cheap rates are World Dial Point, ClincknCallnow, MNF - check out their whirlpool user plans.
Depending on what VOIP device you have, if it can support more than 1 VSP then it's always good to have a backup.

I dont have any device. I searched for the devices and found them expensive. So, I will use the software to make calls from my computer and receive calls to my telstra landphone number through my normal handset.

How is the quality? Most ppl will say very good including me :)
Best to get an ATA Box instead of using a softphone IMO.

Mynetfone has two modems - "Netgear WGR613V" and "Netgear TA612V". Both are priced $20. which one should I get? I use a belkin wireless modem/router with 4-port ethernet at the moment. Two computers are connected to that router/modem at my home and I am planning to get a fax machine(dont know whether its a relevant information). I am using a two port filter to split the main telephone from the wall socket. Please advice me on the modems considering my usage. Thanks

Then i'd go with the Netgear TA612V as it has two lines setup, so one for your fax and the other for a phone.

Is there a voip enabled modem or adapter which will enable my handset to receive direct incoming calls on my existing landphone number(telstra) while connected to that voip enabled modem or adapter? And if so how much would that cost? Thanks.

You can get a Billion 7404 VPGM (2 line) or a 7401 VPGM (1 line). The 7401 about $150 and the 7404 about $200 (round about don't quote me on prices). These are all in one ADSL modem, 4 port router, wireless and VOIP ATA in one unit. You just plug a two port splitter/ filter into the wall and plug one marked "adsl" to the ADSL port an the one marked phone to "line". You normal landline rings as normal and when all set up correctly you dial out through voip with your provider of choice or choices (depending on device picked) These devices has a PSTN fallback feature so if the internet or voip is out your adaptor automatically routes the calls via the normal PSTN system. When set up correctly your phone behaves as it always did with the advantage of cheap VOIP calls. Your $200 odd device is quickly paid off in call cost savings over the PSTN system.

Hi mkibria I would probably suggest the NETGEAR DG834GV VoIP Phone Adaptor/ADSL2+ Modem. See the followiong link; https://www.mynetfone.co.../netgear-dg834gv I personally never used this device, maybe other people in this forum can shed some light if there are any issues with this adapter/modem. This device is the only one that supports broadband fax/ADSL2+/VOIP all in one. Although this might be expensive it saves you from buying any additional hardware. You might find it cheaper elsewhere, then sign up the with one of the mynetfone whirpool special deals for voip. If you do decide to by it from mynetfone remember that the device is already configured for you but IS NOT LOCKED to them so if you are unhappy you could change VSP. It seems to be a reasonable price + you get free call credits. Unfortunaly you cant get this modem through mynetfone with any whirlpool specials. Hope this hasn't confused you that much. I currently using mynetfone and find the call quality great, have tried other VSP'S like engin, gotalk but i would have to say Mynetfone better value & quality.
Regards

It's not that good IMO, do a search to see it's issues.
I'd go with the popular Billion all in ones mentioned above www.staticice.com.au/cgi...Billion+7404VGPM

Didnt know the netgear had issues just thought i would recommend it because it had broadband fax, so as Pieter said DONT get a netgear modem. I use a Billion 7401VGP, had issues with garbled voip calls using the G29 codec, but i seem to have solved that by switching to G11a. Fingers crossed. I Would highly recommend billion modems as that it the only issue i have had. Very reliable modem, been using it for 2 years now. Thats why these forums are so good, you get instant feedback....great stuff.
