I was thinking to myself theres got to be quite a few metallica fans on WP no? Anyway feel free to talk about anything regarding metallicas ninth studio album and if you think they will come to australia any time soon!

By the way, two new songs have been performed already live: Death is not the end (the new song) - Vulturous (the other new song) i will post some youtube links later on.

There is still alot of rumour that both these songs you have mentioned will not be on the final album.

How are those songs? If it's anything like the last album, I'll be deeply disappointed. Metallica have amazing songwriting talent (think Four Horsemen and Master of Puppets) and they let it go to waste on that excuse of an album.

Edit: Spelling. :)

I've heard their new songs and I don't like them. That said the quality is pretty dodgy, however I really think they need to go back to their Puppet's/Lightning/Justice days and write something influenced by that.

Looking forward to it and refuse to judge it before it's actually released like so many will do in this thread based on previous poor albums. It has three things in it's favour =

-1 Bob Rock
+1 Rick Rubin

I don't know...

I have kind of given up on Metallica to be quite honest. All their albums up to Load have been great and since then their music has been pathetic.

Ultimately this means (I think), their new album isn't going to be anything special.
I couldn't imagine Metallica coming back and making another Puppets. It ain't going to happen. The balls are what made them great, compare 1989 concerts to their more recent ones and the difference is amazing.

Bob was a bad idea. Black album was alright, other than that he sucked. Their new producer.. not too sure about him but I guess time will tell. I don't really like Robert either to be honest, I liked Jason more.

minbari73 writes...

Yeah, I said the same thing about Reload and St.Anger.

I hope you're right and it ends up being good, really I do. But I don't see it happening.

Prove me wrong Metallica!

Just wondering.. how many people would go to a metallica concert if they announced one in aus somewhere? (hypothetical)

i know i certainly would, even for the $200 ish ticket cost becuase it would be something i would remember for the rest of my life and tell the story to my grandchildren.

For me unlikely.

Saw them with the Berlin Symphonika in Berlin and also at the Big Day Out in Milton Keynes. Was good but like most people say anything past the Black Album is a waste of time.

If they annouced a tour that was playing ...and justice for all from start to finish. Now that's a concert I'd like to see.

I've seen them before and probably wouldn't pay to see them again. Maybe if it was sub $100 for a ticket I might consider it. But with the huge array of great metal talent coming to Australia now, I'd prefer to put my money into seeing them.

I'm looking forward to a new Metallica album, but it's been in the pipe line for so long now, I'd almost say they've given up on it :)

i'd definately go to metallica concert. They play their old stuff live anyway, so its not like the "90s+ metallica sux mannnnnn" dudes can use that excuse as they play all the old classics.

I dont think the youtube clips will be on new album, i certainly hope not, theres a few old school riff sections but the singing is woeful.

I used to be a huge metallica fan, I spent hours upon hours downloading guitar tabs and learning their songs.

But ever since Relode, I really haven't liked them at all. My Favourite albums were Lightening, Justice and Black, there newer stuff didn't agree with the direction of music I was taking at the time and I moved on to other bands.

Was a massive Metallica fan, through the late 80s and early 90s. Still am, really! I think since Black, Metallica have been hard rock rather than metal, but I'm one of the few old school Metallica fans (I suspect) that actually isn't that much into metal. It's unwritten law for Metallica fans not to admit to liking the Black album, but I think its their second best effort after Lightning, maybe third best after Puppets.

I can't wait for the new album. I really wanted to love St Anger but I just didn't. I'll go buy the new album without hearing a song off it, in order to give it a go. What's the latest release date?

Same here. loved everything up to ...and justice for all. Black was alright but the moment that Lars stopped using the double kick drum, i knew something was wrong. (he used it what once or twice on the black album?). I didn't even bother looking at the St Anger album...yucks. How could a band so friggin good produce something so friggin bad. :(

Amen. At least someone who thinks for himself.

I have vowed not to go in Metallica discussion a time ago, but I shall say only this. As musicians, it is normal to want to reinvent yourself and do something different than what you've done in the past (I would even generalize that more to people in general). It's healthy. From their point of view, the four first albums have been made, are listened to and performed live, and will continue to do so for times to come... So, I imagine it's just much more challenging to invent something new, even if fans may not like it because it's not the same as before.

