Hi all,

I have just received the CG814WG Wireless Modem from Telstra, and I've also got my DI624S router.

What I want to do is disable the wireless connection and use only one port on the Modem. From this one port, link it to my DI624S router where I will enable Wireless from it.

I know the IP address for the Modem is (192.168.0.1) and this is also the same for the Di624S, so I've set the DI624S to be 192.168.0.2.

However both the modem and router have DCHP functionality enabled.

Everytime I boot the computer, pluged into the DI624S, I can't connect to the Internet unless I turn off the modem and router from the power point and then reboot them.

Any suggestions? Am I doing anything wrong or could I do it better?

On which device?

Is it too late to return the CG814WG and just get an SB5100? If all you want is a vanilla cable modem and you want to use all the functionality of the DI624S, the latter seems like a better choice. (I have a DI624S with an SB5100 and it works fine and without hassle.)

Having said that, if you want to turn the CG814WG into a straight modem, have a read in the manual to see whether that is possible. (This model has only recently started to be sent out by Telstra so I don't know whether anyone can jump in with the right answer.)

Or is there some functionality of the CG814WG that you want to use?

Yea that's the idea. I want to turn the Modem into a plain modem (diasbling the wireless) and use the DI624S as the Wireless router.

I don't know, but will these two have any conflicts and hence not allow connection?

Do I need to consider the setup similar to that of connecting IDE HDD, where one is master and one is slave? Set the modem to Master and the Router to Slave???

Is there anything the DI-624 can do that the CG814WG can't do?

Why not just put the DI-624 in a drawer and use only the CG814WG?

Otherwise, as previously suggested your options are:
1. Turn off NAT and wireless on the CG814WG or
2. Turn off DHCP on the DI-624 and plug a LAN port into the CG814WG (turning the DI-624 into a switch/access point).

I know the IP address for the Modem is (192.168.0.1) and this is also the same for the Di624S, so I've set the DI624S to be 192.168.0.2.

This will be the source of your problem. If you have NAt enabled in both, then they need to be on different subnets. eg 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1

There is no comparison. Completely different animal.

Can it IP/MAC Filter? If so I'll put away the DI624S and use the CG814WG.

Will it work if one is enabled (Modem) and the other not (624S), or both either on or off together

It's not as simple as that. To turn the CG814WG into a modem, you are turning off much more than just the wireless. However if you do succeed in turning it into a modem, there should be no conflicts.

Most definitely. Note that this is the DI-624S, not the DI-624. The DI-624S supports two attached USB devices (e.g. printer, USB hard disk, USB flash drive) and has embedded FTP server, SMB server, web server, print server.

I would find it odd if someone bought the DI-624S (rather than the DI-624) and then didn't want to use the functionality.

The firewall on the DI-624S is pretty good too. I can't say whether it's better than the CG814WG because I haven't studied the manual of the latter.

The DI-624S has a reasonable range of choices for QoS. It wasn't obvious to me whether the CG814WG has QoS.

I have no doubt that the two devices could be combined in creative ways but it seems like a wasteful combination (i.e. a fair amount of duplication) and an ungainly combination.

(turning the DI-624 into a switch/access point)

And with care you could still use most of the embedded server functionality. (The most obvious loss of functionality would be that you could no longer directly control which services were offered on LAN and which were offered on WAN, where both are available, since the WAN side would not be used.)

2. Turn off DHCP on the DI-624

In this scenario you would also want to turn off the wireless on the CG814WG.

Well, I did advise you to get a SB5101i when you replaced your SB4200, and when Bigpond sent you the CG814WG you kept it, instead of sending it back. /forum-replies.cfm?t=962106 Reap what yea shall sow. (Sorry, but this problem was a little predictable.)

Anyway, somewhere on whirlpool I saw a thread where someone explained that a lot of the settings interface is turned off (or locked out) in ISP supplied CG814WG's, so you can't change all the settings. Sorry, I can't find that thread now. Perhaps the same person will see this thread. :D

That seems to be a generic problem with the CG814WG. It is geared up to be supplied by the ISP and so there is no manual and no firmware to download on the manufacturer's web site. Presumably not just settings but functionality as a whole may have been removed by the manufacturer at the behest of the ISP. These are reasons enough to prefer to purchase your network equipment elsewhere, other than the cable modem.

I did advise you to get a SB5101i

I should clarify that my reference to SB5100 above is a reference to any member of that family. I don't know the differences but mine is marked SB5101 (not SB5100 and not SB5101i). It's about two years old. I also have a somewhat older SB5100.
