In Quick Look, try double clicking a folder. On my machine that opens a quick look window of the folder's contents, but after a quick flash on the screen that new window goes behind the original window.

EDIT: This bug only happens where you have the Finder set to open folders in new windows.

Call me old fashion, but I still like doing that.

Looks like I won't be using Quick Look then.

BTW Remember with any backup, it's only as good as the restore, so one has to really hope that there are no bugs with Time Machine that only show up in restore!

Whilst this is a minor bug, it's these little things that keep me from being an early adopter of a new version of OS X.

By Christmas, I'll take another look at installing Leopard. :)

I had this problem recently forum-replies.cfm?t=803605

It recurred, and I had to have both the logic board and topcase replaced. Unrelated to Leopard upgrade though.

Big issue here ...

20" Intel iMac (early 2006)
1. Tell Leopard installer to start, reboots.
2. Get to Leopard Installer DVD window .. no internal hard drive!!
3. Plug in external bootable backup .. it appears and can be used to install Leopard to or as the startup disk .. chose it as startup disk and rebooted.
4. Internal HD reappears again while booted from external HD, run Disk Utility, couple of minor repairs and it's all good.
5. Reboot to Leopard Installer DVD, no go! Internal HD has disappeared again.

This is not good :-|

It's a 250GB drive with 54GB free on the, it's still the original factory install, GUID partition table etc.

Looks like I may have to erase and install argh!

Well, nothing much to add so far.. eh . just one thing..

Time machine.. it's not a bug really .. but for what it's worth.. here goes..

If you connect external drive to your machine.. Spot Light will try to index first.. so if you have two volumes connected to the machine.. one with your old backups (or whatever files happen to be on that volume) and the other, to be used for Time Machine backup. Time machine will just sit there .. do nothing .. saying 'Preparing...' , until Spot Light finished indexing every drive.
First I thought Time Machine crashed but it didn't. If you click on Spot Light.. it will show you the drives that it's indexing at the moment. If you can't see any.. it means it's finished indexing. And you can start backing up with Time Machine.

If you don't understand what I just said .. don't worry.. just ignore this post. ;D .. May be it's the order that I'm doing things that's causing the problem.. and you might not have any.

One mentioned on IRC:

Watch a quicktime video, fullscreen it, then un-fullscreen it. The scaling smoothing is lost afterwards, for some people.

Do no use DoubleCommand , its kernel extension will make Leopard crash

Be careful which printer you are using, I've lost the ability to send fax over the network with Leopard, the CUPS drivers do not show the "Send fax" option when printing anymore :(

Do not install the xcode that ships with leopard, it breaks a lot of compatibility and if you need gcc better stick to the older version of xcode.

The thing annoying me the most in Leopard was the "stack" in the dock, they do not support sub-folders anymore. So my great list of applications, all sorted by type using links in subfolders have stopped behaving like I liked it. Now when I select a folder, it opens in the finder instead.

First installed leopard on my macbook pro (core duo) without any problems.
Then went to my iMac G5, went through the same process, but after the install and reboot all I get is a blue screen. Basically it locked itself.

anyone got any ideas?

leopard looks good though!

I have noticed that when you connect to a hidden windows share and close the finder window you cannot get back into the share. It used to show the machine followed by the share name, now it only shows the machine name.

the time is as of 10 mins ago.

Also, I can't seem to do the Apple Software Update. Every time I try I get:

The file "index-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog" couldn't be found on the server "swscan.apple.com". Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem.

However, I can access the internet just fine. Is anyone else experiencing this?

sorry, I haven't tested Mail but
software update worked fine for me earlier. but not now.. .. now ..I'm getting the same error as you. It worked fine earlier, must have been 5 hours ago. ..so I'm pretty sure it's the server side error. .. try again later..

Okay, I've found the problem and fixed it. I use "sidetrack" by raging menace for trackpad scrolling and right click (click in the trackpad). Anyway it is leopard incompatible (www.ragingmenace.com/index.html) and after uninstalling it, my MBP is back to normal. Hooray! They are working on a fix so I'll be using the Apple methods in the mean time.

