I was wondering if anyone knows of an app I am sure I saw on a screen shot somewhere (elive maybe). I always work with a paper "todo" list at my right hand side. I was looking for an app that displays a todo list transparently on the desktop (and a calendar maybe). Anyone know of such an animal ???

This seems to do what you want: www.rainlendar.net/cms/index.php

doesn't look quite like what i am after. I want it to really appear as a series of dates and notes next to the date that sit on the desktop transparently. I am sure I have seen one on a screenshot somewhere. Just can't remember where!!

What desktop environment is it for? KDE or GNOME? I can think of several for GNOME:

*Tomboy
*Sticky notes (found as an applet, by right-clicking on the Panel -> Add to Panel)
I'm also sure there's a gDesklet plugin for a TODO list, but I've never used it myself.

It sounds like a gdesklet for GNOME (there is one for KDE as well, can remember what it was called).

You can make any window transparent. Thats a job for the window manager.

They're called karamba, super-karamba and on KDE 4, plasma/plasmoids. Interestingly, KDE4.1 promises plasma/plasmoid compatibility with OS X's widgets...

KDE 4 doesn't have many plasmoids yet, so best to stick with KDE 3.x and super/karamba.

Do a search for 'todo' in the Karamba section in www.kde-look.org

The above are good for notes.

Sorry guys.. I am using KDE on Mandriva 2008. SuperKaramba looks to be close. I have installed it and loaded a theme called basket (basket note pad). I am still playing but I think it is what I am after. Thanks again all.

Evolution has a facility to record a "to do" list. You can set items for particular days, such that they'll show up in a popup under your clock when you click it ... I've only used it under gnome, though.

I know the answer isn't a gtk app, but I'd highly recommend rememberthemilk.com. It integrates into your firefox sidebar, has google gears support so works when you're offline, isn't over-complex and have a nice UI.

It integrates into google calendar and gmail too.

Sorry I can't recommend an actual linux app, but having your todo list in the internet can be a great help if you're often at different PCs. Not sure if its iCalendar support works with evolution, but it might.

FWIW I keep trying evolution but am constantly disappointed by its instability. Even on a clean install it crashes way too often, and leaves rogue processes running in the background.

Same for Kontact in KDE... there's a TODO list and a Calendar with event facility.
