Time for a new thread.
On a related note, found this little gem. Hmm, did anyone just notice some deja-vu happening again?
Anyhow, on with the boilerplate...

This is part 5 of the discussion of the new Whirlpool site design.

The new design will function, but won't be pretty. * If you really want the old design back, somebody has to implement it in CSS. Colour doesn't seem to get a mention, what does this tell you?
Complaining about the colour brown does not constitute constructive feedback.
So we can complain about blue though? ;-)
Like everything, we get used to it or leave!

That the tiny minority of pedantic, whiny and metaobsessed users has grown in proportion to the general population on Whirlpool?
EDIT: Hang on a moment...

As long as it is "in proportion", then nothing has changed. :)

Can I list the "brown" complaints?
It's like giving your kid a dumb name, you love it, and stuff what anyone else thinks. But the kid suffers from all the jokes.
As much as I bag the colour, I (mostly) do like what you have done.

Can I list the number of times I've ignored them? As I've previously stated, I'm not taking my aesthetic cues from a vocal minority, and I'm not doing design by consensus.
I get the picture. A bunch of you hate the brown! Well, I really don't care what some people think of the colour palette, beyond any practical issues of accessibility or usability. Build a bridge, paint it brown, and get over it!
I happen to like the brown. It's an unusual combination for blue, but I really think it works, and unusual is good in an era of excessive trend-following. Whereas blue and orange is probably one of the most common complementary color schemes on the planet.

You could now be referred to as a "trendsetter". :)

Its 'unusual' for a reason. Because its flapen ugly as hell and no one else with two working eyes would use the combination. I can deal with the colours but the different fonts and big fat unnneccessary borders I cant. The design layout is just messy.

I really don't see what is wrong with the borders, wp is really only a text based website anyway. Text stretched across my 24" can be anoying when reading a lot of it. The big font is fine as well, considering it's not in general reading areas and suits the larger screens most of us have now.
Don't change the borders simon, stick with what you like.

I think the text on the bottom brown bar looks a little out of place, as in the columns are not even, eg. the lengths of them are odd.
If Connections was moved into the 3rd column it would be more even.. but it is probably with companies for a reason?
But it doesn't really make a scrap of difference either way..

I like Whirlpool's new look but you've actually continued the blue-orange paradigm, perhaps without realising it. Brown IS orange. It's just dark orange.

Aha nice find Stan. For some reason the forums at first felt a lot worse with brown, but I don't give a stuff now. It's like when you just get a hair cut...
So anyways, my main gripe is that I have a 24" lcd panel, and only got to use it for all of 1-2 weeks and then Whirlpool is made to look like crap on it. Given the amount of users here with 22" or above, i'd have thought it would be more user friendly for them!
I know it can be done with that WP Blue script or whatever it is, but I want to support Simon and keep this colour scheme! I just want my full page back again, the columns disturb me.
(Sorry if this has already been covered, etc etc, worth another mention anyways)

Agree with the maximum width comments. Although I don't run a resolution that puts the content to the left - I can use the zoom in IE7 to see their point.
Also, due to the increase in the width of the left hand sidebar, the rest of the content looks very cramped when running on my native 1024x768 resolution.

Brown is definetly back in. Just go and look at furniture, carpet etc . As far as interior design its back in , in a big way.
Just today I was looking at furnishing our new place. To be honest I am picking the browns, either WP has infiltrated my sub concious or everyone loves the brown colours!
Edit: fwiw the dark brown borders , cranked back a little would be good but meh its just pref.

Hi
I hope this hasn't been raised before - I couldn't find anything in a search.
Has anyone had any luck browsing with the new design on a Windows Mobile phone using Pocket IE? I've tried the different settings in the Preferences section and in Pocket IE's options, but it's still a lot more difficult than it was with the previous design, mainly because you have to scroll so far to get to various parts of the screen. Hopefully it's just because I'm missing something.
I was hoping to avoid installing Opera or another browser due to space, and I kind've suspect that won't make a lot of difference anyway.
I don't mind the new design when viewed on a PC, and don't care what the colours are, but not being able to browse easily on a mobile phone is a real bummer - it used to make the bus trip to work a lot more bearable :-)
Cheers

IMO, the standard mobile browsers that come with phones at the moment are quite primitive. I think the solution for now is to try the Opera Mobile browser if you have a Windows Mobile phone. ~vaio writes... It works reasonably well in Opera Mini.
+1. It looks great on Opera Mini. The only problem with Opera Mini is that it renders all web pages in a server in Norway.

Simon quoted my 6 year old post! I almost remember making it. I did get used to the colour changes made all those years ago.
I don't mind the brown and blue, it's not nearly as annoying as reading that I wrote "easy" instead of "easily" and not being able to edit it.