So far I have:

1. Lost my folder prefs. I have some as icon view and some list. If I am in a folder and change it the change is global not just that folder. A bit annoying.

2. I have the Quicksilver problem with the icon staying in the dock - hate that.

3. Not a fan of the 3D dock - I wonder if Clear Dock has been updated.

4. Lost all my custom folder icons.

Another possible bug/feature in this area - automatic time machine backups are switched off when you're running on battery power. You can still force a manual backup, but tough luck if you forget. Time Machine definitely looks like its aimed at the desktop at this stage.

1) Mail.app not working. Bounces forever, eventually quits. Fantastic.

2) System preferences visually screwed up, cannot use them properly to activate Spaces or set background Desktop.

3) Error on System Update check.

4) The UI is ugly. Yuck. What the hell is with the menubar?

5) Takes forever to detect Firewire drives.

Performance wise, this thing is SLOW on a 1Ghz G4. It should not even be sold for this class of machine. Everything, from viewing a folder of images to using QuickLook to open a folder is slow. You can actually see the windows redrawing. The Dock in particular is very jerky.

And why on earth is Spaces off by default? Shouldn't there be a welcoming notice to run me through Spaces and tell me how to activate and use it?? Why should I have to go rummaging through system prefs, and then hit the Spaces tab? Crazy.

I'll be deinstalling Leopard on the G4 tomorrow. And I'll wait off on installing on the Intel machines until Apple move this thing out of BETA.

Grr. Mutter. Grumble.

Check for, and delete, corrupt .plist files As noted above, .plist files tend to become corrupt when introduced to new system installations and can cause problems -- particularly with application launching.

Mac OS X uses .plist (preference) files to store various information about applications. Applications routinely interact with their respective .plist files, and when these small dockets become corrupt, individual programs may be more prone to the spinning pinwheel.

If you are having these slow-down issues with a specific application, try deleting its .plist file. It will generally be located in the ~/Library/Preferences folder

Only issue I've got is I can not for the life of me get Firefox to download automatically into the Download directory :\ If I try it in the UI I get no text in the box and things keep going to the desktop. If I go at it from about:config it changes there but STILL goes to the desktop. :\

Ignore...PEBCAK issue. Nothing else that's bugging me found yet.

Update isn't working, I'm presume that's because it's not quite out in the US yet.

Emulation of a 3-button mouse in X11 no longer works. I can't paste X11 selections, nor can I bring up one of the context menus in xterm.

My custom icons for certain folders have been somehow obliterated and replaced with random application icons.

My shell .profile seems to have been cleared and my other shell setup files are gone.

*.local host addresses are not working very well. Could be a network issue though (my router has been playing up), but it is still working on my other Mac (not yet upgraded).

Time machine doesn't work on network drives (and yes, I've tried the .com.apple.timemachine.supported fix) which is not a bug, but it's disappointing. What I'd really like is to have it work with disk images (significantly more secure if you encrypt them).

Also hate the look of the new dock and menubar.

Most annoying thing I've found is you don't have any view options if you happene to be in one of those 'saved searches' in the Finder. Thus forcing me Detail view into 12pt font despite being able to change every other location to my preferred 10pt. How about a little consistency Apple?

First thing I did was turned the glass dock off. Why isn't it an option in the Dock menu?

Also this.

I had had two system hangs (I have mouse but nothing else, cannot use Option-Command to force quit) so far since installing leopard. Interesting because this is why I removed a pre release build. I have the new 24 inch iMac.

I think the hangs may be related to my USB Drive which I have unplugged.. see what happens.

1 bug i have found is under the shared network..

on the macbook at work it lists all the computers on the network
when i bring it home and connect to home it does not list the home computers
without me rebooting the machine

i have also found the whole mounting AFP/NFS/Samba shares very unstable.
They all mount fine but unmounting sometimes it works sometimes it does not

but thankfully they have made disconnecting a hung mount a lot nicer

Apart from the initial problem with Software Update and the omission of Time Machine to backup to AirDisk (!), I wasn't having any problems after being brave and doing a standard upgrade over my Tiger.10 (MacBook C2D).

