I have been having trouble connecting my second computer to the internet for a couple of months now since I switched to Telstra Bigpond. This computer works fine with it, but my other computer (HP Pavilion Media Center PC a1260a) doesn't work with it at all. I tried hooking them both up to my D-Link DSL-504G ADSL router several times.

The thing is, it won't even connect when I just connect that computer to the 2071-A modem. I think the problem lies within that computer, but I'm not sure what. When everything's connected and turned on the other computer says "Local Area Connection Connected" but when I go into firefox, it doesn't work, when I go into internet explorer it goes to a site called, "dnserrorlist.com" and keeps refreshing rapidly.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you using that router at the moment or the 2071-A?

it won't even connect when I just connect that computer to the 2071-A modem.

Are you trying to use USB or ethernet?

Yes, I am using that router with the modem. It used to work when I was with Optus and I remember it worked just once for a day with Bigpond.

I am using Ethernet.

How do you have them connected?
The DSL-504g is an ADSL modem / router.

Well it only says ADSL Router...

I have a short ethernet cord in the first port of the router going into the only ethernet port on the modem. Then I have ethernet cords from each of the computers running into 2 ports under the first on the router. Then I have the phone line from the modem to the wall...

OK.
ADSL Router implies ADSL modem / router. The WAN port of the DSL-504 is the ADSL port (Phone line).
You could use the DSL-504g alone to get both computers going.

The problem appears to be that the 2 Wire modem isn't acting like a router (no NAT), so you could have a look in its manual to see if it does support NAT.

From each computer, goto a command prompt and type in
ipconfig /all
Tell us the IP address and default gateway that is listed.

[edit]
The other problem that you may be having is the DHCP server in the 504 handing out an IP address to the 'non working computer'.

Ok, Njed try it but the thing I most need help with is getting the other computer working on the internet. It doesn't even work when it's directly connected to the 2Wire modem alone. :\

"You could use the DSL-504g alone to get both computers going."

I tried just then, it didn't work on both computers.

I played around with it a bit and now when I connect both of them to the router, none of them work.

OK, IP Address and default gateway of this computer:
IP: 10.1.1.4
Default Gateway: 10.1.1.1

Non-working computer:
IP:10.1.1.6
Default Gateway:
10.1.1.1

Oh, and I found out that the 2Wire 2071-A modem supports NAT. I went through the settings (10.0.0.138) for the modem and found in the home network advanced settings part that it could be enabled - Public Proxied Subnet (NAT/Routed)

Do you want to use the wireless function of the 2071A?
If the answer is yes;
1. Go the config menu of the 504g and disable the DHCP server
2. Connect the ethernet cable from the 2071A to 504g
3. Connect computers to 504g ports as the 504g now acts just as a switch.
In this case the 2071A acts as a router and does NAT, but a quick look at the manual makes me feel that this is its default config.
Maybe the config of your 2071A has been changed??
If you wanted, you could replace the 504g with a cheap switch.
You may need to go to a command prompt and type
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
or do a repair connection in XP, to ensure you obtain a new IP address from the device that is now the DHCP server.

If you don't want / need wireless, the 504g should do what you want in a single box.
1. Disconnect the 2071A and put it aside.
2. Connect phone line to 504g.
3. Connect computers to 504g ethernet ports.
4. Using 504g web config, set up you username and password, probably using PPPoE and connection method.

I don't have a wireless router, if I did I would choose that option so I could use my PSP and PS3 easier...

"4. Using 504g web config, set up you username and password, probably using PPPoE and connection method."

Could you go into a little more detail with that? I'm completely unsure of what to do.

Thanks.

I was relying on information at bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc/h...amp;model_id=584, and is a little hard to follow.
Telstra and the 2wire site didn't specifically mention the 2071A.

Could you go into a little more detail with that? I'm completely unsure of what to do.
Dlink DSL-504g manuals are at www.dlink.com.au/tech/Do...filetyp e=Manuals

The Quick Installation Guide should step you through the setup.