I salute them for what they've accomplished, and for being so flapping cool people on stage.

edit: hey, swearing gets automatically censored... cool, and at the same time worrisome

Wow, if their songs are mainly like in that video footage on missionmetallica.com , I am impressed. Pretty catchy, and what's that I hear, some solos! That is the main thing that was lacking on St. Anger, well apart from a decent sounding production.

From the snippets on offer, i've heard guitars tuned to a standard more suited to Metallica, a guitar solo, a well tuned snare drum WITH the snare attached... add to that an overall well produced kit sound. And finally vocal lines that don't exactly make you cringe.

Yeah, a definite repeat of St. Anger.

Yeah I'll wait til I hear a signature track but so far sounds promising. I know we'll never see another Master of Puppets from Metallica, but it looks like they've moved well away from mainstream rock and have added a bit of edge back to their sound.

I never quite understood that myself. The Black album was one of the albums that helped me discover metal and let's face it, the songs were good - I got tired of Nothing Else Matters pretty quick due to commercial overplay but I loved the bitterness of the other slow song, Unforgiven - and if you don't like the riffs in the God that Failed, you're either lying or there's something wrong with you, in my not so humble opinion.

I think it's just a general sentiment of the 'masses' having discovered Metallica through the Black Album, and hence the 'hardcore' fans don't feel special anymore.

I think something similar can be perceived with bands as Korn, Limp Bizkit, Disturbed, Mudvayne etc... These bands' first albums were considered underground and outside the 'mainstream appreciation', so that it was cool and ok to listen to them and like them. Once they got a bit more famous, making pretty much the same music only produced better, it suddenly became juvenile testosterone-driven crap, because of all the young people taking it on as well.

I think that's lame. Stick with what you like, be it metal or otherwise. I love the Rihanna song 'Please don't stop the music', and don't give a rat's ass of what people think of that, and I will still shake my ass to the dance floor, no matter how many fans have the album. I would just like to see what would happen when Opeth or Nevermore would suddenly strike the big masses...

I've read a few interviews here and there from Lars and others and the general jist is that Metallica are trying to go back to pre-black album times, like standard tuning, putting snare back on, epic solos from Kirk, etc.

The latest was that the album is due out in September.

It will be very very interesting to see what it's like as they will have to mix their old school instrumental with James' inability to sing the same way he did back then.

I think any producer would outdo Bob Rock since he was so shit at his job. But Rick Rubin isn't all that he's hyped up to be, he's the one who has pioneered the term "executive producer." Meaning he really doesn't get involved with the engineering as such, he lets the band write the songs and does all his shit at the end. He has been involved with some good albums, don't get me wrong. But don't know if that's good or bad, but I think a good producer should stick around from start to finish of the recording process.

just telling it as it is. I was a MASSIVE fan in the 80's back when others of my age group were listening to Bros and New Kids on The Block. I owned every album up to "And justice" at age 13 which was quite a feat for somebody who didn't work. I had to save lots of money, which I only earned from my parents by doing jobs, to buy those albums.

As the years went by and they brought out stuff that was below par I gave up. As I said Reload was the last straw. St anger was rubbish....and I believe Metallica are a bunch of old guys who have lost their passion for music, the whole reason they made such great albums as Ride The lightning and Master Of puppets.

This is not meant to flame BTW....sorry u took it that way.

Music is my religion frankly and by that metaphor it is safe to say that I am a fundamentalist lol I really am living example of a "fanatic". Metallica were at one point the head of my panthion of gods. I got into them when reload came out, I bought it, then bought Ride the Lightning the next day. I was like WOW this is like two completely different bands. I loved them for ages I loved the new stuff I adored the old stuff it was like I was in the best position because all the purist were losing "their band" yet I got into them through their new stuff, so I had more music to be blessed with to enjoy as far as I was concearned. while people around me dropped off from Reload, Garage Inc and S&M I enjoyed every minuet of it, I even held true when Lars sued Napster. And then...St Anger came out. The moment when I was closest to admitting defeat. It's an album of demo's as far as I am concearned, nothing more. However, Some Kind of Monster was awesome and though my fellow deciple Andrew thought that seeing them as human beings was the final blow for him, I loved that I got an opportunity to see them up close. When they came to Brisbame for the concert it was sex in a stadium lol AUDIO ORGASM lol...but over time I have since moved on to other bands and Led Zeppelin has now taken the thrown, but even now I sometimes pull out some 'tellica when me and the boys are having a party and we sit around ans go "Remember that time when we were 15 and we got totally waisted and listened to One in the dark on your mad stereo, man those were the days"

Nice post.

