-rebtel : 9.5 cents/m to VN or with bonus double recharge its mean 4.8cents/m landline or mobile
- Tpad : 7-10cents/m
-nonoh.net : 4.8 cents/m mobile

or mobile rate at Telediscount

10.5c/min is a pretty major achievement, especially with per second billing. I really am amazed how they get this deal to happen.

I currently use a Neosaver on MNF, but the difference (15c/min vs 10.5c/min) means that I'll set up my dialplans to now only use Pennytel for mobile calls - and MNF for the others.

Good going, Pennytel!

had a play with rebel, (free 10 minute call) i presume i still pay for the first leg of the call to the 8807 XXXX number via my normal mobile billing (voda) ??

so that 10 min call just cost me vodafone`s mobile rates per min plus the flag fall??

just had a dumb attack..... of course i pay for that leg, it`s the other overseas leg thats the saving, pay for local rates but call at the reduced (rebtel) rates

Are you suggesting that Pennytel is greedy?

Maybe you should change ISP to one that is less greedy and more suits your needs.

I think Pennytel rates in general are unbelievably cheap and the quality and reliablity are great (no, not perfect).

Come on .... surely zebra-dell is suggesting self greed.

The 28.88 cent mobile calls was a great choice, but the 10.5 cent timed is also a cool thing. Anywhere cheaper? ... I wouldn't think so.
(Maybe metal washers in the public phone box slot? ... Oh, that probably doesn't work these days)?

Go PT!!!

I am very pleased with the new mobile rate, as the Christmas mobile special was useless to me and to the dozens of people I've put on to PennyTel.

Our average call length is 90 seconds or less, so the timed plan and the new mobile rate is a winner.

However I hope PennyTel can keep up the call quality and improve the sometimes woeful post-dial delay. I'd prefer the price to have remained unchanged and the standard of service improve, if the reduction will mean a falling off in quality.

It has improved recently, hasn't it?
I mean, since the problems of a couple of months ago, don't PT users in general have very good quality now ... perhaps better than pre December?

Was 13 cents pm on Free Access Timed Plan and the Free Access Untimed Plan, and 12.78 cents pm on the Untimed Plan.

Here www.pennytel.com/call_plans_compare.html it currently says (in black) Australia Mobile 12.78c on the Untimed Plan ... that's now incorrect.

considering most carriers charge more than 10.5c a mintue for landlines it's a great price.

i think it's cause there was a recent reduction in the fee the mobile carriers can charge each other.

it's still rather high. no idea why mobile rates have to be so high in Australia. Dun get me started on the cost of an SMS :D

No - I just tested a send to my Vodafone mobile and I received it about a minute later, and it also shows as 'Success' on the SMS history page.

Although, 2 SMS' I sent 9 days ago still show as 'Pending' even though I received them.

Thought the SMS service now seems more reliable than ever, I've also noticed that a couple of messages I've sent over the last 24 hours are still classified as 'pending'. I'm not totally sure of the networks the intended recipients are using but was disappointed to see that the SMS system still has a couple of kinks in it. Having said that, I can't really complain given that the service is still free. :)

Certainly there has been a huge improvement and there had to be, considering the threads late last year containing numerous people defecting to other VSPs.

I've been using PennyTel since 2005 and wish them every success, however things are not as consistently good as they once were. My major problem recently is variable and sometimes quite long post-dial delay. This may be a consequence of PennyTel's growth outstripping their facilities; I really don't know the cause but a post-dial delay greater than a few seconds is the same as no service to non-technical users. They just hang up and say that VoIP is unreliable.

In my experience with non-technical users, a short post-dial delay is just as important as a good quality connection. PennyTel need to remain focused on these core issues before wasting time and money on things like SMS which are available elsewhere.

Jeffrey O'Neill writes...

a recent reduction in the fee the mobile carriers can charge each other

Do you have a source for this? As you're likely aware, mobile termination is a declared service and mobile carriers are only obliged to negotiate wholesale prices somewhere near the ACCC "indicative price".

There aren't global step changes in price like there have been for retail PSTN (offset by Telstra's line rentals, of course). Moreover, retail mobile prices aren't regulated - so VSPs can charge whatever they like above the indicative price; eg MNF and engin 27c.

