From www.adsl2exchanges.com.a...hp?Exchange=SRTN

They report that Primus will be dslaming the somerton exchange 'soon'. Does anybody have any info. on this? I've checked the Primus website but I can't seem to find any info. on it though I haven't checked the site properly.

If any1 has any info. about how long it will take before Primus does dslam the exchange it would be greatly appreciated because I'm currently thinking of changing to an adsl1+ plan and there would be no point if the exchange were to be dslam'd in the next month or two.

Thanks.

i can only say, patience is a virtue.

but I believe that they are working on it.

Apparently more and more DSLAMS have been activated with ADSL2+ services every month.

It does look like full steam ahead.

but it will only apply to exchanges that are FIBRED.

I would strongly recommend calling Primus to find if your Somerton exchange is actually fibred or not.

if it is fibred, then they will be upgrading the dslam port cards over to ADSL2 complaint cards soon.

if it isn't fibred.......well, as Dirty Harry would say "your shit out of luck".

Hi , I made the same enquiry to their tech dept. a few days ago , answer was that it "should" be up and running by January 2008.

Hope this helps .

That's the best news I heard in a long time :)

I hope other providers will add their equipment as well since primus requires you to bundle your telephone with ADSL

maybe there is a grand plan for all of this after all! :-)

oh hey another somerton exchanger

I'm suprised they're doing it to be honest, given how small the exchange is in comparison to ones like Glenroy, Broadmeadows etc.

Can't wait for ADSL2 though: tinyurl.com/2dxa88 :)

I'd be guessing that you're not with iPrimus at the moment.

Check www.adsl2exchanges.com.au (choose the detailed summary option) to see if you're likely to be on a RIM/CMUX in a road-side cabinet - if you are then you'll be stuck with Telstra-wholesale'd ADSL.

Well the up-to-8Mbps plans are cheaper than 1.5Mbit plans, so you are getting what you pay for (which is a service faster than 1.5Mbit)

Your exchange will get upgraded soon, and when that happens you'll be able to get a little bit faster depending on how far you are from the exchange and the quality of your telephone service.

You could also switch to ADSL2+ when that upgrade happens and get a little bit more speed, as long as you have a compatible modem.

Due to the exchange being full, you wont get a faster speed from anyone else.

I'm still waiting on Vic Park, WA. It's been soon for a while.

I'm less than 100 meters from the exchange so no line attenuation problems for me (I hope).

I been with iprimus for 2 years now and i know the whole time they have stiched me.. they did one checkup at the start and said oh well lets just set this guy onto a 2000/512 when it should be 8000/512 what im paying for..but im here keep finding out people are getting almost upto 6000-8000syncs.. Great way to take care of there customers i tell ya.. paying $134 a month for 500kb faster then 1500.. Anyways now telstra has ADSL2 support on my exchange somerton so im leaving here for good.. I mean least what they could of done is lowered my price as im paying for 8000 which i never got.. Im pretty sure if i had a time i can set up a really good law suit.. as they kept promising me that they will bump up my speed once the exchange is fixed and so on.. BUT WHEN I SPOKE TO TELSTRA They clearly told me i am capable of being sync at 8000/512 not 2000/512.. just proves out how much iprimus cares about there customers.. at least they can refund me the 75% of the service that was advertised that i wasnt getting.. Does anyone agree?

Hi FiniX2k7

On exchanges where we have limited backhaul (bandwith to link the exchange to our network) we have to limit bandwidth into that exchange. If we do not limit the bandwidth for customers connected to such an exchange one customer would be able to download fast enough to use up the entire capasity of the exchange, leaving the Internet unsuable for all other customers.

The cost to put 2Mbps into an exchange that does not have fibre is about 20 times the cost we charge for a 2Mbps ADSL service, so as you can imagine we are working to fibre all of our exchanges as quickly as possible.

Once an exchange is upgraded to have a Fibre or similar high speed link customers can then be provided with faster speeds (like 8Mbps or ADSL2+)

The reason why this was a problem was because back when we first began installing DSLAMS the focus was getting customers off Telstra wholesale and onto our own Network for Telephony and ADSL, meaning we can sell the products cheaper, whilst also making a larger profit.

Because the focus was not on higher speed broadband, the sites for our equipment were chosen purely based on where we had sufficient existing customers to connect to our equipment. We did not factor in the availablility of Fibre connections as at the time using several E1 links was adequate.

