Hey,

Just had a phone interview with Qantas. Questions were basically: reason for wanting to work for Qantas, long term career goals, then behavioural questions about comunication and time manegement skills. I'm going for the corportate stream so can only advise about this stream.

The guy interviewing me pretty much said to check my email for info regarding the Assessment Centre. Anyone have any info or experience at the Qantas AC.

It should take around 5 minutes.
They asked me about a challenging situation that happened to me in the past, a time management question and simple things about my degree. No details at all ..
I believe that I didn't do well, I'll see how it goes .. Good luck with yours.

hi italk:

thanks for the hints... i didn't expect it only took about 5mins to do it... actually i think you don't have to worry about it too much... it's kind of learning the interview experience... i had one i-bank phone interview few days ago and it took about 45mins(my brain just went blank somehow).... hope Qantas one is getting better.. :)

Good luck to those that still have their phone interview with Qantas.

Hays (recruitment agency) are conducting the interviews. Mine went for about 15-20 minutes.

I was told that they are interviewing 500 out of the 3000 applicants. Was just wondering whether anybody knew how many they are taking to the assessment centre.

Cheers

Hey Amy,

They weren't very hard questions. Just the stock standard ones:
ie - Why do you want to work for Qantas?
Why do you want to work for that particular stream (ie Corporate)
What are your long terms career goals?
Then he asked me a few behavioual questions:
- Tell me of time you had difficulty in communicating something
- tell me a time where you were faced with time contraints
umm, she asked another 2 behavioural questions but cannot remember them for the life of me.

Ummm.. He also explained the role and that I would be working and having to relocate to Sydney (I'm from Mel)

Hmm.. Think that's about all.

Goodluck.

Throwing a question out there - I got the email asking to book for a phone interview, however I won't be proceeding with the QANTAS application...

Does this decision warrant a call to QANTAS letting them know that I'll be rescinding my application, or should I just let it go?

Mine was similar..but not the same. He didn't ask about my long term career goals I don't think, but he did ask the others as well as the one about being the CEO of Qantas..

QANTAS would be a great employer, however the move to Sydney and foregoing a Big 4 opportunity here at home doesn't seem like the right choice for me. I'll just apply to QANTAS after a few years in a Big 4 I think!

I have noticed that many employees in their corporate offices tend to stay with the company for many years. It's likely that they are looking for employees who aren't looking at Qantas merely as a 'stepping stone' to go somewhere else. I can vouch that the turnover rate in Qantas is very low.

The attrition rate is low because the jobs are very airline specific, with only two major airlines in Australia their skills are in low demand. This is not the case for IT though as skills are transferable, but it seems Qantas has outsourced most of it to Telstra, IBM, Tata etc.

That is extremely false.
My old man works for Qantas as an instructor, they are in huge demand, and it is hard to attract staff because they earn more dollars working overseas and basically they can just walk into a job anywhere they want. The reason they stay is due to having Loyalty (which the current up and starting generation rarely have) and the fact that they want to stay in a certain location eg. live in sydney/brisbane or melbourne and not move overseas

I wouldn't say it's extermely false, yes there may be demand overseas, but like I said there is only two major airlines in Australia, so if you want to stay in Australia you are pretty much stuck at Qantas.

But they are in High demand still.
They are that understaffed that they have the bargining power, eg. Virgin say hey come work for us, old man tells Qantas ok I got a better offer at Qantas, Qantas go well here is a pay rise to stay.
And so you know there is not just Qantas, but Jetstar, Virgin, Tiger, all the regionals, and international airlines have staff here too

It is a double-edged sword. You're in a niche market but risk not being able to move around very much. However at present there is a shortage of staff in the airline industry. Remember that Qantas posted record profits in 2007 so they are doing extremely well.

www.qantas.com.au/region...=2008/feb08/3722

So what you say is true...Qantas staff might be "stuck" at Qantas, but at least for now it's a good company to get stuck in. :)

Those mature people that a looking for long term career with Qantas will be more likely to be employed.

If your resume shows that you can't hold a job for more than a couple of years will find it more difficult. why...because they wont invest tens of thousands in your training only to find you hop from job to job!!

I feel like the only reason why i was called back because in the phone interview i knew exactly what i wanted to do at qantas and i emphasised my career aspirations and how that matched their needs.

HR is really a black box for most recruitment, it just depends. I think they love diverse experience (but also holding a job for a while) For eg i was in the same company for around 2.5 years (1 year then 1.5 years) in two totally different areas. So whilst it's diverse i still held onto each for 1+ year(s).

I just completed it. Took me a bit over an hour I think.

Some parts were quite difficult I thought. Especially the word association bit..ughh that was horrible. The matrix thing and the number sequences were difficult at times too, but not too bad overall. The long passages are okay, but there were a couple I was a bit 50/50 on. I'm annoyed that I missed out clicking a couple of answers due to my net lagging and then running out of time. I clicked on them and it kept loading then said time was up :/

OK just to clear a few things up based on what I know.

wHiRl-pULL writes...

