Oddly surprised with my sync speeds!! View full version

Hey all just thought i would let people know.

Live about 3 - 3.5 km from the exchange, using a billion 7401 vgm and im on iinet adsl 2+

I used to ( about 1 month ago ) sync at around 3.2 - 3.5 mbps range... now within the last month i have been syncing at speeds of 6 - 8.3 mbps and im loving it. I know its not much compared to those 18 - 24 mbps connections, but for my distance i think it's quite good.

Also i'm on thrillseeker and am not getting any attenuation on the line been up for about 18 hours and figures are still at 0 up and down.

Hope this doesn't jynx me.

I know there was no point to this post, how about i make one, anyone have any idea how this happened.. ? I haven;t changed anything in my setup within the last month.

Cheers.

Perhaps because some of the line between your house and the exchange has been renewed or a junction has been repaired, possibly because others on the line had been having difficulties.

It's all good, be happy.

haha i may have come off wrong.... but i am extatic!!!

Would you not say that the speeds im getting and attenuation for my distance is good ?

SNR Margin 5.0 dB 7.0 dB
Line Attenuation 34.5 dB 23.0 dB
CRC Errors 0 0

Yep. That looks good for 3 to 3.5ks.
And with an attenuation of 5.0 on thrillseeker, it should be stable enough. Don't be surprised if it drops a tad over time, then reconnects.
Mine usually shows 5.0 and then drops a little over time, but then reconnects again, but is usually pretty stable. Just noticed that mine is now down to 4.0, but has been up for nearly 6 days.

I'm happy, and am a net whore, but never am annoyed by drop outs or reconnects, because they are so rare.

Congrats lol. You're one of the lucky ones. I'm in the same boat, 3-3.5Mbps sync at the moment, with similar attenuation stats to yours.

It's not technically classed as a faulty line, but there's not enough reason to risk a telstra tech coming out to check out the line because of the potential $99 callout fee if telstra says "nothing is wrong". *sigh*

with those stats your more like 2KM away, I set up a net connection with almost identical stats up a few weeks ago and it syncs @ 12000/1000

Im 3.7KM away from the exchange (confirmed by a technician that came to my house) and my attenuation is ~ 55/35

Get a 7300G, they're great :)

I think finding sync speeds is standardised amongst Billions - Status - ADSL or something like that. Don't have my 7300 infront of me.

Um... I don't think you're accounting for 28 bytes of IP and ICMP headers.

1464+28=1492

If you try that ping with 1464, it probally won't fragment, but anything over will.

That's exceptionally good.

My cable records show 2.84 kms of copper consisting of 1.78 km of 0.40 copper and the rest in 0.64. Terminating onto a soldered frame at the exchange, through 7 moisture resin filled joins and two recently commissioned taps.

Central filter installed, recabled the entire house and I sync at 6400/1021.

Try au.billion.com/forums/in...p?showtopic=3571 for more info.

I've had it running on my 741GE and currently my 7401VP.

It won't work with a 7202/7300. You need this one instead:

au.billion.com/forums/in...p?showtopic=8042

If anyone is still running a 7202G, try to get the updated firmware from Billion. I don't mean the newest one displayed on the support page, there's newer versions that are available internally (probably because it runs the same chipset as a 7300). Just query the guys at the Billion forums for it. It improved the stability of the router quite a bit when I was still using mine.

Thanks. My neighbour's 7401VP expired last week and he replaced it with a 7300. I'll let him know.

I'm about 3k from the EX and sync at 6.4/1023 atm on thrillseeker, stability of my connection massively improved since having a C10 installed...by an LC I hasten to add. I was on the standard profile before until recently.
