I'll start with mine.
Lets see...
Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines - my god this game had me hooked right from the start to finish and I dare say is one of the greatest RPGs I've ever played.
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay - had graphics that resembled Doom 3 over a year before Doom 3 was even out and beats out Doom 3, FEAR, Farcry etc. as having one of the best single player experiences I've ever seen.
Imperium Galactica II - Think Civilization but in space and done extremly well. Pity not many people knew much about it.

"The Neverhood" for me - a 1996 claymation adventure game for pc, that sadly fell in to oblivion when adventure games became less popular. It still has a cult following though.

Hunter Hunted (1996)
A side-scrolling action computer game developed by Sierra Entertainment. The player controls a humanoid creature (either a muscular human called Jake or a minotaur-like creature named Garathe Den) who fights enemies, completes objectives, and tries to find the hidden exit in each level. Wikipedia

The the single player was engrossing, spent many weeks of my life completing missions with a riveting story. The multiplayer was awesome! (2 ppl on one terminal).
...going to see if i can find it now!

Also: Although not a game, I think 'The Art Of Flying' demo released by BlueMoon way back, was the best air combat game ever.

The Creed
So underrated i can't even Google a link!
Released around 2000, it was set in the future with two characters to choose from, a bounty hunter and the guy she was trying to capture.
They crash into a city and take missions for 3 factions. One was your regular government type role, another was a gang, and the last was some doomsday cult.
It was free-roam like GTA, you could jack hovercars, have shootouts and it had multiple endings.

Total Overdose.
Most of teh negative stuff you see in reviews is true. However it somehow transcends all that because it's so much fun all the negatives are insignificant.
It's short, it's fairly easy, it as little substance, but the most fun I'd had in a long time on my PC.

I don't think they are underrated just unknown by todays audience. Though they probably would be underrated because of there dated graphics because we all know graphics make a game :P
Noctropolis is one Ive found that not many people have played but it still a great game. Same for Syndicate Wars, Oni and the Gabriel Knight series.

I was going to suggest this as soon as I say the title of the thread. Amazing game. Extremely atmospheric, especially the Haunted House early in the game. And it had one of the greatest small moments ever, playing as a Malkavian and having a conversation with a stop sign.

I fancied that one but didn't go there because of the bugginess I read about everywhere. Given it's mostly bug free with the unofficial patches now is it really worth going for or is the age of it going to set my teeth on edge now? :\

I suggest you check your facts in the future. Doom 3 was released in August 2004. CoR:EfBB was released in December 2004 (the several-month difference between the release dates of the Xbox and PC versions was due to the engine getting a bit of a beef-up for its PC debut).

Chronicles of Riddick was one of the best single player shoot em up experiences up there with Half Life 2 and Doom 3 (IMO I even found the experience more fun than those 2). It got rave reviews from everywhere but the public almost paid it no notice.
Vampire Bloodlines as everyone mentioned is extremely buggy but there are big unofficial patches which make it stable as hell and it still holds up well against todays games due to it using the HL2 engine. Bloodlines isn't just a game IMHO, it's an experience all in itself. The 2 weeks or so I spent absorbing that game was like taking a 2 week vacation into another life.
Oh and speaking of immersive games, I also find Fallout 2 rather underrated. Those people who did check it out back in the day were greatly rewarded by 10/10 gameplay.

Hmm...
FFXI. You heard me. Most people give up on the game early on because it's so brutal, so they never realise how epic some of its storylines get. Particularly Chains of Promathia which is better than most single player FFs.
Alundra 1 on PS1 (definitely not its "sequel"). A Zelda clone that's better than any Zelda to me.
Jeanne D'Arc on PSP. Best srpg I've played.
Those are a few that come to mind. I can't really call any of the PC/DS/360 games I've played recently underrated.

