If you have been waiting for Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista, well, you can now mark your calender. We just received word that Microsoft has scheduled Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for release to manufacturer (RTM) on Monday, February 4, 2008. That's just 3 days away! The OEMs will also receive Windows Vista Service Pack 1 during that week.

Anti-Hack Patches

Also coming with SP1 but not in the current release candidate, we will also be including updates that deal with two exploits we have seen, which can affect system stability for our customers –

* The OEM BIOS exploit, which involves modifying system files and the BIOS of the motherboard to mimic a type of product activation performed on copies of Windows that are pre-installed by OEMs in the factory.

"Performance and reliability improvements in core scenarios such as file copy, network browsing, and improved response time to resume from sleep."

I hope the above is worth it otherwise it will be a big yawn after more then a years wait!

this bit i like :>

Reported Size Of System Memory

With SP1, Windows Vista will report the amount of system memory installed rather than report the amount of system memory available to the OS. Therefore 32-bit systems equipped with 4GB of RAM will report all 4GB in many places throughout the OS, such as the System Control Panel. However, this behavior is dependent on having a compatible BIOS, so not all users may notice this change.

Even though we have Vista licenses for all our systems, we use that on the QA computers to avoid any problems when we re-image them back to virgin state after test runs.

Looks like we'll have to be a lot more careful tracking images and hardware configs.

Grrr ;)

BTW, for those interested in the sizes of the latest version of SP1

- the windows update download about 80MB for my Vista Business system and about 100MB for my Ultimate system (both 32 bit).

- the network installable version was about 430MB for the x86 version and 720MB for the x64 version.

The network version is probably best if you have 4 or more Vista systems or you reinstall often.

Hopefully but for some reason I am doubting it because XP still has that issue (although not as bad) in SP2.

Its a shame, Vista has been rock solid for me since beta - since SP1 RC has been on, Vista has been suffering from memory leaks and application instability.

I realise its not RTM yet and the final version will be more stable - but it is interesting to note ;)

Kind regards

Opening windows at the same location / size they were at when last closed is the responsibility of the software which creates the window, not the OS. XP / Vista is not involved in window positioning unless the application does not specify a window location or unless it is system software such as Explorer (which operates in the same way - just that Explorer is seen as part of the OS).

By the way. I just checked TechNet, and SP1 is not up there yet. It usually gets them early.

If your looking to install vista and are not sure, wait for SP1 (SP1 RC1 is a big step ahead of the RTM version) and install it in dual boot if you want to be safe.

In the long run Retail is actually cheaper, But Im talking LONG run.

With OEM, you need to keep it on one machine, buy an upgrade license and its still tied to that origional machine, so to be properly licensed if you buy a new PC you need to buy a new license.

However, with Retail you can take it to all your new machines moving it as you go, then buy upgrades which still keep the retail licensing (can move it from one PC to another) so you can buy upgrades forever.

However, most people do the two install upgrade trick and such...

Im am now thinking about getting vista since sp1 is due out tomorrow (apparently) the difference between vista OEM 4 installs at $250 vs ultimate, lets say unlimited, means I could buy 2 oem versions 8 installs and I still save money, I don’t see how yuocan say its cheaper in the long, run, were not talking about 40 installs later here, lets be practical…. No, you shouldn't. RC means "release candidate". So it's a product Microsoft haven't officially released yet, but have put forth for testing as a candidate to BE the finished version. So while something is still in RC status, there are possibly still bugs and last minute things that can be found before they release it properly.

So, just wait for Service Pack 1 to be released, don't bother installing RC1 unless you absolutely need something thats included in it that can't wait for or you're willing to test it.

Non computer savvy users should prob avoid Betas and RCs, there's simply no point.

Your concern is valid but, all you have to do is call MS activation and ask to activate again, I've read that all you have to say is that this is ONLY copy you're running and they will provide new activation code.

Retail key code, you still have to do the same (so in user's perspective, what gives??)

That's interesting. I have been told that with Vista OEM, once you activate it on a computer, that is the only computer that it can be activated on. That is where retail has the advantage.

Very confusing.

Yes this is correct, but it's not a physical/real world limitation. That is just how the licence terms and conditions read, and you should obide by them.

In practice, it's a different story.

Are you talking about the Release Candidate?

Then yes, you do have to uninstall it when you install the official SP1 pack.

And apparently allow one hour for the Windows uninstaller to settle before installing the official SP1.

Man sounds a bit complicated. I do not want to format my HD and install a fresh copy as I have a lot of things set the way I want for the last 12 months. Maybe I will just pass on the official SP1 release as my pre-release version is working perfectly.

Dude its easy, just uninstall the beta SP1 (google you beta SP1 and go to MS link and it will tell you how to uninstall). After that, allow your comp to sit there for an hour or so (you can still do whatever you want) and then download and install official SP1. Easy. :)

You will have to update eventually as SP1 RC will stop working by mid year!

Typical microsoft BS!

Yes, I thought it was nice that they are doing this purely out of concern for the system stability of their customers. Though I'm not sure why they imagine that their customers would have this thing installed on their system to begin with.

RTM doesn't mean its not available to the public.
if there is a staggered release it'll be available to partners and testers, then technet and msdn then anyone, though I suspect it'll be available to everyone at once.

I'd also wager that the 4th is a red herring,
I remember vista being available 1st up in the morning aest on november when they put it on msdn

Already on torrent sites:
Build 6001.18000.080118-1840 is official.

Build 6001.18000.080126-2040 is China release.

According to Neowin the 6001.18000.080118-1840 build contained a major bug, which is fixed in the newer 6001.18000.080126-2040 build.

So I guess we'll have to wait and find out what build will turn up on WU.

edit - 6001.18000.080126-2040 build.

LOL!, since when has the possibility to bypass compulsory product activation affect system stability?

After SP1 is installed you won't be able to run if you have a bypassed system so that would affect stability.

... oh, wait a minute ;)

That's interesting. I have been told that with Vista OEM, once you activate it on a computer, that is the only computer that it can be activated on. That is where retail has the advantage.

OEM does not give you the right to call ms for support. I think that might be the only real hurdle these days.

All product support is done by the company that sold you the OEM, but you can call MS about activation and WGA issues.

windowsvistablog.com/blo...s-vista-sp1.aspx

So we have to wait another 5-6 weeks to be disappointed? Outstanding. I'm looking forward to the 'wait for SP2 pack' crowd to get harping.

You can hear it now 'SP1 sucked. Vista sucks. Wait for SP2. Grab SP3 for XP blah, blah, blah'. Fun times ahead.
