We got a Optus cable modem connected to a broadband router DI-704P then connect to Switch as well over 1 and half years. It works prefect all the time. Suddenly, the router doesn’t work anymore. We turn it off and on and still not working. Try to reset it and also not working. Don’t know what happen. We will contact Dlink and see what they can do. But in the meantime, we would like to connect directly to the switch. I try it and only one computer can use the internet. Anyone can tell me how do I connect more computers to the switch and everyone also can use the internet? What do I have to do?Thanks

Exactly correct. You cannot use the switch as a router, so only pc can connect via the switch to the cable modem.

For the meantime, if you have a spare network card in the pc, you can use ICS (ie route internet via a pc), but routers are now so cheap it is easier to replace it.

Suddenly, the router doesn’t work anymore.

99% of the time it is a dead plug pack. Go to Jaycar and buy a new one for $20. Take the old one so they know what voltage and current. D-Link should hang their collective heads in shame at these trashy plugpacks.

Now, I think your setup is probably modem->dlink router->switch->PC's
If you can connect to the internet with modem->PC, but not modem->router->PC - then the problem may be your router or it's configuration. To work out exactly what is the problem and what you need to do I suggest you post

confirmation of your setup
details of your router setup - is the power led on?, are the ethernet connect leds on for each connected PC? and for the cable modem? Can you access the router config web page on 192.168.0.1 - unless you have changed this IP? The router has four LAN ports - do PC's work on one but not another of these ports?

edit rpm - you've done it again.

My normal setup is modem--->Dlink router---->switch--->PC

But now, I only can connect to the internet with modem ---> PC

It is definately the router problem. The power light for router is on. The M1 Led keep blinking and no light for others ports (WAN and LAN). I can't access to the router website at all.

It is definitely the router problem.

Absolutely. They just don't last that long. Although I said go and buy a plugpack, you might find it better value to replace the dlink completely. TP-Link has plain 4 port router for a few dollars.

Where can I get the TP-link 4 port router for few dollars? How much do you mean few dollars? Also, what is the model number?

I might try to contact Dlink and see whether can get replacement as it should be still under warranty. If not, I have to buy a new one. This will be the 3 router over 4 years. Any router that will last long and not expensive???

Thanks

www.shopbot.com.au/p-55309.html

TP-LINK TL-R402M

Cheapest price is $25 so it is only slightly more than the plugpack.

Still if you present dlink is under warranty then it should indeed be replaced. That is a fairly old model and i didn't realise they still sold it.

The way to get around it for the meantime is to connect to the cable modem using the usb connection. (unless you have 2 ethernet cards available). Then connect the switch to the pc. Setup ICS in the pc. You can then route via the pc. It isn't great but as a standby it can help.