Mission Critical - This game was one of the first multi-CD games - it used 3 CD's!! Plus it had great voice acting from the likes of Michael Dorn who was in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
The following games are rated greatly, but long forgotten:
Full Throttle, Monkey Island, The Dig - Seriously, LucasArts made some of the best games back in the day. Such deep storylines and epic gameplay.
Rebel Assault 1 and 2, X-Wing (plus the B-Wing expansion), Tie Fighter, X-Wing versus Tie Fighter, X-Wing Alliance - OMG ... these games are what's missing from today's gaming options. SPACE FLIGHT SIMS. For star wars fans, these games were THE BEST of their time (XvT and XWA would still be the best if we had enough people to bring back the communities). XvT was absolutely great when played within a gaming organisation. I personally was a leader of the Aussie sections of The Last Starfighters (LSF) gaming league. If anyone remembers this league, send me an IM for nostalgia (I went by the name of MooMan and then Thunder in those days). That was when the Internet Gaming Zone was introduced (and owns what is there today), plus we had gaming ladders where people challenged people above them for fame and glory. I think the highest ranking I got was 18 in the world!
To the person that mentioned Little Big Adventure 2: Twinsen's Odyssey. OMG .... TOTALLY AGREE!! For what initially seems like a shitty kids game ... i had SO MUCH FUN playing it to the end. It was so challenging!
Kings Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Quest for Glory Anthology, Legends of Kyrandia Series - These games are going back a fair way, but i spent countless hours getting stuck on the simplest of problems. They are available to download from most good Abandonwarez sites and I highly recommend you do so for some nostalgia on a cold rainy day.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - Absolutely the best 2-player turn-based strategy game!

hmm this is turning into a nostalgia thread, of which we already have one
I think Railroad Tycoon 3 and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri were underrated PC games.
On Xbox1 it was Chronicals of Riddick, The Godfather and there was an army clone of GTA which I can't remember the name of.

Planescape:Torment and Fallout series would be other candidates. Simply no-one I know in RL have heard of them. Evil Genius is another, perhaps?

I was very interested in this game, but I read its the most detailed game ever. The manual in itself looks like a novel and you gotta devote yourself to researching the game like a religious fanatic to become good at it.

I would say Transport Tycoon is overrated more than underrated based on the hype I read about it on forums.
I was thinking "hmm I remember this game being kinda crap, maybe I was wrong because all these people can't be wrong, I will try OpenTTD. Oh its crap like I thought".
You guys who think TTD is good, should try RRT3, that is a massively underrated game.

Underrated doesn't just mean that critics gave it bad reviews...
It also applies to games that weren't received as widely as they should have been.

I really enjoyed The Longest Journey and The Longest Journey 2: Dreamfall, no one I know had even heard of them before I mentioned them. The gameplay was fairly average (and thats if you like point-and-click adventures), but I really enjoyed the story.

The First Ghost Recon.
I remember PCPP gave it a 7/10. The atmosphere and graphics made it a much better game than that.
Totally OT, but I think Super Mario World 2:Yoshi's Island was malto underrated. I'm honestly not a nintendo fanboy, i haven't lovingly embraced a nintendo since the snes.

Interstate 76. Dreamfall - The Longest Journey (played this on the XBox though). One of my most memorable games in recent times. Fahrenheit.
Oh I also think Commandos was sweet. The XBox version of Commandos 2 was so difficult though, too many keys/buttons.
Finally, the original Postal! If only more people got to play that..

Even though it was on playstation 1 i feel this has to be mentioned - Star Wars: Jedi Power Battles. This by far has got to be one of the best co-op games i have EVER played.
You and a mate running through all the single player missions just smashing droids and things, the best thing is if you got good at using block you could deflect lasers back at enemies ;)

My vote's for Deathlord. Quite underrated, and yet it was one of the largest and most complex RPGs out there at the time. It was amazing what they were able to fit on two disks - Starflight was big, but Deathlord rivalled it for sheer scale.

