Hi WP,

In the first of many collaborative efforts with our friends at Westnet, we're happy to announce that we have added their gaming site and all its related content to the iiNet Freezone. 3FL Games have servers all over Australia for popular games, offer radio streams and file download mirrors. iiNet customers can now access all of this content without affecting their normal download quotas.

3FL Games Website
www.3fl.net

3FL Game Servers
www.3fl.net.au/serverspy

3FL Radio Streams
www.3fl.net.au/radio

3FL Download Mirror
www.3fl.net.au/mirror

This will be announced officially in the near future and the iiNet Freezone list on our website will be updated to include this new content, but seeing as the technical side is already sorted we're letting the Whirlpoolers know early :)

Enjoy!
-wob

edit: yes this includes their Steam content mirrors

Will it work in reverse as well, so WestNet customers can access iiNet freezone content without it counting towards their quotas?

Unfortunately the SteamWatch method is not the most effective at restricting your downloads to specific Steam servers. For more information on why this is the case please see this thread:

/forum-replies.cfm?t=844673&p=2#r36

Using a firewall or the IPSec restriction method are the only effective methods of restricting your Steam client to certain servers.

Poo, I downloaded some stuff and it seems to have been added to my peak downloads. There is some sizeable Freezone usage too though - almost as if it's adding the downloads to both.

Just to clarify, I downloaded the first four episodes of Pure Pwnage from here: mirror.3fl.net.au/pub/movies/purepwnage and also restricted Steam to the 3FL servers and updated a few of my games.

The Steam mirror seemed to be set up correctly since there were only these two connections on port 27030:

TCP andrewdesktop:1957 steam-nsw.3fl.net.au:27030 ESTABLISHED
TCP andrewdesktop:1959 steam-wa.3fl.net.au:27030 ESTABLISHED

I'm on the old Home something plan with iiNet by the way (ADSL2+, 10gb peak 10gb offpeak).

While they are playing without too much skipping, Winamp is showing them almost continuously buffering.

Not really because you don't know every single steam content servers IP. You also only want to block the one port.

It will be alot easier and quicker to setup the IPSEC policys.

One problem I found with the IPSEC filtering is that you can't easily add new games. You need to disable the rule to have the basic files added. Then re-enable to get the games downloaded from the 3fl mirror.

Hey Nick - since we're putting new stuff on *free* content - what about the mail server?

Is that possible?

When I'm shaped, retrieving mail is a painful exercise in frustration.

And if you're feeling really charitable - maybe you could look at not counting downloads from the personal web space server?

Both the above have and do impact on me - and as I'm on the absolute highest iiPlan available to me (this to stop the 'get a higher plan' comments) these measures would make it somewhat easier to use my connection if I so happen to be shaped in the last day or two until my reset date.

So - whataya reckon?

Cheers,
Rick

Definitely not.

I'd give it 10 minutes before someone setup a 'warez2email' gateway on a colo somewhere :) Way too much potential for abuse (just like members web hosting).

I'm going to pretend that I have ANY idea on which you refer - and ask whether it'd be possible to have free mail content for say 50MB a month?

That should avoid abuse to a certain extent.

I wouldn't even think mine would be any where NEAR 50MB - but it was just a figure.

Assuming you didn't use the 20MB before you got shaped or the number of other scenarios this function would require to actually work and test that the quota has been allocated after your shaping period.

Don't get shaped seems to be the best solution or upgrade if it is THAT tedious.

Hi,

Thanks for this my question is why do the IInet radio streams keep disconnecting after ~ 30-60 seconds yet the westnet ones seem to stream and continue to stream with no problem. Virgin radio is a good example of this.

No probs here on iinet or 3FL radio streams, just tried the virgin radio stream.

I'd say something wrong with your firewall connections, etc.

Best of Luck finding the problem.

Not much point in black holing those IPs, IMHO :-)

I'm assuming that 3FL does hold all the STEAM Content (which is should iirc)

If it doesn't, well we are going to get charged anyway on our quota, so it doesn't matter where you get it from. Moreover, I don't think any of us can use Telstra's/GameArena's STEAM Content Servers anyway, as they are limited to Telstra Bigpond customers only.