Apparently the ACCC determined that mobile termination should wholesale for 9c between July 07 and Dec 08. That doesn't seem to explain Pennytel's latest price drop.

Someone suggested that Pennytel is buying minutes in USD. But surely their international suppliers (if that's how it works) are ultimately paying Optus and Telstra in AUD, and they aren't in the business of making forex losses.

An interesting wrinkle is that lower mobile termination charges are favourable to Telstra, unless and until mobile undermines PSTN. PSTN termination wholesales for only 1c per minute... which by the way is IMO why VoIP can be obscenely profitable for VSPs who charge $10 access fees and 10c flat tariffs for calls to PSTN.

Hahah...not only does it probably no longer work, but as ive recently bought some washers from bunnings, about 20c sized ones, i can advise they are about 8c each..so if the phone booth was tricked into accepting washers, for a 1 min call id figure you would need at least 15 washers @ 8c = $1.20 worth of washers....

So yeah PT, just marginally cheaper! ;-)

Way to go PT !!

I just read that the "Free Access Untimed Plan" includes 8c untimed calls to Australia*, China, Singapore, United Kingdom* and United States/Canada.

Are calls to both landlines and mobiles untimed and just cost 8c?

Yeah, China, Singapore, US & Canada, mobile owners are charged for receiving incoming calls, so calling them (usually) costs the same as a landline.

hmmm, looking at the plan compare page i notice that this new plan doesn't have the 50 free calls, fair enough.

but no swap feature? that's a bit surprising, didn't think it'd be a big deal since you can just sign up a new free timed account with them anyway.

and then the big one - no multiple outgoing calls - the only plan to have this limitation. not happy about that pennytel.

any chance of this plan having multiple outgoing calls in future?

i don't want to explain to my household how "sometimes you can use the other line, sometimes you can't....it depends what sort of call the other person is already on, and what call your going to try and make. if it doesn't work, you'll need to press this first...." urgh.

Good work, PT!

Questions:
1) How does the 50 free sms charging work with the 'Talk till you Drop' plan? Do you charge us first then credit back the following month?
2) I guess you intend to update your banner jpg on your home page, and the call plan page (www.pennytel.com/call_plans.html) to reflect the new changes soon, to avoid confusion?

Cheers,

I got Some Question up here It seems i never get any reply in support section of pennytel on the web nor on phone-777.. (and i am a loyal customer of pennytel for last 9 month with a average monthly spend of $35+ and that really wonder me about there support standard) so here you go whirlpool@everyone and to mark@pennytel..

1) Is the plan swappable like if i make a short call of 1-2 min can i turned the untimed plan off and for long call turn on the talk till you drop plan for 38.88 cnt call??

2) is free sms included worldwide or au only?? coz before i was in untimed plan i could send sms to au mobile for free but i couldn't send any sms to other country it always say pending and never get delivered..

3) if i don't like the plan for some reason can i revert back to the previous plan from this new one??

4) i have 2 account with pennyttel can i use same credit card for recharging both of the account...coz my second account doesn't went through validation yet pennytel still didn't deposit any money at my account..so i cant validate.. is there any restriction regarding this..

thanks

I would love to see Macedonia (Mobile) added to the plan.

I've just contacted www.gotalk.com.au and cancelled my unlimited plan with them as I wasn't making enough calls to justify (goVoIP Aussie Pack - $14.95 per month & goVoIP World Pack - from $9.95 per month).

There's often times we conference people in to make a three way call and i believe that needs the multiple call feature enabled...

TALK TILL YOU DROP PLAN

Strange as it may seem, this new TTYD plan will probably mean I'll run down my credit, cancel my "Over 20 countries Untimed Plan" account and go and join the MyNetFone NeoSaver plan.

Why?, I hear you ask. Well, this post pretty well sums it up -
forum-replies.cfm?t=673937&p=2#r37 as the 50 free call countries list has not expanded as Jocelyn@PennyTel indicated it might. Three weeks ago we were told "we might have good news for you and all Thailand callers soon" and I've been waiting for an announcement but it appears it may not be coming now as the TTYD plan has been announced instead :((

Well, you'll pay 10c untimed to Thailand on MNF on the Neosaver and 8c untimed on Pennytel TTYD. Both include Thai mobiles and both are $4.95 a month. You do get the 60 global calls on MNF though.