loss4words writes... i'm beginning to think no-one in this thread understands this difference between 'old' and 'underrated'.
Well of course there is a blooming difference; games can be considered old, yet also underrated as well.
Total Annihilation is a classic case. This game was a RTS revolution. It offered true LoS, 3D maps and units, a damn excellent soundtrack, a physics system, an interface that allowed for pausing and queuing of commands, a combat system that was not based on the proposterous rock-papper-scissors system still used by most RTS games today, and probably a bunch of other things I can't remember.
Despite the innovation and the game going on to gain critical praise and industry awards, it was largely overshadowed by Warcraft and Command and Conquer. I recall reading that Total Annihilation failed to reached number one in the weekly charts which, coincidentally, Total Annihilation: Kingdoms (another underrated game :D) managed to reach.
Magic Carpet's history is also quite similar. The game was revolutionary; an original setting coupled with a compelling plot (admittedly more so in Magic Carpet II), dynamic music and an out of this world particle system (meteor spell baby!) in a full 3D world that even featured real-time terrain deformation! This was back in the mid-90s.
However it was overshadowed that year by a little game called 'Doom'.
This factor and a culmination of several others (eg. perhaps too ahead of its time and required a kickarse rig as a result) lead to Magic Carpet not being a commercial success as expected.
You know loss4words, my reply to you made me realise how much I miss companies like Bullfrog, Origin Systems, Microprose, Spectrum Holobyte, LucasArts (adventure games and X-wing/Tiefighter era), Looking Glass Studios, Black Isle Studios...I thought they would go on forever. They were passionate about making games and valued innovation and pushing the envelope in meaningful ways. *shuffles off in depression*

I was a huge text-based adventure junkie and an avid reader back then, and Portal not only fed my cravings but also offered graphics as well :) Also, how's this for old school? I had the C64 version!
Oh, for those who are slightly confused, here's a link to the subject of our nerdish discussion: www.mobygames.com/game/portal Cafeman writes... My vote's for Deathlord. I remember Deathlord ... I remember it confused the hell out of me with all the Japanese terms for the monsters, spells, equipment and stuff. I ended up playing Ultima instead and learning how to read druidic runes - yeah the irony :)

oh completely. i guess it's difficult for me to see it as underrated because every gamer i've ever known has absolutely loved it.
Magic Carpet's history is also quite similar.
i absolutely adored this game. i used to sit at home and play it for hours and hours on end, what an amazing concept for its time. i think if someone remade this today, exactly as it was with shiny graphics, i would buy it in a heartbeat and no-one would see me for weeks. the WHOOSH noise when you did your speed boost thing is burned into my head forever and i still laugh when i hear that sample pop up in TV and movies today.
You know loss4words, my reply to you made me realise how much I miss companies like Bullfrog, Origin Systems, Microprose, Spectrum Holobyte, LucasArts (adventure games and X-wing/Tiefighter era), Looking Glass Studios, Black Isle Studios...I thought they would go on forever.
oh i completely agree. i loved full throttle, x-wing and tie fighter took so so so many hours. i still remember the first time i beat the x-wing mission where you had to destroy the matrix of laser mines. i was so unbelievably excited. and then tie fighter with its gauraud (sp?) shading, graphics were unbelievable! at last i was living the dream haha. i used to love microprose simulations (specifically, B17 and F19) as well .. it'd be difficult to launch a proper adventure game in today's marketplace. i don't even think that with an amazing story it could be done successfully .. that makes me a little bit sad too :(
i still remember being shocked at the end of police quest 3 when you finally shot the bad guy, the multiple paths and endings of kings quest 6 when you finally get into the castle, the sheer random weirdness of space quest 3 and how long i spent playing the super chicken game in the diner. maybe i'd actually play pc games still if there was some of that available - something that meant more to you than twitch-reflex shooting of nameless, faceless enemies?
(well, faceless after you blow their face off)

The game had so much potential and could have been a lot better :) The whole emotion system was just for show, the game featured meh-ish SP and MP maps (Minas Tirith and Helm's Deep done properly would have rocked!), the rock-paper-scissor system was in full-force, default population limits were constricting, character creation wasn't as extensive as I would have liked, and it felt that it didn't push the genre forward at all. It was a solid game - don't get me wrong - but unfortunately easily forgettable. I did like the flanking system though :)
