Hi guys, thought i might ask this question if no one else has already...but basically i'm looking into getting an External HDD to work on my video editing on my apple mac. Can anyone recommend any that i should be getting and that might be available from JBhifi. I prefer to get one with a Firewire 800mbps connection so i can plug my video camera in the normal firewire outlet on my macbook pro. Anyone have any suggestions?

JB Hifi won't have many Firewire-800 drives, so you may not have much choice there. My work recently got a couple of MyBook 500gb drives which have been pretty good but I think they only have Firewire400. Edit: there is a pro version that has FW800.

LaCie have firewire (800 & 400) plus USB HDD - they are reasonable price these days - my LaCie 500GB still works fine (touch wood - I hear that some users have had problems) and the Firewire 800 connection flies, although for video editing firewire 400 (perhaps even USB) should be fine...

I wouldn't bother with USB, especially for video work. The average transfer rate is considerably lower than even FW400.

Agreed that FW800 flies. Here's to the upcoming FW3200!

I haven't noticed much speed difference between firewire 400 and 800... and usb is almost as fast, but I find that firewire is really good when it comes to daisy chaining hard drives so I have settled on firewire.

You can try and build your own, just find an enclosure that has the connections that you want.

Or go for something like this:
www.nexus.com.au/catalog...products_id=1807

Or this, IceCube Paleadies (spell?) or something like that, they had a ComboS model that had heaps of connections. But for some reason, can't find that enclosure or external drive now :(

Hope it helps

I've only seen the basic USB2.0 (Essentials Ed.) model available at JB. And most of the time they don't stock WD. Better to get it elsewhere, and get one with FW400/800!

I'm using a 1TB WD Home Edition unit, erased all the crap software originally found on the HD, and formatted the drive to HFS+ with 2 partitions, 1 for general storage, and the other for Time Machine. As for my Windows OS, I use MacDrive for read/write permissions.

I prefer WD all-in-one units as they require no assembly, they look great, power on/off according to my MBP, and is extremely quiet.

Guys, just an update in regards to the portable HDD. I'll be getting the WD MyBook® Home Edition for video editing as it has firewire connection, so i'd assume it'll do what i need it to! ^_^ Will be picking it up from Office works. ^__^
