What is the status of Intel Wireless card driver for nix? Has the situation improved in the last few months?
Thanks

I don't know what you mean but my card worked 'out of the iso' so to speak, it's an; 0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN Network Connection (rev 61)

I can't imagine it has improved much. Intel wireless has been working out the the (Ubuntu) box for at least two years. Which chipset are you concerned about?

On FreeBSD there is the wpi driver, allowing the use of Intel 3945abg based cards.
I was using an older version of the driver with limited success, I didn't realise a newer version was committed into FreeBSD 7.0.
All it needs is a kernel recompile after adding device wpi into your custom kernel conf. I'll see how this goes, I am currently recompiling as we speak.
[edit]
The wpi driver that comes with FreeBSD 7.0 seems to be working great =) previously the older version didn't seem to be working with WPA correctly.

Not really, I installed the driver 3 months ago, iirc, it wasnt neccessary to recompile the kernel. All you have to do is to append some lines into the /boot/loader.conf, sysclt.conf file and install new wireless firmware (yes, firmware, not driver).
It worked, but not perfectly, the only thing pissed me off and made me switch to ethernet is when it was idle, the transfer rate was down to 1Mbps, when it became active again, it went up s..l..o..w..l..y to 48, 54Mbps and the entire process usually took me ~10 sec! Well, no other choice, say goodbye to wireless!
PS1: but others report the driver works very well to them, well, try it, you might be lucky :)
PS2: good to know another FreeBSD fellow :)

I found the drivers shiped with ubuntu 7.10 to be buggy (randomly dropping out) but under 8.04 (which uses iwl3945) it works perfectly, have not had one dropout, stays connected for days+.

I think what this guy may be hinting to is that for the use of aircrack-ng the i9645 wireless isn't supported / doesn't work properly. As far as I'm aware there have been no improvements with regards to that

Good point I forgot about that, I did use kldload for the Nov2007 driver, but when I found it buggy on my system, I recompiled my kernel to have it hard coded.
PS2: good to know another FreeBSD fellow :)
vice-versa :-D
By the way, I've got it running on my ASUS F3JR laptop which is pretty good compatibility wise with FreeBSD/*nix.

But, seriously, how hard is to find the site with my previous typo address in google?
No offence, but you should learn how to search effectively before walking in the *nix world

I sometimes use an account I have on bsdforums, just last week I read a post where someone was saying everyone is moving to daemonforums.