Unfortunately that's how most people seem to remember Metallica......with a sad reflection of times gone by, not a longing or an eagerness for the road yet to be travelled.

It seems an unfortunate navigation error was made by the band. They took a turn at a fork in the road which very few are willing to follow.

There's a fair amount of people reminiscing in a similar manner times they'd hung black people from trees. Sometimes it's better to move on.

I don't like categorising music but what I just heard from the new snippet sounds close to trash metal than what you would actually call metal. I'm not a big fan of trash metal. Trash metal is generic and lazy metal.

They're trying to use 'Kill 'Em All' as a template instead of 'Muppets.' Nice try Metalli$a.

What the? How can u compare a LOT of fans not liking the current Metallica as they are with rape and murder of African Americans?

That's just wrong mate.

A trepid attempt at morbid humour. Wrong forum apparently.

My point being that the sentiment of what the masses in general think were better times, isn't necessarily shared by those who are in the middle of it.

While I reckon they are great players, they seem to write crappy songs.
I think I have about four albums but only listen to about two songs out of the lot.

Alot of people don't like Metallicas latest stuff and have moved on to other bands. There is alot of other music out there - better then Metallicas latest efforts. But there albums from the 80's are bliss and no other metal band in my view has surpassed the greatness they had.

Huh, I'm quite impressed by the 'new' sound. It's almost old school, not that crisp metal sound from Justice...also, Hetfield's lyrics are starting to get on my nerves a bit. I love James, and appreciate what he's given to entertain us, but he just can't stop pouring out these self loathing lyrics!

Ok...I love the Smashing Pumpkins - Corgan writes some trashy lyrics at times but he's still my musical hero. But James - before St Anger, he wasn't about the lyrics being all about him so much. Load and Reload had some personal topics, and you get a few others through the albums (The God That Failed), but if you comapre the classy, well thought out lyrics of that song, compared with 'Suicide, I've already died, you're just lie I've been waiting for' (the lyrics or close to the lyrics, from a song played in the Youtube teaser on the last page) seems so much more lame.

But I'm looking forward to hearing what the album is like and if the teaser is indicative of the rest of the album.

Thats a good observation, hadn't really notced much about the lyrics side of things. We cant forget the musical side of thing load onwards that also IMO let metallica down. Less complex guitar riffs, less complex solo's on kirks part, Lars playing with dustbins, James not getting drunk as much during live performances etc etc.

Listen to St Anger's lyrics - they're like bad, simply poetry.

Once again, it feels really bad to bag a bloke who went through a nasty patch, and has given us so much of himself so we can enjoy music, but it's got to be said :/ - James is a legend, always been in my Top 5 musical gods. But write lyrics like you used to, about things other than your addictions and self hate!

the new shit sounds like a repeat of st. anger.

You know what the hilarious thing is, go and listen to the fear factory album Concrete, take a step back, and then go and listen to St Anger.

No really, you have to. You'll be surprised, maybe even shocked. Neither album I'd care to listen to very often, if at all, still, it's interesting.

they have been producing crap album after crap album for close to 20 years now.

You have to understand that the band members need money too. The arguement of "If you can't make anything decent, don't", just doesn't work when the only thing you're any good at is music. Besides, they aren't the only band that's put out crap music all the way until their demise, just look at Black Sabbath, wow, read the wikipedia entry, and it plays like a US soap opera. If someone had told them that they'd put out a few of the worlds most crapest albums, so crap that fans pretend they don't exist.

Anyways, this album is either going to be experimental, or another "one". Ouch, don't you just hate people who love that song? It's up there with Whiskey in the jar. You can always tell the type of metallica fan that came into the game on "one", then enjoyed load and reload, and probably half loved St Anger, and will absolutely explode apon hearing someone call Metallica's version of Whiskey in the jar crap, and then will wish to beat me up when I declare S&M a complete and utter snorefest. Guy at work used to force me to endure this album over and over and over the course of an 8 hour day, and I _was_ a fan of the band, obviously the earlier stuff.

This has been argued to death, either way, bring on the next album, it's at least going to be something to talk about.

It's all subjective interest so who really cares about Metallica's fanbase nowadays.

