Hey my peoples...Just had a thought if i got some kickass Thermaltake Water Cooling eg. Bigwater 745 or 760i? what would be a really high Overclock for the q6600, maybe like 4.5ghz. obviously it would have to run stable. I think giraffe got his core 2 up pretty high. Thanks

I'd expect 3.6 or 3.8 on water.

Start small and work your way up. Every chip/board/ram has their own limitations.

You can safely start at 3.0gb (333x9) and work your way up from there. Move the clock (FSB) up at say 20mhz increments until you find you need to increase voltage. Then increase the voltage until it's stable (0.125 at a time for most boards).

Don't go crazy and start with high FSB and high voltages, if you want it to be stable you should spend the time now to get it right.

Penryns overclock a lot better then the conroes. You can get it running 4.6ghz on air or something like that..

These perform really crap as WaterCoolers.

A Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120 is more then half the price and will perform better

If you're going with water cooling, do it right the first time and buy quality components or don't do it at all.

I can get up to 4.0GHz on mine, but it isn't stable, 3.8GHz stable.

I now run it at 3.6GHz so there is a little bit of headroom incase it is a hot day

you will hit 3.2ghz and freak out.. cause you dont know how to get it stable.....(stick with air until you get things going)

4.5ghz is dreaming for water cooling.. need like liquid nitrate.

isnt giraffe on vapour chill?

errr, the words thermaltake, kickass and watercooling should never be used in the same sentence. A good air cooler will perform better than those things. With REAL water cooling I would expect a q6600 to get to 3.6ghz-3.8ghz if lucky. Other wise with air cooling people usually stick to about 3.2ghz-3.4ghz if lucky.

No..Those are crap kits, customs the way for water cooling, better off getting some decent air cooling.

In the penalty box

I am on 3.0GHZ, is the extra performance warranted for the extra 600mhz, when a new cooler, case fans, higher voltages, heat and stress outputs start to occur with increased levels of power consumption? Is there much day to day diff that can be noticed from 3.0GHZ and 3.6GHZ?

And to pick up chicks too. They love it when you talk FSB's and multipliers. I just have to say I can get mine up to seven and a half to win em over...

errr....

Iam having trouble getting my Q6600 over 3.2ghz everything I try won't work, it just wont boot, I have the following:
CPU: Q6600@3.2ghz
Motherboard: Asus Striker II Formula 780i
Memory: 4gb Cosair XMS2 6400C4 4 X 1GB with Cosair Fan
Video Card: 2 x 8800gts 640mb in SLI with DuoOrb coolers
Case: Antec P180
Power Supply: Thermal Take Tough Power 850watt
CPU Cooling: Thermalright Exteme 120 with Scyth Fan

Can anyone give advice on a way to get a higher overclock, or do people think this is my limit?

you just need to learn to oc ..XD.

there other reasons why it cant boot aswell.
not enoughf volts on the ram. nb-sb ect...

what settings you have,?

3.2ghz should be around 1.35 vollts on a b3.

i am a nube to overclocking but i just set my q6600(b3) with thermaltake extreme to 3.0ghz (333 and setting 800mhz ram to 2.5) and it seems to be running hot, averaging around 50.

i have a p35-ds3, i set the voltage to auto to see what it would do. cpu-z tells me 1.360V. what setting should i be looking for?

i'm scared to run prime95 on it after temps hit 65 before overclocking.

can i get some clarification?

even 80 deg is safe.. but running at that temp day in -day out is gona cause problems. or probly none at all..

70 and under is the safe ((recomended )) temp for the q6600

you have way way to much volts for 3.0ghz.

set it to 333 @ 1.28 volts (1.3v is stock) but you can run it with less volts..

. what happens when you run a stressing program is that your pc will just reboot if the cpu isnt stable. no biggy.. it dosnt damage your pc..

and also if those are idle temps..

then.......

you got to fix it!..

try remounting. getting new thermal paste.

or laping your cpu.

I would be too! As mentioned, check everything is seated properly, maybe back down the vcore if you can...

surly i can produce something decent with this hardware

i wanna get my q6600 to @ least 3GHZ that would be sweet to start as i still only have stock cooler.

I have identical (just a different PSU, Ram and GPU).

3ghz is easily achievable on stock fan. 3.4 is also achievable, 3.6 is getting to the point where you need to look at new cooling. I find 3.0 more than sufficient since it never runs over 50c (max load is 54c under multithreaded prime95) but my room is airconditioned.

Multiplier 9.0
FSB 333mhz
Ram either stock or 333x2 (667)

Vcore shouldn't need to be adjusted off auto unless you want to lower it to reduce heat.

In your BIOS.

You might want to read the mainboard manual as well as a few guides on overclocking before you proceed.

www.clunk.org.uk/forums/...ers-p5k-add.html

The main 4 settings you need to change are the Multiplier, FSB, Ram clock and Vcore.
Adjusting ram timings is more advanced and not entirely necessary IMO.

While you should also disable C1E, Speedstep etc you only have to do that once.

Once you have the desired clock run multithreaded Prime95 and make sure it doesn't fail or run too hot (12-24 hours is advisable for a stable result).

Using a Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard and 2 x 2GB DDR2-800 SuperTalent RAM, I sit nicely on a 3.6GHz OC (Prime95 stable 10+ hours) with the following BIOS settings:

Settings:

Advanced Bios

- Disabled CPU Thermal Monitor
- Disabled C1E

MB Intelligent Tweaker (M.I.B)

- Multi to 9
- FSB to 400
- Memory Divider to 2.0
- Lock PCI Speed to 100MHz
- DDR2 over-voltage control +0.3 (RAM rated to 2.1v so upped from 1.8v)
- PCI-e over-voltage control +0.1
- FSB over-voltage control +0.1
- G(MCH) over-voltage control +0.1
- CPU Voltage Control to 1.425v (vcore is running at 1.36v)

Temps under load were from low 40's to low 50s.
Temps at idle are 40-38-38-43
