Firstly, apologies if there is already an N82 thread open, but forum search has been disabled at time of posting.

Some actual "in the wild" pics of it doing the rounds now;

www.symbian-freak.com/ne...n82_hands_on.htm

Looks like a great phone for the specs. I wonder if thats a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top? And I was all set to get an SE K850i too. Suppose I need to make a decision on whether the specs are so good that I can put up with another slow-ass S60 phone.

It looks a bit ugly to me. Especially the keypad area. Specs seems more or less the same as the N95 though, with the addition of xenon flash of course.

Not a fan of the buttons.

Looks OK, starting to hate the looks already, but will ultimately judge in person.

I think they're beating a dead horse by trying to make it a 'gaming phone' ala N-gage

This phone is very similiar to the N95

The specs look like this may be a worthy upgrade to my N73. I'm loving 5MP, GPS, Wi-Fi and HSDPA all in a slim candybar format. I never liked the size of the N95.

+1. I was going to plumb for an SE K850i, but I may hang on to see when this is meant to be out. My ONLY reservation in buying another nokia is that I found the S60 UI painfully slow on my N73. I just hope this offering is a bit speedier

Official "press" photos of the N82 have been recently leaked.
www.techfresh.net/gadget...-nokia-n82-phone

I'm not the biggest fan of the buttons, but it doesn't look half bad overall. The 5MP camera with that beefy Xenon flash are the biggest selling points for me (30FPS VGA Video Capture!? - Awesome).

Just a question, does anybody know if this phone will be compatible with Next G? The link above mentions quad band GSM, HSDPA and UMTS data transfer, however I'm no expert in this field.

Yep this is the phone I want, but its gonna be way out of my price range I reckon. Optus have offered me an upgrade now, but contract doesn;t run out til june next year and thinking about Vodaphone. I'm willing for $10 a month on the $49 cap, guess it might be a chance after its out a while.

Me too. My N73 is as slow as a wet week at doing anything, in fact I'm seriously considering going back to SE because of this Symbian rubbish...

really good review here meandmyphones.blogspot.c...-after-week.html

according to the reviewer, battery life seems good, the camera is great, the gps is almost as good as a dedicated sirf III device and the interface is very quick. sounds like a winner to me. it sounds stupid, but as well as the camera, the killer addition to this phone is a 3.5mm headphone jack. goodbye stupid adapters!

now i will defiintely go with N82.

I read from www.symbian-freak.com/ne...82_oficially.htm

it says "The Nokia N82 is available now in key markets with an estimated, pre-tax, unsubsidized sales price of approximately 450 euros."

does it mean it's available now?

Very very very good... i would give you a link to my flickr but then you will know what I look like..

In terms of a camera the focus and picture quality in all scenes is awesome... craps all over K850i.

The Xenon is very very very strong tooo you can be pitch black and it will light up the room.

Battery is medium. Better than N73 probably on par with N95 8GB

As a music device great if your using a wired or bluetooth headset. Access to the music on the memory card is quick.

However both speakers are located on the right handside of the phone which is quite annoying when playing video or music and your right handed.. it muffles the music.. thats the only downside..

Oh and it's finger printy cause it's a gloss finish.

does the navi-wheel thingy work on your test unit? and if yes, how is it? ive also heard reports from another person testing this phone that the accelerometer controlling the screen rotation is a bit shonky and can often rotate the screen without you wanting it to, leading to much annoyance. whats your experience with it?

Its probably bad to get so picky over these feature differences with phones as feature packed as the N95 8gb and the N82. But I have a choice to make and this is what I am thinking:

I am really excited about the N82

In comparison to the N95 8gb the N82 faster.

N82 protopype hands on:

Quote:

It's FAST (by Symbian standards of course). It's one of the faster Symbian devices I've used. Slightly faster than the N95-8GB, much much faster than the original N95 and faster than an E90. You can throw anything at it and it will eat it up. Multi-tasking for this guy is a walk in the park. I tried to cripple it by deliberately leaving applications running, within normal usage parameters of course, but it didn't work at all.

Also the N82 smaller screen can also be considered a pro, not a con. The N95 has been criticized for a low resolution considering the screen size. The same resolution will look better on the N82.

Other N82 features that the N95 8gb lacks:

Camera functionality (flash, lens cover)
Size
Memory card slot

What has the N95 8gb got over the N82?

The N95 8gb is sexier than the N82

N82 gets better all the time.

