This is during the evening peak time so I am still happy with the speed.

Touch wood, have had no trouble with Internet or phone service so far.

But the customer service is terrible, I have had to call a couple of times and had to wait forever and the staff are often new and don't know what is happening.

Heh, I just did this test at work and it is SO slow! I thought it seemed slower than my lovely new broadband at home. At home I get around 600 at the most for now, but I’m restricted by the ethernet cord for now. Until I get a wireless card for my PC I can’t try different locations for the modem.

At work my speed is 264. That is JUST in broadband territory, I think. STINGY!

No at 105 KB/s it would work out at 8192 / 105 = 78.01 seconds.

I was looking at line speed instead of download speed but I understand that now thanks to your help.

I know this may seem like a stupid question but is line speed "browsing speed" or "potential speed" (of the network)?

Mine's been good for the 2 days I've had it so far...consistently good, but today it's seemed to go weird twice. It said Cannot Find Server on all my windows and even though it said it was still connected and on UMTS, it wouldn't go to any page. I had to disconnect and then connect again and it was fine.

It's really windy here tonight...could that be why or does that have nothing at all to do with it?

Yeah, my bad, meant 512. Got confused with the download quota. So it's only 1/100th of the desired speed, not 1/200th. :-/

You really don't need to bother if you are getting around 600Kbs...
but basically it is mine and others desperate attempts to increase the strength of our signal...mine is simply the modem hung in front of a wok which seems to stabilise the signal by acting like a parabolic antenna, and minimises drop outs etc..
there is a technical reference for the woktanna but trust me, at this stage with the speeds you are reporting...you don't need it..
it will just set you off with another few hundred questions heheheheh :} :}

You would have been getting around 50 Kilobits per second which is around 5 Kilobytes per second

a standard 56k modem can theoretically transfer 56 Kilobits of data a second, this means that you can (again theoretically) transfer up to 7 Kilobytes a second (although to get a full 7k is near impossible due to the compression overhead).

I suspect my speed varies so wildly because I'm connecting to more than one cell during the download of the white fence photo. My modem is always flitting between HSDPA and UMTS anyway.

I'd have thought the signal in the CBD would have been better than some other places, but then maybe simplicity is the key ...

For a mere 2 second penalty (on the 3mb file) I'm going to put it back in the box and on my desk!

I sympathise but I'm not sure those slow speeds are affecting many people now. Doesn't really help those who are getting them but I think it is less likely to be a problem for new customers than some posts might suggest.

Indeed Robert The speed issues seem to be few and far between now judging from the posts here. Now if only we could speed up that porting process (day 26 from request date today). I know you said it may take to the end of the week to get through the Optus ports that were held up. What you needed to add was "or longer". I got my hopes up when both numbers were engaged on Friday only to find my wife had taken the phones off the hook while she had a rest. Grrrrrrrrr....

We got through them all, but that still means a minimum two week delay from the moment we push it into the 'system'. We'd love to accelerate porting, but its a very rigid process that is heavily regulated and manual.

I know I can lock the modem to UMTS but I don't want it to just say "searching" for hours then, if it can't get to the 3G tower for some reason. At least now I can use it, even though it is so painfully slow. (it's actually slower than my old dial up! That was always on 56, and this is 33! EEK!)