I've just plugged my TV in with the Apple Video Adapter, and it doesn't detect the TV...that's an issue, can anyone else confirm that? Standard CRT 68cm Panasonic via S-Video.

If you have an external monitor plugged in and start the install, the installer window will show on the 'default' monitor (i.e MacBook screen), but the mouse will be locked to the other desktop.
Fix: remove external monitor.

(I don't recall it happening with MacBook reinstaller)

Well we have almost 24 hours with Leopard on my G4 mini.

I still dont seem to be able to find a fix for my hacked copy of iMovie08. The mods enabling it to work on a machine without core graphics support are busted now.

Also Roxio Popcorn does not work, guess they will put out a fix ?

Hopefully someone here with a mac that did not run the FrontRow hack can clarify this. According to the Leopard spec page

"Front Row requires a Mac with built-in IR and an Apple Remote."

I had the hack from Andrew Escobar to enable FrontRow in Tiger. I sent him an email about FrontRow now working in Leopard. He says we all get FrontRow, but according to the spec we dont. And I have FrontRow new version working.

I have notice on playback of a video clip "music" the video was going fast than the music.

There's no real need for Sharepoints anymore. Just do it from the System Preferences > Sharing preference pane.

Nice!! click options to change from Appletalk to SMB.

With Bootcamp, wanted to create a 50Gb partition. As the system does it all automatically now it created in FAT, when trying to load windows it reboots to do GUI install and says disk error.

Tried deleting drive and recreating as 50Gb and went to Disk Utility and created 50Gb NTFS. Now when once it installs from the blue screen and reboots, it hangs on the Boot from CD button.

Edit: I have now tried using a 32Gb FAT32 partition and still no good. When it reboots after first part of install gets a message "Disk Error", press any key to restart which doesn't work.

I also noticed, when you go to setup XP, when you select the C: partition it doesn't ask to format the drive either which used to happen with the beta copies.

Anyone else having the same problems, or been able to get it to work?

[In reply to the person whose iMac couldn't see their hard drive during the install]

We had this happen to one of our machines with the developer pre-release - it was a corrupt directory. We repaired using Disk Warrior, and all was good. (It turned out that the hard drive in this machine was undergoing a slow and painful death, which a new 100GB drive fixed!)

Has anyone noticed their Mac running warmer with the update, or is it just a warm day here in QLD? I've got Mail and Safari open and the CPU is chugging away at 55-60°. (MacBook C2D)

Fix: boot osx and put the disk in then click install and let the installer do the restart

this is going to suck if i ever have to do a clean install cause something got hosed

Open the network utility.

Go to the airport section and click advanced. Choose your home network then click edit. Click show password - password doesnt show.

Not really a glitch as it closes a security hole, but I often use this to put the password on another machine, or my iphone.

I've just discovered a problem with my USB 2.0 Lacie Porsche drive (500Gb).

It was connected to my Airport Extreme, I disconnected and plugged in to my 10.5 MacBook. A message came up saying it was unable to be repaired (there wasn't anything wrong with it I thought!), Disk Utility couldn't repair it and it was mounted 'read-only' so that I could backup what I could. Oh dear....

I connected it to my 10.4 G4 Tower and it works fine. Disk Utility says there's nothing wrong with it.

I wonder if that's a LaCie issue, or a 10.5 issue.

Ahoi! I'm still around - made a damned good pizza last week too, and thought to myself "is this pipsworthy?".

We shan't know though, I ate the lot - it was bloody good though.

Another bug in terminal.app, right clicking on URLs - the context menu grows over time, and I'm not sure what spurs it on:

I get the same, film and sound played from an external disk is no longer smooth, lots of pauses. Haven't found the cause yet though, looking at reinstalling tiger again until this stuff is sorted out.

Biggest problem for me has been erratic SHARES on an AEBSn AirDisk.

I can connect to the drives via the Connect to Server in finder, but the sidebar more often than not shows no disks present saying "connecting" endlessly and "connect as" not working.

