Does anyone know if the Telstra Turbo Modem will work on the Optus 2100 meg 3g network.

I am currently using this modem with the supplied Next G sim and it works really well but as this is a work supplied account I need to find a alternative for private use that doesnt cost a fortune.

It seems as though the customer hardware that is supplied with Optus, VBB and VF gives lots of problems. In contrast the Turbo Modem hasnt missed a beat. Suppose I am now spoiled with the QOS and reliability of Next G device and I was hoping just to get Optus SIM (2100meg) swap the SIMS as required.

Any Ideas
Dave

Telstra modems are locked to the Telstra network. You can for a small fee get it unlocked if it's a Telstra branded product (not a BigPond one).
Only when it's unlocked can you use other network SIM's, oh and yes it is UMTS 2100 capable.

you can get a telstra pre paid sim then take it to a telstra shop upgrade to a nextg sim then buy pre paid data packs its not cheap but it doesn't lock you into a contract and you only buy data as you need it

You can say that again... $29 = 80 Megabytes to be used within 30 days. (there are other plans)

That's why I've now ordered a vodafone 5GB for $39 a month deal, and on the sideline still have my telstra turbo modem when there is just GPRS *shivers* available with a prepaid SIM to purchase data packs.

Its not just the device at your end that provides "reliablity" of service, its the network provisioning as well.

Just taking a Next G device to another network won't necessarily give you different reliability results than other users of those networks experience with their devices!

Very true about the quality of the network provider. I will try and get the Turbo Modem unlocked so I can use it on other networks. At least if there is troubles with out Wirless ISP's, I can rule out the modem as a cause.

From what I have previously read that if I supply my own modem then I can get a month by month account which means that I can easily bail out if the Optus/Voda service is indeed crap.

Also only have to carry one modem around with two sim cards. I mainly use the 3g service with my eee pc so I dont want to much bulk to lug around.

I have been routinely testing the Tamworth area for Optus 2100meg 3g service. My work phone is a ZTE165 and I have been doing manual network scans (ensuring the phone is set to auto band) and alas NO Optus 3g yet.

Good news about the Telstra modems. I have a blue bigpond modem and updated it with the latest software and now my modem is not locked I am currently using this on my three sim card and it is working very quick. Also I have placed my virgin sim card inside my modem and it also works very good.

Before I upgraded the software my modem would not allow any sim card to be used other than the Telstra card.

Sorry - Slightly OT but:

Please indicate Version of Software, Driver and Firmware......

I tried a Three SIM in my BP3-EXT with no success (after setting the APN etc).
