Hi all,
Signed up to the Optus Fusion $99 deal a while back, and they have sent me a free Netgear wireless router. I have no idea what the model is... Can someone tell me how to find out? The instructions that came with it never stated what model it is...
Thanks.

cable? Its probably a CG814WG v3. You can probably check what it is by logging into the router @ 192.168.0.1 in your address bar and admin/password are teh default details.

Typically no, and you wont find anyone who has done it on a DG834GSP.
However im fairly sure it can be done. The best I could do was enable the Debug mode ( 10.1.1.1/setup.cgi?todo=debug ) and log into my routers root using telnet ( Run "telnet 10.1.1.1" ). From there it is definetly possible to upload any firmware to the router (This guy has done it on a DG834G: walliteam.com/dg834 )
If you knew where to look the older versions of the DG834 even let you access their file system through http (Your web browser). Netgear soon fixed that though.

Does Optus support routers now or is this just an offer of a free router?

optus supports a range of MODEMS, as for routers i dont know how that can be affected with the network, unless you ment modem/router. Optus gave away to new customers a netgear. i got mine when i signed up for the fusion.

I'm new here, please be nice

It's true. Free offer of this package DG834GSP & WG111 on Fusion plan to the customers is just the rubbish. If you don't have problem with the wire connectivity you would end up with the WLAN issue.
I tried other router DG834. It works perfectly.
When you ask support from Optus you will be refered to Netgear or vise versa. No dam one is responsible for it.
The package of DG834GSP & WG111 are just the wreckage dumping in the public household.

I have this bundle (on a MyHome plan) and haven't had any issues at all. The connection is faster and more stable than it was with my SpeedTouch 585v6. I don't use the USB dongle though, it's still in the box. My laptop has wireless built-in.

I'm not that far from the nearest exchange. I am however about 3.5KM from the exchange my phone line is connected to. I get in the area of 5.5Mbps down and 600k-800k up.

I'm about the same distance as you from my exchange. The best i have ever got was 5.5Mbps. I have only seen that speed once on speedtest. I get about 400KB/s - 500KB/s down.

That is a good speed and if some one is telling you can get better than that well I would be very suspicious. Like wise when I switched from Telstra to Optus a sales guy from Telstra rang me promising me speeds of 15Mbps or better, the discussion went on and when I insisted on a guarantee for the speed he started to go here and there and then the distance factor suddenly came, also came in the condition of line, the number of devices and the list goes on. When I told him that I was 6km;s from the nearest exchange which he did not know, speed suddenly came down to about 2 -3 Mbps and that is what I get, and the discussion suddenly ended with a thanks for my time. Humm I wonder why?