Hmm... it didn't work. When I connected the LAN line into the router from the wall and the ethernet cords into the ports from the computers, removed the 2Wire modem, both computers don't work.

I went to 10.1.1.1 to go into the Router config, ran the setup wizard, did everything right I think, it rebooted and nothing... :\

I hope I don't have to get someone of profession to come in to do it for me...

What is the status light doing?
What is the ADSL light doing?

Go to 504g web config pages and have a look at the status info.
What is Device Information, Connection Status?
What is ADSL Staus, Line State?

Both lights were flickering, on the config I saw that it said disconnected somewhere, then I clicked connect under it but it did nothing.

Maybe have a look at Status, Logs for some help.
You didn't mention anything about the ADSL Status, Line State page.

Did you type your username and password correctly, and are you sure you know what they are?
Was there anything in the Setup wizard that you were unsure of?

I went to the status tab and all I could go into was that.

I see:

Firmware Version: R2.01.B12.AU(030917a/Y1.21.1)

LAN -Ethernet
MAC Address ************
IP Address 10.1.1.1
Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0
DHCP Server Enabled
NAT Enabled
WAN
Virtual Circuit
Connection Status Disconnected

IP Address -
Subnet Mask -
Default Gateway -
DNS Server Enabled
Cancel

I couldn't click the Log, Traffic and ADSL options on the left side...

Maybe you don't have ADSL sync (Startup Handshake).
Maybe you didn't wait long enough to let things happen.

Do you have filters on anything (everything) else plugged into the phone line?

And yes, I have filters on everything plugged into the phone lines.

Can you go back to the ADSL line status screen and wait a while, monitoring the Line State.
Then tell us the 5% of things in the setup you weren't sure about.

The problem is, when I connect both computers to the 504g and connect that to the 2071A, the internet doesn't work on both computers so I can keep posting here and monitor the line state at the same time. :\

I went into tools then test and it said:

Testing Connectivity to modem
Testing Ethernet connection PASS
Testing ADSL Connection
Testing ADSL line for sync FAIL

Does it have something to do with the ADSL modulation type? It is currently set to G.dmt, there are 3 other options... T1.413, G.lite and Multimode

You shouldn't need to use the 2071A at all.
The 504g is a ADSL modem / router just like the 2071A, but it has four ethernet ports, rather than one, and you need to use two of them.

You need to disconnect the phone line from the 2071A and connect it to the 504g, then have a look at the Status, Line State information.

G.dmt should be fine.

It's not working, even with this computer.

I had it on all day and the Line state kept switching to red and startup handshake. :\

I had the phone line in the 504g, both computer ethernet cords into it, all filters in.

a point to note the only thing that should be left unfiltered is the adsl router

if you had paytv installed before activation of an adsl service it might pay to have the spare line that has the paytv on might be faullty as some paytv installers might not be qualified enough to be adding sockets for phone service, botched installs can and do happen, which can cause interference with your adsl connection, any modem connection the paytv service will require an adsl filter, same as a monitored alarm...

get switch with a wan connection, make sure modem is set as dchp server don't use the switch as login as you will lock up the switch..

Go to your Local area Connection then click properties >> General Tab : double click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Then Choose :
Obtain IP address automatically .
Obtain DNS Server address automatically .

and it will work with you .. Just Try

some adsl routers can't be configured in a way the OP has described their firmware isn't built like that..

I'd be running a 1 signal port adsl modem with a linksys 54gl and see if that works

as for the connection issue if you're still failing to get an adsl signal then call isp and get them to do a service check on your line as by the sounds of it you got no adsl sync on your phone line since it's not even registering an adsl signal

to login isp on dlink all use is a username and password when the dlink router is connected to the phone line...
dlinks don't use a full email address login.
when doing adsl login do it with the adsl modem/router

all tcp/ip setting should be set to auto let the router issue the ip's... making MSwin do it might cause network lockup..

to be honest i wouldn't rely on dlink adsl products to hold a stable connection
