I figured that I'm better off posting the speed test data for the Vodafone wireless account (currently $39/month for 5GB) here than cluttering up the main Voda thread. Guess it helps everyone (new and old to Voda's wireless plan) if you could post your location when posting your speed. Here I go..

This has pretty much been consistent for me for the last 2 days. 2/5 bars of HSDPA reception. Since it's an image, would Vodafone's compression features take effect and therefore provide faster speeds? If anything, the 3MB one would be more accurate than the 600k one. That I would say is pretty decent. Problem is though, you're probably the only one on the tower at that time! Vodafone should make a note of the service that people are getting and start improving their services.

Just had a pretty nasty drop out, right in the middle of doing a uni quiz. Had to restart the laptop without success from reconnecting with VMC or e620 software. I don't think continuous service is in line with speed.

I've received very different results from two different tests done within 1 minute of each other in Melbourne (3047).
I was directed to speedtest.net by Vodafone with the following results:
download 1531 kbps, upload 309kbps.
Which was lovely really.
Then I tried ozspeedtest.com (600 and 3MB tests) which showed download speed consistently around 100 kbps.
I then tried speedtest.net again with marginally slower speeds than the first result, but still a massive difference between the two services. Any idea why?

With ozspeedtest.com, are you sure it was 100kbps and not 100kb/s? I've just tried speedtest.net and it looks extremely cool, but I doubt the results are accurate. Pretty sure I'm not receiving 1067kbps download connection.
EDIT: I might be wrong.. although I did this test a while after the speedtest.net one. Best result yet. Best possible reception in my house and it's off-peak as well. Test Results from Oz Broadband Speed Test ---------------------------------- Test run on 20/03/2008 @ 12:12 AM

The problem here is the results given on speedtest.net are misleading because they display the results as "Download xxxx kb/s" when in fact they are displaying the line speed. They give the line speed as "kb/s" when it should really be stated as kbps (kilobits per second) or Mbps (megabits per second).
Results on Oz Broadband Speed Test: Your line speed is 1.07 Mbps (1069 kbps). Your download speed is 134 KB/s (0.13 MB/s).
Results on speedtest.net Download 1061 kb/s (but they really mean line speed 1061 kbps)
So you can see the results are almost identical between the 2 sites. Download speed should be stated as KB/s (kilobytes per second) to avoid confusion, and more importantly because it is correct.
8 bits = 1 byte so dividing your line speed by 8 will give your theoretical download speed e.g., 1069kbps/8=133.6KB/s which fits the above test results.

Yeah I know what the results from speedtest.net meant. Just well, getting 1mbps (around 100kb/s download) speeds seemed unrealistic for me considering my normal download speeds.

EDIT: Would the 3MB picture be affected by caching by the browser, and therefore allow faster results? It's faster than actual as is already since it's being compressed by VMC.

just like city traffic, stop start then u finally get there after 4 hours... still cant understand why vodafone is advertising their plans at such low prices when they cant seem to get it together???
the bigger a company gets the more cunning they get! shame on you vodafone! advertise 600 - 1.4mb... this is what i get tonight... ever since that flick of a switch in february to fix the high latency issue, you guys have reduced the speeds... so theres no balancing, either high latency high speed or no speed and no latency.. and im not on GPRS, im on HSDPA connection with 3 bars

2/5 bars HSDPA. The only reason I can say that I get these speeds is probably noone uses Vodafone's 3G around here. Mobile phone users wouldn't need that much bandwidth and I would think most people around here use ADSL instead. Haven't had so many dropouts yesterday and today, but it still has it's periods of non-action.

My Shellharbour 2529 GPRS beats yeasterday's 100% improvement from 1KB/s to 2KB/s by another 50% to 3KB/s, very, very disappointed.
I believed that dialup should be in a vicinity of 56KB/s, even my line speed is less than half of that.

