The camera is really pulled down by the lack of xenon flash.

SE has had it since the K800 back in 2006. Why, why, why?

Dumb question, but I assume that the DVB-h function is useless for us at the moment - i.e. you can't pick up TV as yet?

And I agree that the xenon flash should be rolled out across all their top end models.

Seems like the TV tuner function is the next in thing, just like the GPS was for the N95. I'm probably going to stick to my N95. Save me the trouble from upgrading again, and wasting big bucks. It doesn't look like there's going to be significant changes.

i'd like to know what's with the smaller battery (950mAh) and the lack of manual shutter.

the lack of shutter is actually one of the main reasons why i put off getting the N95 8 gig..

at least this one doesn't have the really small keys like the N82.

apart from the battery and shutter, it looks like an awesome phone. i am glad it kept the 2.8" screen like the n95-2.

This possibly could be the next-N95 massive thread that we'll see on this forum =)

Well if announcement is next week then the phone won't be picked up by aussie networks for another 4-6 months. Let's get comfortable for some long speculation and discussion!

well its not 100% confirmed so yeh ><
anyway like someone else said, the main improvement to n95-2 is really only the memory.. Its nice that they included a memory slot as well, but seriously i dont think im gonna buy this phone if its going to be very expensive.

It is useless for now (unless you travel to Europe), and won't be of any use until our government auctions off the two special broadcast licenses that allow DVB-H transmissions. Even when that happens there is no guarantee that the winner will broadcast anything worth watching.
It would be more useful to include a DVB-T receiver.
EDIT: Also DVB-H will be pretty useless unless the broadcaster has lots of smaller transmission sites in the inner city - the DVB-T transmission sites on hills on the outskirts of our cities are useless to portable devices without a decent external antenna in the inner city.
So the DVB-H receiver will end up as a useless addition.

sell it later,
expected release date 2008, Q3

that means July 2008. And even when they releases it, it would take time for Australians to get that....

even Nokie's competetion puts out better phones in the same intented market, Nokia would stick to its plans.

I'm pretty disappointed to tell you the truth. I have a N95 as my work phone and I don't see myself upgrading. You would have thought they learnt from the previous battery problems and put it a meaty battery even if it did add to the weight of the phone.

lol i remeber when i used to go crazy here on whirlpool forums about the n95 and its release, now i have it and had it since release day, lol and already n95 8GB and N96 is out or soon to be out lol

however me staying with n95, dissapointed with battery life, and the color black, i like some silver at least like N95 has.

when u are on contract with an N95, no other phone is worth more to upgrade unless its with stats that the (rumoured) nokia N98 is stating, well untill then.

Plus a question i had, does the Nokia N78 have a special radio i heard that allows u do play radio without head phones connected or somthing, i dont get it whats with its reciever?

* WCDMA2100/900 (HSDPA) / EGSM900, GSM850/1800/1900 MHz (EGPRS)

There are TWO different models of N96 being released (just like there are 2 different N95 versions in regards to supported bands - one supports UMTS 2100 the other supports 850/1900

The specs you've listed are for the European version (900/2100) whereas the North American version is 850/2100.
So Telstra will sell the 850/2100 version and Optus & Vodafone will sell the 900/2100 version.

Correct, but only out in remote areas, they'll continue to use UMTS 2100 in major towns and centres plus major highways.
They can't deploy UMTS 900 anywhere they currently have heavy GSM 900 usage.

USB transfer speed is x5 of current phones..

that means around 2.5-3.0MB per second
a decent improvement, still the card reader will get around 6mb since the sandisk microsd cards are class 6.

Also rumour has it that this N96 doesn't have 3d hardware acceleration...... wonder if thats true.

Nobody knows what cpu it is using yet, once we know we would understand more.

WEll, The SE lines over the reason for 256k colours over the 16 million colour issue was that human eyes would not properly tell when the screen is that small.

I own a K608, K800, 6120C and Now the N82.

The K800 screen was a leap forward compare to the K608 one, then between the 6120C and K800, both 2 inch in szie, i can't really tell much difference while the 6120C and the K800 display the very same wall paper or photo. THe 6120C one was brighter, but that was it. HOWever the 2.4 inch screen of the N82 was not very quality. Unlike the K800 screen which was bad at strong day light situations, the N82 screen was surprisingly good under sunlight but it has only five level of brightness to adjust compare to more than twice with the 6120C. IT was also like only three quarter as bright as the 6120C at max.

as for level of colour depth, my eyes can't tell the difference between a 256k screen and a 16 million screen and so I bet 95% of user can't tell.
THe screen looks better with the K850i however uppon inspection at stores, but that doesn't justify chosing the K850i over the N82.

SE and others support the 256 k screen even claim it uses less power, therefore prolong the battery life compare to the 16 million counterpart.

