Hi guys...
So I've been a TPG customer for a long time, I'd say about 3-4+ years now?
Thing is, I've ALWAYS been on around 8000kbps connection speed. Whilst I'm about 1kM from exchange, maybe 1300-1500m with wiring and what not. Let's just say I'm in that red-zone area within their map for ADSL2+ speeds.
I have a Netgear DG834G V3, connects at approx 8000kbps (TPG DSLAM MAP Suggests 16000-18500kbps). It's set to the usual VPI: 8 VCI: 35 DSL Mode: ADSL2+
Line Att.: down 25db up 5.5db Noise Margin: down 8db up 7db
TPG Support after many hours and me telling them what to look for, say it still shows up as though I have a modem set to ADSL2 not ADSL2+ and say they can't do much until I change it, 2 more tech supports later, they still don't understand that on my side whilst isolated, it's SET TO ADSL2+ !!! They insist I need a new modem *pouts*
Naturally I did an isolation test and tried a Billion 7402VGP from a friend as well with similar results. Another tech support call and same thing, they say it's not set to ADSL2+... need verified modem ($$?? will this even resolve it? Im thinking no)
Isolation test was run from the phone-port that comes off the street at front of house... I'm not sure what more I can do... is it a TPG setting gone wrong? An exchange setting gone wrong? WHAT CAN I DO TO RESOLVE THIS?
The TPG support guy says that's the best speed I can get in my area which is a bit silly all things considered.
Ideas? Recommendations? Am I doomed? Should I just suck it up know it's hopeless? I'm willing to try anything!

Im roughly the same distance away, i sync at 10980kbps roughly.
Not really sure what you can do, obviously if its set to ADSL2+ then you should be syncing at ADSL2+ speeds. But then again, the ADSL2+ DSLAMS at your exchange could be wacky... Only thing you can do is talk to TPG about it... If they dont want to help you out, there is always the TIO...

Hi raffie,
I do apologize for the inconvience caused. There seems to be some misunderstanding here.
You may have to check our terms and conditions; 1.1.3 Customers on ADSL2+ plans who are more than 3kms from the telephone exchange and/or with poor quality telephone lines may be limited to ADSL2 (G992.3) or ADSL1 (G992.1) modulation for stability purposes and due to technical limitation of Telstra infrastructure.
The possible cause of your sync speed issue is your line quality. You may still send us an email to forum_admin@tpg.com.au so that we can double check your connection status.
Regards, Jason

As per what Raffie said, he is only 1-1.5km/s away from the exchange.

It is not just the distance, as you can see line quality will also affect your connection stability and speed. and/or with poor quality telephone lines may be limited to ADSL2 (G992.3) or ADSL1 (G992.1) modulation for stability purposes and due to technical limitation of Telstra infrastructure.
Aside from the distance and line quality there other factors that will affect such as EMI, AM Radio frequency and others.

Hi guys... thanks for your replies, much appreciated.
Thing is, I've already been through the TPG Helpdesk support and they've informed me the connection has no interfering devices and what not so I guess I can't really improve things from my end here.
I guess ultimately what I'm hearing in the backdrop is that it's line quality or as you said jason, EMI or AM Radio... so ultimately, those issues, even if determined to be the problem source, cannot be resolved right?
I've put my modem back in my PC room, there's one interfering device in here but I still get same connection speed and quality etc as when I do at the front of the house. Ah well, wishful thinking haha, I always try to stay near an exchange, fast net means a lot to any IT Sys. Admins heart hey lol
