It will cost a lot for installation.. and you have to make sure your nearby the Amcom fibre network. Keep in mind you'd have to subscribe to a business plan.. several hundred dollars a month.

The main thing is - Fibre Optic is really a business grade product. It comes with service level agreements, account managers, etc. It is not geared to home users.

I think the minimum cost per month for unlimitted 2Mbps / 2Mbps fibre would be about $500, plus installation is very expensive. Bear in mind that you are unlikely to get the full 2Mbps, as I assume Amcom would have some sort of contention ratios.

Your best bet really is ADSL. Cheap, reasonably reliable, and faster than entry level fibre - at least in terms of burst speed.

You get full 2Mbps.

There is a contention ratio, but normally that would only bite if the links were saturated.
Cost is just under $500 a month I believe, but you will also wear the cost of:
Fibre run to house
Media converter

Which will be $1000's generally.

Not if fibre runs down my side of the street, on the route from TUTT to Mirrabooka Police, and I have spare fibre converters from replacing dlink and smc with nice integrated fibre WICs :P Hmm...

Now to get it past the financial ball and chain{thwok}..., little lady{thwok}...., dearest wife{thwok}...

Maybe not.

Hi Matthew,

Are we allowed to dream of when it is ;). From the tone of your post I doubt any time in the foreseeable future, but maybe oneday FTTH will be a reality...

The $1000's referred to running fibre to a premises, not the actual cost.

What data allowance do you have? If it's similar to our plan, you would be paying multiple 1000's.

And if the tenants agreed, the body corporate could maybe arrange something. Amcom POP in the basement, with a router owned by the Body Corp and Ethernet cabling to each unit.

Perhaps it could be do-able?

Hello Stan,

1:1 at $500 per month, you would more then likely only get 2Mbit/s.

For a 1:1 100Mbit link dedicated you would be look at around $25k to $30k per month just for the internet bandwidth, this of course is dedicated 1:1. This would not include the cost of delivering the actual data to the required premesis.

More then likely you are on a Pay-As-You-Go plan - cost per GByte or on a oversubscribed 8:1 product.

Regards,

- Matthew Murray

What about fibre to the apartment/townhouse with a mini DSLAM?

Your copper run should be less that 100 metres so you should get fill speed on DSL2+.

Much cheaper installation/setup costs - uses existing copper in the building and no need to run cat 5/5e/6 from 'pop' to individual appartments.

Would use your standard ADSL 2+ router instead of having to buy a new device.

Any one live in a large apartment complex with has Amcom Fibre near by?

Stan:

1) the Midland fibre wasn't quite that cheap
2) the POP location would have altered pricing
3) iiNet's Symantec servers (plural) trumps your Symantec box ;)
4) Amnet offered your boss fibre to his house. It still wasn't that cheap :P

I never used the 100mbps link in Midland, I wasnt based in that office, but the other tech's loved the 100mbps link :P 600mb cd's in 1min 30sec they reackon.

I'd say the monthly cost is like $500 per month before any traffic.

All I can say, the 30mbps fibre feels about 100 times faster, and alot harder to saturate than the 4 x 24mbps naked dsl lines we had. The dsl was crap really compaired to the fibre.

Dont you think you should be more careful about what you say in a public forum?

I would love to 'brag' about all the cool toys I have but am unable to give out confidential information which could possibly give an outsider knowledge of our network.

which boss? there's 3 (maybe 4) of them

I would say 4 - MF, SW, SC and TB.

Physically it is not so easy. But giving information away is just as bad. Some one may know of a vulnerability in something you mention and take advantage of it.
