Anyboy remember the good 'ol days before youtube and Windows update and Steam and P2P, when your 10Gb usage would last you the entire month...

Anybody remember the good 'ol days when the billing month was actually based on the calandar month?

Anybody remember the good ol' days when Telstra's agreement said "Your connection may be shaped?", and indeed it was not always shaped instantly after you downloaded 10Gb...

Anybody remember the good ol' days when some months you could download hundreds of gigabytes as Telstra "forgot" to shape your connection?

I know that we "ponders" may have some of the better reliability and higher speeds of all the ISPs now, but does anyone still yearn for the old days?

Do you think that Telstra's BigPond has improved greatly over the years or has your internet experience gone downhill lately?

Telstra was better back then...
They were at the top of the game...

I'd suggest now, that they need to play catch up if they want to play ball!

Oh yes, back in 1999, we had a great cable service...

"A basic $65 a month for 100Mb of downloads and 5 Mb web site, going up to $170 for 500Mb monthly"

You have no idea what the "old" days were like.

I started on something like $80 for a 256kbps cable connection, although there was no usage limit. (Pay more for a 512Kbps connection).

Then they uncapped the speed, but limited us to 3GB for about $86, with charges for excess usage. Of course, uncapped speed was limited by the 10Mbps LAN port on my CM115 modem.

The stuff you described wasn't really THAT long ago..

But anyway. Does anyone remember back before the 10GB caps came in, Telstra said the usage meter wouldn't work over the weekend so everyone would be unmetered - this was supposedly them testing to see what their network could handle. Then about a week later they brought out the new plans.

I took a look at that old thread, it really brings back the memories:

"game set... im oepning kazaa!" - hahaha people still use that nowadays?

"i'm in COGS chat right now, and not many people are believing it, not even da GameOps." - oh yeah i remember the glory of COGS, those were the days...

"can you please explain what bit torrent is and where to get good stuff" - yeah. what is that bit torent thingo again?

but the best has to be Matt Regan's comment -
"Stupid Telstra for introducing a fabricated copyright protection device billing scheme. I take solice in the fact the technology moves only in one direction - foward. Online dvd stores and the like will be the end of this ridiculous per megabyte scandal - it is just a matter of time now."

Hmm, I'm not so sure...

Anyone remember when you had to buy your cable modem for $1,000 when you signed up for Telstra Cable?

Well, in a way, he's kinda right. Download movies purchased from Bigpond don't count towards your mega-ma-bytes ;)

Well he's right. Around the world, people have access to unlimited broadband. Australians do not.

Shame...shame...shame

I paid $500 for my CyberSURF cable modem at Dick Smith's in January 1999.