Those mature people that a looking for long term career with Qantas will be more likely to be employed.

Qantas is just like every other employer these days and is expecting Graduates with experience, i.e. you have completed at least 1 work experience placement during your Uni life (the more the better your chances but more importantly it is what you can say you have learnt from these).
So don't worry if you haven't done any other work.

aqzh1 writes...

Qantas does have a lot of IT roles outsourced however there is very little work which is offshored. But keep in mind a lot of these roles are ones which most large companies outsource (i.e. programming, helpdesk) and the core IT roles such as Architecture, Project Management, Relationship Management etc are all in house still. So if you are not into the techy side of IT, Qantas has a lot to offer.

In regards to job security within Qantas I would say it is quite high if you commit yourself to the job, as a lot of staff have been in the company for 10+ years.

ziggyboy writes...

For graduates you will do the psych test online first and then another one in the group assessment stage. The test was probably the easiest of all the tests I completed last year so it's nothing to worry about.

Definitely be patient as schedules can change and do change, this applies to all your Graduate applications. I believe one company last year was delayed by 1-2 months because they lost all their data.

Well hope this clears a few things up and good luck to everyone with your applications with Qantas and all the other companies you have chosen to apply to.

Well, I worked for Qantas IT for 6 years, until very recently. Yes, they have out-sourced a lot. yes, jobs remain for roles such as Business Analysts, Project Managers etc. But something in Qantas IT has died. It's not a very pleasant environment.

I would advise you to think twice about how much of a "great employer" they really are. Yes, they used to be and in some ways still are. But I can tell you this for nothing, if you're ambitious, there are NO opportunities for career progression within Qantas IT. In other areas of the company it is possible to move around, be promoted etc. Not in IT. Not anymore.

Also, the reason people remain with Qantas for years and years is because of the perks, pure and simple. If anyone thinks it is because they will ever give you a payrise to match what the market is paying, you will be very disappointed.

I don't mean to be all negative. I loved working there for quite some time ... but things have changed & I felt that some poor innocent grads should know the truth.

I don't really want to comment much on this but I have an IT role in a non-IT department. Most of the people in IT seem to be contractors except for a few BA's. My pay is actually pretty good compared to industry standards but probably because I'm technically not considered an IT professional (although my role is. Weird I know, but it totally works out for me!).

One of the managers in my department who have been with Qantas for over 20 years said we would probably have been better off if IT wasn't outsourced. I think non-IT departments are building small IT departments for themselves discreetly....meaning they have non-IT titles but with IT roles! If you have worked for Qantas then you know that the departments are "semi-automonous", having the power to hire staff on their own based on their own budget. I, for instance, went for interviews with HR staff in my department and a couple of managers...and my role was never advertised on the Qantas website! They (my department, not Qantas as a whole) independently advertised the role on Seek!

I found the psychometric test fairly easy. Others that I have done (i.e. Big 4) were a bit harder. This one had a few sections covering: numerical patterns, matrix patterns and engligh tests (i.e. foot is to leg as ____ is to arm). They are all multiple choice.

Dont stress. You'll be fine.. All the best..

Does anyone know when they will tell us about the next stage?

Cheers

Engineering is a big department but I know for a fact that certain roles involve frequent travel. A former engineer transferred to our department just a few months ago. Said that he got sent to Jakarta, Bangkok, Singapore, Malaysia, and the list goes on...pretty much anywhere Qantas flies. Simple fact is, there are engineering issues in all airports that Qantas flies to, and in most cases they would rather fly Qantas engineers than hire locals.

I know for a fact that there is a team in Jakarta of Aussie engineers that gets rotated quite frequently (flying back and forth to Sydney).

I still haven't received a call from them (IT). Hmm..

I guess if I don't, it'll probably be a good thing cause I don't want to potentially toss up between Qantas and Westpac ><

Last year it was one-on-two, i.e. yourself being interviewed by a HR representative and a manager from your particular stream (IT, HR, Finance etc).

They have set questions which they will ask you and it is also an opportunity for you to find out more about Qantas, the graduate program and your particular stream. Some of the questions are more specific to your stream and some are the general ones (team work, difficult people etc).

Good luck to everyone and well done on getting this far.

I hope QANTAS IT's grad placement is better than it was when I joined them in 1997.

Two of the best candidates were placed in Finance (against their desire) with no work to do. Both left within 8 months, despite constant pleading for a transfer or for more work.

I got a call today for an interview next week.

Is the person who calls you the person that will be interviewing you? They said they'd see me next week so I'm assuming he'd be the manager interviewing, perhaps?

Hey all,

I still haven't heard anything since the online questionnaire. Do you think I should call or just leave it.

I'm in two minds about this one. I recently got an offer elsewhere (that I'm quite happy anout) but was hoping to potentially weigh it up with other options.

Hmmmmm... Who knew grad positions would take so much time and energy???!!!

Try (02) 9691 3636 which is the Sydney head office and just ask them to put you through to HR. When I was having trouble booking a phone interview I got straight through to the grad recruitment team. You may be on hold for a while though. Good luck!