Absolutely!
You guys seriously need to do some research, Simon is right on:
"I'd go with a complementary colour. If the girls are in brown, the guy's vests could be duck-egg blue..."
au.answers.yahoo.com/ans...211195729AAOmxLd
---
"That’s why hunter green pants look great with a burgundy sweater. Blue is opposite of orange so gold, rust, and brown compliment shades of blue."
www.askandyaboutclothes....Coordination.htm
---
"One of the most common scenarios: You are wearing a navy blue shirt, jacket or suit. (Note to boys: Navy blue is a very dark shade of blue.) What color of shoes/belt is best? In my expert opinion, I would always go with brown. Black is just too close to navy blue ... too close for comfort."
media.www.utahstatesman....uys-887665.shtml
---
"Navy blue and brown shoes. But a dark taupe color and dark brown shoes would be tight!"
www.answerbag.com/q_view/93492

and that's just a few!

I really have to agree with this one simple comment. Beside, imho Brown isn't that bad... In 5 years time when Simon changes it to Burgundy, you'll wish it had stayed brown.
We need to concentrate on the layout, what's right, what's wrong with the layout.
Again, imho - keep at it Simon. Its looking good.

How do you have Whirlpool and the Opera Mini browser configured so that it works well?
For me, the text seems to all run into each other and it's hard to distinguish the thread titles from the poster's userids etc., particularly when looking at a page that just shows thread titles. Once you get to the threads themselves, it's not too bad though (still annoying that you have to scroll through the poster's userids, time posted etc.)
Also, just wondering how it looks on the full Opera Mobile browser - does anyone have that?
Thanks

Alternatively people could actually take some responsibility for the quality of their posts and make the effort to ensure their spelling is reasonably correct and if they aren't sure of a word then they could look it up.
Why they might even learn something when they look a word up.
Although the fact that Whirlpool already has a spell checker makes both our posts moot :p

A concept that is going to die with you and me and maybe Simon it seems.
I suspect I would argue that good spelling is necessary to prevent ambiguity but prima facie they don't struggle with that problem at all.
The dominant part of me asks why should words/syntax/idiom not obey Darwin? Clearly the users of it do.
PS. But it seems they get their syntax 100% correct when they program... so it proves they can.

I forgot to mention that I am running Opera Mini version 4.1 beta and have the text set to small.
I tried 4.0 and I didn't like the results, but I like how the page renders on 4.1
Edit: Also make sure that mobile view is not selected
Edit 2: I just noticed you had a Windows Mobile. I suggest waiting for Opera Mobile 9.5 beta (if it ever comes out by the sounds of things) before you commit to buying a copy of the browser.

Tweaks to new design so far
1: Thread warning header is now white instead of orange. (Very first tweak) 2: On any forum page: 'Reply's and 'Seen by' are now in different shades of brown according to status. 3: Orange above the Whirlpool logo in the sidebar has been removed. 4: Orange has been incorporated into the Whirlpool sidebar logo. 5: A small screen tweak has been enabled by Simon Wright* 6: There have been some font changes to the sidebar. 7: Font for links under your user name has been increased. 8: 'Private messenges' has become 'Whim private messages'. 9: A 'Log out' button has been added to the sidebar. It can be found under your username 10: Clicking on your time zone under your user name (Example: aest) takes you to your preferences page. 11: Log in Dialog now appears in the sidebar when not logged in. Formerly, there was a link re-directing you to the login page.... - Courtesy of 'no frills' for pointing this out to me 12: Search bar has been added at the bottom of the page. It is only relevant to the forum you are viewing. 13: 'Watched Threads' can now be found at the bottom of a thread. 14: 'Whim private messages' now sports the new look. 15: Whirlpool now has a new Favicon! If you can't see it, clear your cache =) 16: If you are subscribed to a thread, a orange 'Watching' message appears next to the top post reply button. 17: 'Watched Threads' page has been converted to the new design 18: Minor layout changes to the 'Optimise for smaller monitor' preference. 19: 'Thread search' has been updated to the new design
List is in order of happening.
I will keep this updated as the changes continue. I will try to post this on every 2nd or 3rd page. (Or as updates are released)
*This tweak removes the brown from either side of the screen, activate it as you did before the new design =)
If there are any other changes that you notice, please whim me!!
Thanks
Dayve =)

Has this been fixed yet so the Herring, Anchor, Reply to Post, etc., stuff is all on the left hand side under your name? It doesn't work for me and that's the way I've always had it.