P.S. Callers to Indonesia should be excited - 8c untimed on TTYD to selected destinations.

I'm paying 20c untimed with $9.95 World Saver add-on with GoTalk...might have to let that part of the plan drop. We'll do some back to back comparisons on quality first though.

Exactly my point. I dial very few local calls. My wife dials many Thai calls, so a lot (or all) will be included in the 60 global calls.

This is very strange.

I changed plans, I was billed AGAIN for the $5 monthly fee (after being being billed a few days ago for the previous plan) and my account balance changed to -$6.48, then an auto-recharge of $10 went through and now it's +$3.48... what on earth is going on here. not happy. :/

hmmm, looking at the plan compare page i notice that this new plan doesn't have the 50 free calls, fair enough.

No free 50 calls for the 'talk till you drop' plan. And $0 .3888 per call for Aus mobiles. Good for someone who calls mobiles a lot for long time but most of my calls are under 2-3 minutes.

You don't like it, don't use it? Find a better untimed Australian mobile rate?
$5 per month fully justifies Australian mobile calls on there own, if it does'nt use the timed rate...If 10.5c per minute (per second billing) is too much...well...

I think this is an exceptional offer on PennyTels part - well done!!

I had a feeling they were bringing out a new plan by this statement:

markd@Pennytel writes...

Australia Mobile rate will be 10.5cents per minute* (per second billing)....

*Rate applicable to any plan where Australia mobile is TIMED.

Being there were no plan with mobile rates untimed - this seemed a little sus!?

Not that I would of been the only one thinking this...

Again, good work PennyTel very happy :) :) :) :)

100 calls with PennyTel will be $38.88
100 calls with GoTalk will be $14.95 (up to 300 minutes, 5 hours)

EDIT: I'm refering to mobile only calls. Tha advantage of the GoTalk plan is that you have an addational 300 POTS calls on top of the 100 mobile calls.

100 calls with PennyTel will be $38.88
100 calls with GoTalk will be $14.95 (up to 300 minutes, 5 hours)

That works out to be 100 calls at 3 minutes each.

PennyTel:

Monthly fee: $5
25 mobile calls; 2 hours each: $9.72

Total 50 hours for $14.72

Hi Teabags,

With the new Plan you can get AUS Mobile at 38.88cents and if you like to take the benfits of the per minute rate then you can take advantage of this on our other timed plan.

Thanks AAAAA for the suggestion,

Based on the numerous feedbacks, PennyTel's Management and Rate Analysis Team tried their very best to accomodate the numerous requests and suggestion that were put forward based on the Promo Plan.

The new plan was designed in such a manner that we would be able to satisfy the various requirements from our broad range of customers.

We have added a lot more destinations to both the 8cents and the 38.88cents category, while also lowering the rate for Australia Mobile to 10.5cents per minute billed in 1 second increment - if I am not mistaken then this can be considered as one of the cheapest rates currently available for Australia Mobile.

We also like to highlight that even after our benefits such as the 50 free calls etc, our per minute rates still tend to be one of the cheapest when compared to the current market.

We believe in what you see is what you pay and unlike other VSP's we do not tend to charge higher rates once the customers have used their monthly benefits.

All our Plans are here to stay for the benefits for our Customers

Hi Jocelyn, Are you telling me that under the TTYD plan the calls are charged 10.5cents per minute billed in 1 second increment ? So if I make a call for 2 or 3 seconds (missed call) I will only be charged for the 2 or 3 seconds and not the 38.88 seconds? .... and a short 2 minute call is 21 cents?

Before on the 28,88 cents for untimed Aus mobile (trial TTYD plan) was available on the $10 deposit plan and the $5 included calls plan; now the call is only for the TTYD plan which carries a $5 charge (no calls included) and 38.88 cents. So, how can this be an improvement for the customers? Did the customers actually asked for this type of plan ??