You should (if their rollout goes to plan anyway) have 3G well before that

I so agree..... I've only been with Vodafone for 2 1/2 weeks and since day 1 service has continually gone DOWN hill. It was great first few days but now its so slow.
Im on the Gold Coast (known congested area) and of course only found this out after I signed up. What i hate is how they are still signing people up on the coast even though current customers are not getting what they are paying for!
Im trying to work to out what I can about my contract. Anyone know how i should go about it? I just dont want to be paying $39 a month for service WORSE than my original $9 a month unlimited dial up serivce.
Would post a speed test but 10 minutes later it still has not loaded (70kb test!). So assume it is at 0kb/s........*aargh*

I don't see why it would be reasonable to have one place achieving high speeds and another getting barely dialup speeds in built-up metropolitan areas. Fairfield doesn't have any substantial tall buildings or terrain obstructions, so I would probably blame it on lack of towers (i.e coverage) outright. They need to take a look at this right away. Cabramatta not working as well is pretty shameful.

I've given the modem a go in Cabramatta NSW and the speeds are substantially slower than what I get around here at home. I haven't tried the modem in Fairfield yet but I'm assuming it's the same from the results of others, since they are neighbouring areas.

How much slower, as you know speeds can vary even at the same location depending on time of day etc, have you run tests at multiple times at Cabramatta and the average is lower or just when you tried it?

I guess it wasn't during peak-hour so I wouldn't really know the full extent of it. I tried it 3 times during an hour or so and got downloads of around (edit: 20kb/s actually, peaking at 30kb/s once). Being off-peak, I would've expected faster speeds. If I do take my laptop and modem back there again, I'll post some speeds. Have to say that I didn't experience any GPRS while I was there though, so that's sort of a plus. About location as well, this was done near the shopping district, so I'd assume the best coverage possible. Moving further out, I would really believe dialup speeds on '3G reception' hold true.

at 10am thats not good enough, i used to get around 1.5mb when i first signed up. and i havent moved the location of my modem. Any of you people had any luck with 3? im this close to telling vodafone to shove it...
i was just showing my mate something online and the whole thing just timed out, i had to disconnect and reconnect, wait another 5 minutes before it started going again... it acts like an old heart.. beats a bit then stops then starts again... attrocious
does anyone else get time outs? or periods where nothing happens? it just stalls and then it starts back up again a few mins later? i think thats the reason the speeds are showing real slow. when we run the tests the timer keeps counting, even when theres nothing being transferred, then when it starts working again it loads the page... but after a delay of x seconds of inactivity...

It's generally taken that the Optusnet one is the most 'accurate' one. If anything it's better off using that mirror to keep things constant in terms of sharing results.

I've been using it day in, day out at Cabramatta Rail, and I can assure you, it runs like crap at that location. AFAICT Fairfield is using the same tower.
Guildford and Liverpool are fine, so it just happens to be isolated to the area I'm currently working in *grumble*

Have you tried it near the big carpark at Cabramatta? I managed to get some better speeds close to there (units opposite). It might've been a once-off period though, and it was off-peak.

No. I've only tried it at the railway station in the control room and platform 1/2 booking offices. Doesn't help me much if it works anywhere else.

Punchbowl, NSW 2196 I can't help it but keep doing this speed test. Probably taken close to 100mb worth of it!
I would really attribute my speeds to the fact that most people around here would have dedicated line broadband, such as cable and ADSL, so Vodafone's towers wouldn't be to full capacity. Test Results from Oz Broadband Speed Test ---------------------------------- Test run on 24/03/2008 @ 08:29 PM
Mirror: OptusNet Data: 3 MB Test Time: 31.96 secs
Your line speed is 766 kbps (0.77 Mbps). Your download speed is 96 KB/s (0.09 MB/s).
EDIT: Dropped out once so far, after around 5 min. Let's see how they go tonight.

UniGraduate writes... Im trying to work to out what I can about my contract. Anyone know how i should go about it?
Regardless of T&C bull$^it in your contract your supplier has an obligation to provide a reasonable service, end of story.
Go see your local V/f dealer and tell them it is not acceptable "use the word.... unusable..." and you want out of the contract. If using a lappy I would take that with me and say, here ... try it yourself. You will not be the first to do it I assure you.
If they refuse (unlkely) I would stop payment and put the details why in writing to Vf.. they may threaten, but would not be able to do anything because they are not supplying the service you are paying for.. no contest.

Sorry to hear you some of you are getting slow connections.
Mine has honestly been great since day 1. Used in the following areas regularly.
Engadine, Parramatta, Bankstown, Hills district.
Also used extensively in rural areas on GPRS and still getting very usable speeds at all times...
This is 5 mins ago in parramatta.