If you look at all the hoops a person has to jump through to ensure they only get the STEAM Content Server that doesn't count to their quota, all I have to say is, people shouldn't need a CCNA's just to select the STEAM Content Server of their choice. /Shakes fist at Valve

After reading some of the e-mail, I am a bit confused. Could you or anyone confirm that:

1. Watching Macquarie TV news is free (because it seems it jumps to the different url address?

2. Download the all.pls from freezone and then sent to winamp, and then choose the radio, and the radio in that list will be free?

3. 3fl include ABC classic FM, is it also free to iinet user?

4. What is the best way to tell whether any download from Tucow mirror is included in freezone?

Thanks a lot

No you can't have a STEAM content server unless you open it up to everyone in your country.

I think that there's no way to tell, the people who own the steam content servers have no way of knowing/controlling what is stored on them.

they are limited to Telstra Bigpond customers only.

And as mentioned, that's not the case, they're open to everyone - probably those in different countries too - I used to always seem to connect to them before this.

I am downloading TF2 from steam now, I am using IPSEC to block all aussie steam servers except 3FL. I used the setup guide URL provided on page 1.

It tries to use gamearena and internode to start with, when they time out it settles with these 2 3FL servers:
steam-nsw.3fl.net.au
steam-wa.3fl.net.au

toolbox is reflecting a growing green bar

1. Yes there is. If setup correctly, you will mirror everything.

2. The content servers do have a choice of who they service. (may not relate to your question, by WP doesnt do multiple quote easily!)

That statement is not correct. The Steam Content Server has no configuration on what to pull from Valve's masters. Valve configure this on their end without regard to what the owners of the content server request.

One example that comes to mind - I restricted my Steam connections to the 3FL WA content server and my client couldn't update.

Yeah, I noticed that too, when you delete the clientregistry.blob (and forcing steam to update) Steam's unable to update from 3fl; I kept downloading from Internode when I was playing with the .blob file because of this. Not complaining though, mostly freezone steam content is infinatley better than no free steam whatsoever.

I find that it still manages to connect to IP's outside of Australia even with SteamWatch installed, more specifically (69.28.128.0-69.28.191.255) / (72.165.61.150 - for example).

As far as I can tell, 69.28.128.0- is needed in order to authenticate with steam (chances are that if you block this you wont be able to login), but some IP's within that range are also used for updating content.

There is also this thread which gives you step-by step instructions on how to do it using a firewall (which im sure works perfectly), but so far the easiest method I have found is to use Netlimiter. Simply cap the IP's that you dont want (thats attempting to update content) to 1Kb/s, thats all there is to it.

Works a treat for me :)

If you run a 32bit OS, you only get the content Valve decides to give you.

If you run a 64bit OS with enough RAM, you are supposed to get everything, or at least is what it was like that the last time Alfred Reynolds explained it to me, and how GameArena does it.

www.steampowered.com/v/i...ea=content_stats

Click the View individual server statistics

You will see:
EGN Australia [filtered]
GameArena #1 [filtered]
GamingSA [filtered]

Those restrict who has access to their STEAM Content Servers. It's not a STEAM Content Server setting, its an IP Filter by the service provider, but they have to tell Valve they are filtering, hence their filtered status.

The best way to do it is with the IPSEC filters. That way you know you are only downloading from the 3FL filters. You will only need to disable the filter when you are adding games to your games list. Once that is done however you can just re-enable the IPSEC rules and download quota-free.

And a big thankyou for the di.fm streams... Goa All the way :D

Both of the 3FL Steam Content servers are 64bit boxes running a 64bit OS, with the recommended specs to host all of the content as outlined by Valve to us when we initially set them up (not the minimum specs).

As mentioned earlier by Dean, we don't have control over or visibility into what content is actually being served by the content servers at any given point in time. Our only involvement in the operation of the servers is the usual OS patching.

I think one factor that Valve may use, is how much traffic the server is generating. So if its sitting at 90+% of its available bandwidth at peak times with the content that it has on it, then they might deem there to not be much point in adding further content, but that's just me speculating so there could be other factors.

The one thing I've very sure of them both having on them is TF2, as the outbound traffic from both of the servers rises significantly every time a TF2 update is released.

Cheers,

Ben
