What would people rate Iinet's Voip service.
I use this service on the Home 5 plan.
People are complaining they cannot hear me very well, when I am using this service.
I also find I get an echo or 'tunnel' effect when I am talking to people on the phone.

I find the quality is excellent.
The best results are if you go into the router and change the preferred codec to G711A (as compared to G729 which uses less data - but isn't as good), turn off comfort noise and voice activity detection.
What router are you using?

My friends can't tell the difference between PSTN or iiVoip when I call them. I'd say your settings are not correct.

Depends on the router IMO.
On the iibelkins using G.729 I find it to be perfect.
On the Billion 7404 using G.711 I find it to tunnel a bit and do a few other strange things from time to time. Turning down the handset volume helps a bit but it's still dicey.
I see you have a Billion 74xx series router, this is probably why you are having lameo quality issues.

Billion 7401 VGP-M.
I have changed the preferred codec setting to G711A as you suggested.
I couldn't find the other settings you suggested.

To be honest it's part of my plan but i just accept it as part of the cost of the internet and do not use it.
:-)
The other VOIP providers are much cheaper.

We only use G729 and it is fine.
Try turning down the volume on modem or on your phone. This will reduce echo. There is also echo cancellation in Billion under VoIP general, so enable that too.

with the billion set up the phone power settings, I found this made things work good sound wise.
Might be something to do with what the phone is expecting power wise and needs it, I assume this won't matter for all phones.
From memory, the outgoing pwr on the line here was 34 and the incoming was 9 or something.
The default settings are 4 both ways I think this ends up being toolow for the phone and it can't work correctly.
Then you'll have to have a good play around with the settings.
Also set the VoIP to Gold not the premuim setting for packet speeds.
protocols etc.

i use a cisco router at home and linksys ata (newer ata coming next week) and i have no problems even when it's uploading at 90KB
if you have QoS enable it and see how you go

I don't pay rental for the VOIP, only for the calls.
I don't have much trouble with it, occasionally I seem to have to dial twice and in the beginning it sounded like a 2-way radio but once I tweaked the settings it sounds fine. No one on the other end has mentioned call quality.

Using xPRO software and a Sennheiser headset, get excellent voice clarity.
Certainly superior to the vast majority of calling cards and probably just less than using the landline.
I use a DG834G on ADSL2

Mynetphone's quality has been absolutely flawless so far. That along with IINET's quality broadband has meant a massive reduction on my phone bill :D

I have Billion 7401VGPM with latest firmware.
To get rid of echo, in the Billion's Phone Port setting (Volume Control link at bottom), I turned down volume (Microphone now set to 5 bars, speaker at 3).
I use G-711 ulaw, G711 alaw, G729 (in that order)

There's more than one reason why iiNet support the Belkins.. they work well for VoIP.
Using a Belkin with QOS I rank the iiNet VoIP service 10/10, as do all the other people I have installed these modem/routers for. Your experience may differ with unsupported hardware.

Elsewhere, cheaper, plus extra discount if you use iiNet reseller.
will be doing alot of long distance calling to Canada
Then you may want to use MyNetFone GlobalSaver plan or GoTalk World pack.

The naked DSL plans were released today, so you can sign up.
If you're going to use iiNet's voip, then the iiNet hardware works well with it and is supported. If you use anything else, it's not supported. If you just want something that you plug in, and it works, and they will help you troubleshoot, this is the best option.
The problem with the iiNet hardware (Belkin) is that it can only support the one voip provider - so you can't pick and choose your provider so you get the best rates. Using other hardware will let you do this, but you need some time and a bit of ability to get it going.