On that note, I believe you actually won't get more than 64K on that device. I'm pretty sure Windows Mobile only outputs up to 64K and the fact the actual display supports higher is irrelvant and more advertised for marketing than anything. Read that in some reviews for the HTC TyTN 2 not long ago since it too advertises itself as having a 256K display.

You may want to read up on that, but thats what I've heard anyway be it correct or not.

edit: thats if by SE you mean the new Sony Erricson Smartphone using windows mobile. Symbian based ones probably differ.

the 320x240 can only show 64k pixels at once, however its the gradation of colours that matters... once again the more the merrier....

if you have only 64k << you only have 64k colours MAX, that means you missed out on some gradations of colours...

if you have 16million, you have the full set!!!!, yes not all can be distinguished but thats not the point. the point is you have lost colour!

I was at the Sydney launch on Monday night where they showed off the N96 and I hate to say it but I was a bit disappointed. THe N96 actually looks more bulky and thick than the N95-8GB (which I currently use), in fact the N96 is marginally thinner, but it definitely doesn't look that way.

The only benefits over the N95 8GB are the increased memory and memory card slot. The N96 comes with Maps 2.0 which is a free download for existing Nokias anyway so no advantage there.

Granted that the models that were on display were not final production models, but going based on what I experienced, the N96 didn't feel solid at all, it creaked when pressing buttons and the casing in general was not solid like the N95 8GB.

The camera is the same, it has dual LEDs but didn't seem to illuminate any better than the N95 8GB when taking side by side photo comparisons.

Also the shiny plastic on the N96 is not as sleek and elegant as the N95's, it also looks much better in photos than in real life!

The biggest downfall of the N96 apart from no Xenon flash (which it really should have included) is the smaller battery! Nokia claims that the power usage has been optimised to not need a bigger battery, but if power usage was optimised and a BL-6F 1200 mAh battery included then they could have been onto a winner and a compelling upgrade from other N-Series devices.

The N78 however was a much more impressive announcement! The included FM transmitter is very cool and much more useful than the DVB-H of the N96, the N78 looks great and has most of what is available in the N96, minus the bigger screen and inbuilt memory. It also has a BL-6F bigger battery which should have been in the N96 without a second thought!

phunky: keep your N82, the camera in that shits all over the N96 and anyone with a N95, I would recommend to upgrade to a N95-8GB rather than to a N96.

My other theory is that they purposely included a smaller battery to enable a revised model like the N95, the second generation of the N96 could be a winner, but the N96 in its current form can be skipped!

Hehe, thanks mate! It's a bit disappointing they bring out a phone like that but doesn't put a decent flash in? I mean I don't use my camera phone THAT much, but when I do whip it out to take a photo I want to know that it's going to come out half decent, and the N82 is awesome for that.

N96 will be out in 2008 Q3.

Based on previous Nokia release dates, this timeframe sits somewhere between human years & dog years... so expect it to be on shelves in Australia somewhere around 2009 Q1.... with Three releasing it 2009 Q2 after they've crippled the software lol.

Has anyone else heard anymore about when the this phone is being released here in Australia and if it would be with the Optus network?

Are people looking at getting this phone when it is released?

I am looking at updating my phone, as my plan ends in June, and am ideally looking at WLAN on a phone. Decent camera and of course 3G. Would people recommend this phone?

haha, you beat me to it. I remember the n95 thread.... "maybe this week" "hey, has anyone rang up 3 in the last hour to see if there is any new news"

I am expecting this phone to come out late this year, early next year.

the question, is it worth upgrading from my n95-1...
my n95 is almost a year old now, and has a few scratches... I was thinking its almost time for me to upgrade, as I never have a phone for more then 16 months... looks like this will be the phone I upgrade to.
shame its pretty much a newer n95, with no "wow" factors (when n95 first came out, it had the 5mp camera, gps)

will this phone have a wobbly slider, and the screen hiss?

Nokia have commented on this and decided that YES it will have both the wobbly slider and screen hiss...

lol What kind of question is that? It doesn't get planned that way, it just happens with some dodgy final production.

You wish.
I would think that th N96 will be out in the USA and Asia Q4 this year
( never take Nokias estimate release date as a certainty ). Australia
probably wont get it until Q3 2009.
If Im still selling mobile phones I will deninitely be selling the N96 as it is sure to sell well just like the N95 and N95 8GB.
Has anyone seen the release about a Nokia full touch phone to compete with the Iphone?. Now that will sell well.

From the pictures it looks great, looks much sexier than any N95.

But that's all it seems like, just another N95 revision, nothing which immediately stands out as being amazing. The memory slot + large internal memory is what they messed up with on the N95 8GB. Just seems like a bit of an attempt to match (and outdo) Apple as far as capacity.

Good, hopefully my N95 can hold on till the generation after the N96.