Yes probable Black N82!!!!

quote:

An additional colour variant will also be released in due course (eagle eyes may spot the Black N82 in the product manager's hand during the demo video)

Camera Speed Comparison:

Typical Camera phones versus Nokia N82:

quote:

Start-up 3.2-4.0 seconds vs 2.4 seconds (Nokia N82)
Shutter lag 0.25-0.55 seconds vs 0.15 seconds
Shot to snapshot 5.1-6 seconds vs 1.6 seconds
Shot to shot 5.1-5.8 seconds vs 3.4 seconds
3A latency (whatever that is) 1.7-2.4 seconds vs 1.7-2.3 seconds

This is regarding the battery in the N82 prototype:

quote:

Battery life (BP-6MT) is very decent. It still holds 2 bars after taking 40 photos (about 20 with flash), 1/2 hour GPS usage, 100 SMS's, 1 hour's worth of 3G usage, 20 minutes' worth of voice calls and 1 hour of web surfing over wifi.

Looking at purchasing a new mobile to upgrade my current K750i and it has to be a smart phone, which btw. will be my first smart phone.

I have looked at the Sony Ericsson P1i, W960i, Nokia N95's, Nokia 81's, Nokia 82 and the HTC Touch Cruise.

They all have the features I require and choose the N82 because of its small size compared to the other phones. The W960i is also tempting but the Wifi is 'b' only and it uses UIQ3. I'm not really sure what this UIQ3 stuff is, haven't had the chance to research it, only read on some forums people complaining.

I really like the idea of having Symbian OS, which allows me to run different software on my phone :)

I have a feeling most blokes are going to have issues using the N82's keypad. It reminds me alot of the W880's keypad. My Thumb covers most of all the keypad!

With the ladies their hands might be fine to use it. But guys generally have bigger, chunkier hands and fingers.

I use N91 which has similar keypad and I have no problem with that =)

Dont be too concerned about the buttons and layout. N82 hands on impression video's posted on youtube show reviewers surprised at how good the layout and usability is.

I hope it's not delayed. We'll probably see carriers pick the phone up in late feb if all goes to plan.

Is Limestar still around??
Limestar, are you still using the phone? Anything else you want to share?

*Edit* - Apologies if this is a stupid question in advance. I love taking videos and pictures daily with my phone. I was 99% ready to upgrade my plan with 3 to get the n95 8gb...until this phone was launched.

Does the Xenon flash also apply to taking videos as well as pictures? If I can get to take better video quality in dark situations, I will wait. If it is only for pictures, I may go for the n95 8gb.

Thanks...

Limestar is the only one who's actually played with this phone so maybe you could WHIM him. Otherwise, you could do a google search for the bloggers that have played with the phone.

Xenon flash's are normally short bursts like a traditional camera - doubt it would be able to stay on for an extended period of time.

Well the Xenon flash can't stay on like an LED does for video recording. Its part of the reason why Sony Ericsson put LED's as well as a Xenon flash. The LED's can be used for Video recording whereas the flash can't.

Thanks guys....I honestly take more videos of the kids all the time. So I guess that maybe I should stick with the n95 8gb which has the LED flash for videoing then?
In any case, I will look forward to reviews of this phone.

Thing is, that on the N95 8GB, the LED doesn't fire. Not the bright white light anyway. Only a small red light glows when video recording, even in total darkness.

It'd be good if the LED did turn on though.

nah... singapore's main language is english, most ppl in thailand speaks english too.. well i'm not going to pay more than 400 euros for that phone.. that's the market price isn't it?

400 Euros is about $AU685, $US600 is about $AU690. I guess we're expecting this phone for about the $AU700 mark. Right now on ebay it's going for about $AU900-$1100.

There are a couple Hong Kong sellers on ebay at the moment, selling for $AU1000+ including postage and handling. The U.S. powerseller is selling them for about $AU900. I know who I'm buying off!

If I purchased one of these from the states would I be likely to have any issues with aussie providers wrt gprs/mms etc?

The only thing I can think of is that the U.S. uses a different UMTS frequency for 3G services which is only supported by Telstra here. Other than that, just as long as it's a Quad band GSM phone, it should be fine.

Thanks for mentioning this... :) Oh well, sometimes that's the price you pay for being the first to get things. Overall experience in comparison to the iPhone is ok. It's a more powerful phone, but using a 5 way directional keypad is a chore. Buttons are small, although easy to push. Screen rotation is fun, I tend to use my left hand when the phone is upright and so I can turn it around now and use my right hand. Haven't taken any photos yet or downloaded maps, but will soon.

You need to look worldwide, they're selling on different ebay markets such as Hong Kong and the USA. I bought mine from the USA.

I've downloaded maps and GPS is great, without AGPS I can get a lock in less than 10 secs.

Looks like it was a fluke, now it takes about a minute and occasionally less or more. Downloaded Google maps and that works great with GPS. I've got voice navigation on Nokia maps, does anyone know if it's free for the N82? Somehow I highly doubt it, strange that it gives me turn by turn directions when I'm driving.

So is that minute GPS lock delay fairly standard? A minute is fine with me, I'd only use occasionally... if it's minutes though... that would be a drawback
