Hi, for so long my friends were saying my pings aren't good at all. I did a test at speedtest.net on my server city (Perth) and i got back with 2.5megabits/s and 98 ping.

I pinged my local areas with cmd and it came up like 80 to 150. I am getting such high ping in games aswell. The lowest ping i get in cs is 75....

What is goin on??

Please reply back if you guys need more info.

Optus Dsl Direct, gettin about 300kb/s max downstream on speedstream 4200 modem.

It depends on where the point of interconnect is, it's quite possible to reach the speedtest servers it goes via Sydney/Melbourne and back to Perth again.

There is no real need to be posting about pings unless its above 2000.

Im also having unusually higher pings. I did a traceroute which indicates theirs a few problems with the optus routing.

Lol? On Steam, when you see a server's ping as 2000 when it isn't responding. Anyway, I know you ain't being serious. Well, you ain't, right? Haha

So is the problem with optus or Telstra. Also i am connected to optus through Telstra line if that makes a difference.

This is what i hate about contracts... they know that they will get their stupid money as long as i am on contract and dont bother helping me with my internet!

I called them so many times and they say my line is fine... wtf

How so? Could you post a traceroute and show the problem that is being indicated.

Well Optus were routing by other routes with level3 and ntt before. Now they have routing with xo.com. The problem lies on the xo.com network.

That would mean that Optus' international point of interconnect (i.e Singtel on the West Coast of the U.S) is seeing a better route via xo.com than they are seeing from their other peers.

Routing on the internet is dictated more by the destination than by the source. Have a read...

This means that a service provider or host advertise the best route into their network, obviously limited by their physical peers. This way the network operator can best manage the cost of traffic coming into their network.

If the route used to transit the ntt and/or level3 networks, and now uses the xo.com network for transit it's either because of a failure somewhere in Asia, or that the destination is now paying better prices for their interconnect with xo.com, than their connections to the other two networks.