I have a problem with Insert quote, which doesn't work in IE6 or FF2 when I'm at work, but is fine at home.
In the same combination, in the thread view, the list of page numbers for each thread is missing at work.
EDIT: A screenie of the second issue

Pardon my bluntness, but it looks like you're not taking your aesthetic cues from anyone! I've lived through the mission-brown of the 70's and it wasn't a good place. I have no desire to look at that terrible tastelessness any longer. Nor do I think serif fonts have any place in a serious forum site.
Whilst I recognise that you may have needed to fix a lot of other things on this site, the colour scheme certainly was not one of them. To be honest, everything on this site has worked perfectly for me ... until now.
I don't know why you are so intent on deliberately annoying so many users of this site when the solution seems so perfectly clear. Makes me wonder if you have been taking advice from Phil Burgess.....

Or if you are referring to this:
"5: A small screen tweak has been enabled by Simon Wright* ... *This tweak removes the brown from either side of the screen, activate it as you did before the new design =)"
You can set that by going to your Preferences and set "Optimise layout for" = Smaller monitor.

A concept that is going to die with you and me and maybe Simon it seems.
I suspect I would argue that good spelling is necessary to prevent ambiguity but prima facie they don't struggle with that problem at all. Unfortunately research argues against that point :) However someone putting effort into their posts instead of just rambling on makes it easier for them to convey complicated ideas to the rest of us , spelling is only one part of this.
The dominant part of me asks why should words/syntax/idiom not obey Darwin? Clearly the users of it do. I don't expect 100% correctness, but too much randomness in the environment can swamp out selection pressure. I'd be a fool to rally against language changing , I'll happily change with it providing people put effort into their communication , it's the people who don't put effort in that frustrate me. PS. But it seems they get their syntax 100% correct when they program... so it proves they can. The english language grammar is far more complicated than any programming languages grammar. It's actually very hard to intelligently parse english , it's got just enough structure to be difficult but not enough to be easy. Languages with very little structure or well defined structure are much easier to parse than english.

Check your browser settings, sounds like you have something turned off that should be on. The message at the bottom uses javascript to detect your browser. If that off or limited, you may see that message.
Just a guess, since there doesn't seem to be any other reason why.

Thank you captain obvious. The point is that this site would be nothing without its users. It would just be a mission brown blob in the vast ocean of cyber-space. I think Simon owes it to the people who support this site to make some effort at making it habitable. If this means multiple skin options in the preferences tab for the aesthetically challenged, then so be it. If you want to see a forum that has been tastefully constructed, have a look at this site. Visually it is much easier on the eye than this horrid admixture of umbrageous umber.

The only problem I really have with the brown is that, when you think about it, brown doesn't really fit in with a "whirlpool" theme. Colours that I associate with whirlpools are blues, greens, and white. Brown adds an unwelcome murkiness to the idea.
I think blue, green & white should be Whirlpool's colours.

Yes the colour scheme is different. I've already (almost) gotten over it. Things have been renamed and moved - a change is as good as a holiday and I bloody well need one of those...
I'm sure this has been said before, but because of the font choice, despite any <ctrl> + <+> or <-> (in FF), I can't get it to be very clear. It just constantly looks blurry. Not to mention the way the numbers jump up and down - can't stand fonts that do that. When I was in school, they taught us to write on a straight line and all numbers sat on top of the line.
But mainly, it's the blurriness of the font that needs fixing. Just the one on the left menu, the other fonts all seem to be fine. Apart from that, I don't mind what you've done to the place.

My first post back in part one was something along the lines of I'll get use to it.
After a couple days I would say that I have indeed gotten use to this new design and would just like to add some comments. Though I know many things won't change these are a few thoughts going through my head.
First has to be the brown. I actually don't mind it anymore and would have to agree with those for the colour change. Also I quite like the bigger font size in the side bar.
To be honest my mind is actually a bit hazy when trying to remember the old style........ but I'm not big a fan on the watched threads page. For some reason it looks crowded. Don't ask why.
Speaking of watched threads the Stop It! got a bit of a chuckle out of me and I like how it stands out.
The footer I don't use but don't really mind it.
I was really against the new look of the users profile page....... now it doesn't look so bad. Still prefer the old style.
Lastly I'll add another vote to bring back a straight Whim :D
Other than that good job!

+1 from me too. I think it's the larger sizes as well as lacking that space. I miss the old mark as read for when it's only 1 watched thread, but I guess going from 1 click to 2 is called improvement (then Vista must be the peak of evolution when it comes to clicking things to do what you want...) Fischer writes... Stop It!
Never seen this... I just get the standard 'stop watching' or whatever.
And no, it's not anti-aliasing. I've checked it on different video cards, one of them a 6600GT. Looks the same on each one, I think it's the font is just not as clear as, say, arial or courier or something standard.
