Hi all, I have managed to work out to share the blue bigpond usb connected modem, between 2 computers easily. So i thought i would share. Firstly on the main machine that the modem runs from , set the lan connection to use ip 192.168.0.1 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Then go to start run and type CONTROL INETCPL.CPL, then go to the connections tab and LAN settings, check the use a proxy server for your LAN.Enter in 192.168.0.1 and port 1080 and check bypass proxy server. Ok on your "sharing" computer go to the LAN icon, properties and enter in 192.168.0.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0, Default gateway set to 192.168.0.1 and check "use following DNS" And enter 192.168.0.1 Repeat the CONTROL INETCPL.CPL process but put in 192.168.0.2 instead. Also then on your main computer in connections right click the bigpond wireless icon and properties advanced and allow to share that connection. Make sure once these settings have been entered you have enabled both LANS. And thats how i done it, and its working great. Hope this helps as i found this a lot easier than trying to set it up throgh ICS and thinking of expensive docks/routers etc.
Cheers.

Yeah, I found it surprisingly easy to share the Connection Manager's connection in Vista (no need to create a dial-up connection). Just set a fixed IP and subnet mask on the main PC's LAN connection - I didn't need to do this on the other PC - left that as Auto-assigned. Then just select to Share the Bigpond connection as you say. Works great.
I didn't find it quite so easy in XP (Dual booting this PC). Are you using Vista or XP?
Cheers.

I am using XP on the main machine, and w2k pro, on the receiving, w2k wouldnt work just with auto detect, hence having to manually set them.
But heh works great and inexpensive, hope more can benifit.
Cheers.

Why use a docking station when the above steps posted works without buying anything? Unless of course you want to share to more than one other machine, then you could just run an inexpensie hub?.....
Cheers.

cos setting up a computer to be used as a router is not like setting up a toaster. your average joe isnt going to have the technical know how to jump into the network settings of their pc to setup internet sharing. they just want to plug in their toaster and cook some toast.

They's some very expensive toasters being suggested! Better to try jumping into the settings methinks. It's not all that hard.

it might not be hard, but you're missing the point of my post. imagine if your grandma was trying to do this. would she know what "IP" means? or what a "gateway" does in computer terms? she could, i dont know your grandma. but they would rather have something that would just do it for them.

But your point is somewhat pointless - sure, Grandma's not likely to have a go at this, but neither is she going to be reading these forums! I'd expect the vast majority of folks who read this thread to be quite capable of following these instructions. edwinfelix writes... dumb question time, are we talking about a wireless connection? and will it work with a Vista on the main machine and XP on a notebook. In my case it was using a wireless LAN and Vista on both pc's. With XP the OP's directions should work ok.

Then I'd just buy Grandma a Mac... All she would have to do is turn on Internet sharing and she would be done.

It still amaze's me. To the negative people that have replied, go and spend your money on docking stations fine with me, and im assuming if you can read a forum post you can follow instructions, that are pretty clear.<edit> Unless of course you are a grandma apparently. Jethed, Ven, save your negativity, Everyones entitled to an opinion fair enough, but why would you spend a stupid amount of money on somethng you dont need, this post was just intended to help others and not cost anything.

Thanks FG. Being a computer dummy I will give that a shot tonight. Stay tuned. If I can do it anyone can. LOL. But be prepared for the yelling & screeming if I stuff it up. :)

OK FG it didn't work.
I get an error "There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network". I set up no 1 computer then tried conecting to the internet first before I bothered with no 2 computer. Would there be a prob with this?? Also when setting up the lan connection should I also be putting something in the DNS server addresses.
I've guessed at a couple of your steps though. I go to network connections, click properties on Bigpond Wireless Broadband. Go down to Internet Protocol & click on properties. That's where I put the IP addresses. Am I totally wrong by assuming that's where I need to go?? Remember you're dealing with a dummy here so please be nice. :)

Yes. It's your LAN connections where you need to be setting the IP addresses. The BigPond connection should have IP addresses set automatically (which is the default). Re-read the OP's original post carefully.

Yes as Jangle said, you need to do these steps in the LAN connection, which should be an icon next to your bigpond icon. Control panel, network connections, Local area connection. Right click it, properties, scroll down to tcp/ip, left click to highlight, click the properties button. Hope this helps you find the right spot.
Cheers

Nope still doesn't work.
Though everything seems to be connecting when I open the internet I get the "Cannot Find Server" page.
Should there be anything in the DNS boxes on the first computer??

OK if I don't do this bit
"Then go to start run and type CONTROL INETCPL.CPL, then go to the connections tab and LAN settings, check the use a proxy server for your LAN.Enter in 192.168.0.1 and port 1080 and check bypass proxy server."
The connection to the internet on no 1 computer works OK. But I can't get it to connect on the other computer.

All works fine until I put the "use a proxy server for your LAN". Drat it all.
Do you have any DNS settings on your main computer??

FG, I'm not even too sure the problem lies with Vista as this computer won't connect to the internet once I load those settings into the connections tab. That's before I even bother with the Laptop.