I have lost all my Windows Shares since upgrading to Leopard on my iMac. My eMac running Tiger can see them without a problem. Vista can see both MAcs and send them files.

It seems to be affecting others:

Not sure if this is a bug, or expected behavior, but, I am finding Spaces to be a little erratic.

Mainly when using the Open and Save commands in some apps, it flicks back to a different Space (Space 1) and then you have to click back on the icon for the app to go back. A little annoying, but not the end of the world.

The major bug for me is that I am no longer able to print to my network laser printer - a FujiXerox Docuprint 204A. Leopard can see the printer, but upon trying to print, I get the error "unable to open raster".

Most annoying one I've found: videos with soft subs will go black in Front Row as soon as the first subtitle was supposed to appear.

QuickTime Player works fine, which would usually suggest it isn't the codec's fault.

I tried the old driver from 10.4, and it mounts the drive as a read only device. I can't change it at all.

I updated it with a few subheadings of applications, to make it tidier for people. If this similar sort of format is followed, it'll be easier for everyone, and we could add an index at the top or something, or solutions next to bugs, etc.

Strange one here... After I did an upgrade install, all seemed good, everything transfered nicely, all prefs came across, so then I created a second user account for my wife and when I went back to my account somehow all of my preferences for my account (that were intact immediately after the upgrade) had gone! Back to square one with all apps (including mail, safari), but of a pain.

Also, repair permissions doesn't show details- just bubbles away and states permissions repaired when it's done ( and yep I had the checkbox ticked)

But over all the OS feels really snappy

leopard installed with no problems.
No bugs so I thought until I tried to backup to dvd.
Insert blank dvd and finder opens confirming the blank, then click ok and dialogue box pops up UNRECOGNIZED DISC. this is the same with all blanks.
This is the new 24 inch intel mac.

I haven't had a lot of time to play with all the new features but these are the issues that I have had. I originally did an archive install and found that the old dock stayed. Also had real trouble with the new finder. There were some folders that when I double-clicked on them, finder would just close. Resolved this by doing an erase install. The only other issue that I have noticed, is that I am unable to play any .wmv files (quicktime becomes unresponsive), even with flip4mac installed.

I've got a weird one, yesterday the new stack/grid feature on the dock would'nt pop up at all unless i remove it and replaced them.. dunno what happened there - that was a clean/erase install - and again later on - the entire dock dissapeared and would not return unless i did a force quit/reload finder.

Anybody else with this issue?

While there's no easy way to account for everybody Leopard user's crashing, Unsanity's Application Enhancer is apparently the cause of many a BSOD turning up on a range of user's systems during a system update to Mac OS X 10.5

that SMH article is interesting. It just goes to show how ridiculous it is for Apple to use the statement "It just works" in reference to Apple. Sure it works better than Windows, but still Apple isn't so good that "It just works".

what a load of crap

if the vista installation screwed up because someone had firefox installed or had Winrar installed or something, we'd never hear the end of it, but when Apple screws up, it's because they shouldn't be held responsible for 3rd party software.

give me a fricken break.

What apple should've done was analysed the installation machine and determined if there was any software that would affect the installation and warn the user.

If you knew/read anything, you'd know it wasn't Firefox or WinRar. It was something that tweaks/edits the underlying system, so it's no wonder it isn't working for these people. Not sure what they expected though?

What apple should've done was analysed the installation machine and determined if there was any software that would affect the installation and warn the user.

I'm going to assume the best, and think that you are just ignorant of the 3rd Party application in question - the so called "Application Enhancer".

Unsanities 'haxies' that run on "Application Enhancer" have more resemblance to viruses than Apple Cocoa apps.

The whole APE framework is a hack. It puts hooks into undocumented system features and people who use it have to in my opinion have a screw loose in their heads. Such is the danger of this rubbish framework.

You can't expect Apple to respect a framework which breaks all the Cocoa rules and tries to hack into the OS bypassing Apple's interface.

Unsanity does not comply with OS X programming rules/guidelines. They are a rogue company that produces the first marketable computer virus.