I really dont like the look. Its like the N81 and I dont like the shape or look at all. Although by the time it comes out, I will probably fall in like I always do. Enough reading about it, enough looking at it and Ill warm to it (although I havent warmed to the N81) By the time this comes out Ill owe $280 on my current phone which I can pay out by selling it and get the next model - I know myself well enough to know I will get sucked in eventually unless they announce something even better through the year before this is released and I might wait for that instead. This new phone thing and me is becoming a real problem!

Yes, there will always be something better. But I don't wait for something that isn't actually announced. Kind of like those waiting for the iphone to be released here and so sure it will be 3G. I don't see the point in holding out for what doesn't exist yet. So if nothing has been announced when the N96 is released I can see myself getting sucked in!

I too was going to buy the N95 8gig until I found out you cannot expand the memory! Yeah sure 8gig is enough, but they said the same thing back in the 80s when 20meg was considered HUGE! :)

16gig for videos and music is perfect for now and when they bring em out in 80gig and beyond, well... forget the iPod - it will be useless.

yeah optus will have it, just a q of when. HSDPA bands are the same as what optus use, and it will sell well so dont see why they
wont have it. And they do have the n95 8gb now, so one would think they would get the successor.

if its to be released earlier, im sure they would let people know this. i dont know where may 7th come from, but it defo isnt coming out this early.

and it will be out in Europe/Asia first, and our networks will, as usual, get it probably a month or more later than european networks. though you can always buy outright from asia or europe when its first released.

As someone who has seen one, your comments just back up what I have been thinking up until now.

Its now over 12 months since I got my N95 and I still can't see anything on the horizon that I definitely want to replace it with. I guess that means the N95 was damn good for an April 2007 phone!

yeh sure it has extra memory but in terms of features..... not sure if the N96 is really a "Clear winner"

Then again the N95 is pretty hard to top... i've compared the features of the N95 and the features of the LG KS20 and iPhone...

honestly the only thing going for the other two phones is the sex appeal of the touch screen... other than that they're pretty average phones in terms of features. Neither has GPS nor better cameras. (I ain't going into too much detail but those two are two main factors which the N95 wins in...)

That being said it's gonna be hard for nokia to come up with another phone packed with features and remains stylish and petite.

(Only other phones with more or better features than the N95 are PDA phones honestly.... but they're ugly IMO)

I still think the N96 looks hot but since i already have a N95 i think i'll pass... other than massive amounts of storage(which i don't think i'll ever use) i'm happy with my N95

On top of that, personally I liked having a memory card I could swap between devices. Suprising to know the N95 was only usb1.1 speed in its connection type though according to wiki.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_N96

I have a n93 still, but the contract runs out around november. To be honest, there doesn't look like there are any phones to step up too..

I'd be happy with an updated n93i, that has a gps to be honest :P

With all nokia phones, they design one major flaw and at least two minor ones to make people still look at others. At least, it seems that way. Wonder what it'd be for the n96?

It's closer than you might think. It will be released this month or next along with a few other new Nokia handsets...

I would say there's a good chance this seller is legit as long as he's got a few friends in high places.

Edit: On closer inspection of the pictures, it's clear that's it's not an N96 because of the shape of the media keys and the missing silver button near the End key, but my statement still stands that the real N96 is coming this month or next :)

Engelsen brings up a point here.... According to the phone rumors thread, there will not be another n93 form factor phone (flip phone with swivel) for at least another year. My contract runs out in about 9-10months, when I'd be looking for a new phone. This one may be out, because of the no xenon flash. MP count be darned, if I can't actually see the image, the quality doesn't matter to me then.

Here is the official Nokia Australia N96 Product Page. This N96 has had a major facelift over the N95 which is looking a bit outdated these days. You will also notice that the housing around the screen is thicker than the N95. Good thing is that the Nokia N95's will be reduced to clear as the N96 replaces it.

Having an N95 at the moment I dont see how this phone is that much of an upgrade. Xenon flash i can see being useful but thats about it. The visual upgrade while flashy will attract fingerprints like mad.

Anyway I suppose if they phase out the N95 its a good replacement I just dont feel the need to upgrade when its seems like a step sidewards rather than forwards.

Out of interest what is DVB-H, as I understand over the air here is DVB-T (terrestrial) if im not mistaken. Whats the H stand for and what can it pick up in australia?

Also this comes with FP2 as opposed to FP1 in the N95 right? Is there much difference?

I agree, doesn't seem like much of an upgrade but i'll probably end up getting it because i'm a fool.

Out of interest what is DVB-H
'H' is for handheld, this is basically a digital tv standard for handheld devices, i'm guessing there's some sort of compression involved so that it doesnt use a lot of bandwidth that usual digital tv does. It's not commercially available here in Australia unfortunately, so it's a nice feature that's pointless in Australia.