For example, my first album of theirs was Load, bought it when i was like 12 years old, then my favourite album became Master of Puppets, which is kind of a no-brainer, but you could say my music taste must've progressed to go from the album where they had makeup on to their most powerhouse record.

I'm a long-time fan of Rick Rubin's productions, and I'm keen to see the new album from this point of view as well, not just as a Metallica fan.

Hope they tour, hope they sell-out, and I hope to see the early 80's elitists still whinge about their new stuff, because quite frankly, we know they're still alive and kicking if this is happening :)

in regards to the lyrics comments, james normally has some horrid demo lyrics before he settles on proper lyrics which are much better.
anyone remember those 'temptations' lyrics from SKOM? makes you shudder doesnt it. (and thankfully it got scrapped for the album).

my guess is some of these snippets are demo/early footage of the new stuff, but just shown to wet our appetite. i have alot of faith in rick rubin to clean up the sh** :P

as for tour later this year, that would be F*$&ing awesome.
i have inside word AC/DC are doing a one off show in melbourne in october/november so to have metallica also, will be amazing.

im looking forward to the new album, just cos im a huge metallica fan.
i find there are parts of each and every album i love and hate, but i dont just hate something cos its different. i am skeptical at another good, old fashioned release, but i am looking forward to hearing their new stuff.

took mine up a few days ago. :D

here's the metclub email referencing it all

MISSION: METALLICA . . . LET THE RIDE BEGIN

Enough already . . . we've seen everything in this little preview of yours . . . let's get on with it! Okay, okay . . . on May 27, 2008 Mission: Metallica becomes our way to bring you in and share with you not only the writing and recording process that's been taking place in the last 18 months, but also what's ahead between now and when the record is in your hands. And instead of waiting and releasing some "making of the record" additional DVD in a bullshit deluxe package when the album comes out, we figured why not let you be part of it up front?

Here's the deal . . . Mission: Metallica is your chance to be on the inside of the new album with fly on the wall video footage, riffs and excepts of the music, studio photos, cool contests, and some trips back in time to Lars' vault with live downloads and rare photos. You're going to be part of the experience over the next four months or so as we put the finishing touches on the album, including mixing, mastering, artwork, photo sessions, etc.

When you're cruising around the site, you'll notice that there is a platinum version . . . more photos, more video clips, more contests, a download of the new single when it's ready, downloads of photos, videos, and live shows, and a copy of the new album in the format of your choice with it arriving to you the same day it hits the record stores. And since we know we might have been a smidgen light with album updates over the last year, we want you guys to know how much we appreciate your patience so we insisted to the record company that Metclubbers of course would have their Met-fix for free! Here's how it works . . . we want you to hear and see all the videos, photos, riffs . . . the whole thing, so we're going to e-mail you a coupon code that will give you the full platinum experience for free . . . everything except the actual album (the label really wasn't down for that one if you know what we mean!) You'll get the code via your Club-registered e-mail address (make sure it's up to date AND check your spam folders) some time on Saturday so you are ready to rock when the full site launches on Tuesday.

You're still going to get all your Met news here . . . along with Clubber only contests (wait 'till you see what we have for you at Bonnaroo!), meet and greets, and all the other cool shit that we throw at you . . . who knows we might even sneak you a few studio photos as we finish up!

Now the fine print . . . because of all the different rules, laws, currencies, record company crap, and generally, the ins and outs of all the far corners of the world, the ability to purchase the album on Mission: Metallica isn't going to be available in every country . . . but that's okay because as a Met Club member, you will get to see all the videos, hear all the riffs, check out the contests and photos, and we'll have the album in the store here when it comes out. We're going to keep you posted and we're going to make sure that we do whatever we can, so that no matter where you live, you'll have a kick ass time checking it out.

We're excited to take this ride with you . . . and have all kinds of cool stuff planned for the summer. To be honest with you, just like the album, the site is still a work in progress so along with all the new music, we're also going to keep adding things for you to see, do, and listen to. There is an element of making this up as we go along, so let's have fun with that. Let us know what you think about the ride and if there's anything we're missing.

I agree, Cliff appears to have been the real soul of Metallica. After his death, the remains of Cliffs work (soaked up in Justice For All) were all gone, hence the 'Hard Rock' Black album (which I found to be disappointing). It'll be interesting to see what comes of all this and whether they can claw back the respect they once commanded.