This is no longer the case, due to the shift in market focus towards higher speed services like ADSL2+ and for existing exchanges we are working to get them connected to Fibre backhauls as quickly as possible.

Fortunatly for exchanges that were also chosen by other providers, we can purchase fibre from third party companies, but for exchanges (like Somerton) where we're the only non-telstra provider in there, we can not do this, and either have to install fibre ourselves or pay another provider to do it.

It is also worth noting, that we price our ADSL2+ and up-to-8Mbps plans in such a way as to account for the fact that many people will only obtain slightly faster than 1.5Mbit, so in such plans you do not pay for 8Mbit or 24Mbit, you pay for "Faster than 1.5Mbit" and the amount of data offered in the cap.

We will always consider such factors when pricing a plan, so that there is no significant loss of value to people whom through no fault of their own can not achieve the maximum theoretical speed of a product offered.

We appreciate that you're frustrated and extend our patience, personally I would recommend, if you are looking to reduce the cost of your bill you consider one of the DSL+ Plans until such time as your exchange can be upgraded to support higher speed ADSL.

Cheers

Rory

The main problem in particular with Somerton is that it has no space for anyone else to put a DSLAM in, so we're the only ones other than Telstra in there, and its not very close to any existing fibre loops, so it will be real hard to get fibre into there.

Jay might be able to give more updated info on what is happening with Somerton.

We're the only company besides Telstra with a DSLAM at SRTN, so there's nobody else with a fibre loop going anywhere near SRTN.

We're waiting on a 3rd party for the backhaul at the moment, the most recent estimation i've seen puts it around may-june for an expected install, however as far as i'm aware this is NOT a firm date, so it's subject to change.

i have mentioned it in another thread that OPTUS has a huge exchange less than 1km from Somerton (TELSTRA) exchange. i think that OPTUS is Campbellfield exchange.

so this means OPTUS exchange does not has fibre at all (sounds funny).

Would just mean that a provider needs to be found to get 1km of fibre laid.

Not as easy as it sounds... you have a truck roll, council approval, dig streets... plus most of the underground pipes are owned by Telstra so laying 3rd party fibre down some of them would be out of the question if Telstra chooses not to give access to them.

Primus is looking at June/July as Jay has advised but this is not concrete as Somerton is one of those exchanges that will be tricky...

Maybe you need to do what these people did :

ecoworldly.com/2008/05/1...the-sewer-system

the citizens, it seems, are having the last laugh as it has been reported this week that the town is to be the first in the UK to make use of the sewer system in a whole new way

Rather than rely on the rather un-environmentally friendly process of digging up swathes of countryside and road to lay cables, H2O Networks Ltd have been called in for the gig.

As is so often the case, simple ideas seem to have manifest benefits and using sewer systems to lay fibre optic cables is a case in point.

As already stated, there is no need to dig up roads.

Is it true that the primus max plan is the same as optus, in that it lets you go 300mb over your limit, and charges at 15c per meg?

The PrimusMAX 1500/256 2gig and 7gig plans caps to dial-up after the limit is exceeded. The only exception is the PrimusMAX 20gig plan which has excess usage charges at 15c per mb.

AIK,

Email your username to , if you are now being told 3-4 weeks there would have to be a reason behind this.

Thanks,

Mick, is it capped at a certain amount? and then shaped? ie like optus, which is capped at 2gig, though costs $300 extra?

Checked it for you.

The exchange is out of SSS ports but has plenty of Combo ports. So to give you ADSL2+ we need to migrate your line to ULL and then you'll have ADSL2+ this is where the order has gone over 7days.

Your account was signed up for phone and ADSL on 09/09/2008. The phone commenced billing to Primus on 13/09/2008 from your previous carrier so we were then able to put the line into migration as it became a Primus billed service. The migration is due to complete on 25/09/2008 which is when ADSL should be active and you have been assigned a port for ADSL2+.

Unfortunately it will be a few days longer, however in the end you'll have ADSL2+ with us :-)

Thanks,
Mick

Yes it should start from this time. Have your modem plugged in and when the DSL light goes solid you're right to go :-)

Well I am finally upgraded to adsl2, and i am getting about 12.5mb sync speed, still not what i expected, according to adsl2exchanges should be the full 24mbits, as I am fairly close to the exchange... I'm not sure if its my modem (Belkin 7633) that is causing this, I guess i'll knwo when my new netcomm modem arrives from primus...
