It's unlocked

Just a word of caution in case Apple decides to release an iPhone firmware update, say... tomorrow —or next week or whenever: if you have a software-unlocked iPhone, don't update until it gets confirmed that the unlock is not affected. All software unlocks are vulnerable to Apple's firmware updates, say the Dev Team.

People are still charging rediculious amounts for the iPhone online.

Anyware between 600-1000 for the 8Gb NOT UNLOCKED.

The aussie dollar is really strong at the moment. If you buy the 8Gb model off apple it will set you back USD$399 which translates to AUD$477.

I might buy one, and get it sent to my friends address in the US then get her to send it to me.

At that price, and given that i need a new phone ( note to everyone, LG K800 Chocolate phone is crap ) I might just get one.

Hehe.

It's gonna be fun when Apple releases the legit iPhone here with 16 and 32 GB and many upgraded features for $500 AU :)

Those who bought them for $3000 Us on the first day must feel like royal asses now. They had the phone before anyone for like how long? 1 hour? ;)

Well, I think you'd expect to pay $800 for a phone like this. I mean comparing to other phones that are touch screen, and do simular features as the iphone, I say $800 is cheap. Only why apple was selling them for $499, was because they were partially subsidised.. eg. lock into 2 year contract.

I think it's a great deal.

I am getting my two iPhones off my Dad when I pick him up from the airport on Saturday :-)

I got him to get me 2 after I saw the prices on eBay, My second one is on there now with 2 days remaining at $820. Might even pay for the first one.

It worked out to be about $520 including Tax (Purchased in California)

Just got it working tonight fully with the software unlock!

Working with Telstra and Vodafone Prepaid NZ.

Hopefully won't be superseded by the UK one being announced Sept 18th:

Does anyone know whether it will be possible to be receive emails on an iPhone that is unlocked via GPRS? - Like on a BlackBerry?

Sorry if this an absolutely ridiculous question with an obvious answer...I really have no idea when it comes to Telecommunications

Cheers

Yeah it should work, just slowly.

The iPhone sees GPRS/EDGE as just another IP network

i agree that the iphone was worth the inital high price....not for its features, but for its convienance. no other device compares to the iphone. everything is just thier at your fingertips. ive had about 30 phones, and although they can do what the iphone does, they cant do it with style.

and if your going OMG how can they charge that about the iphone...let me just remind you of the prices of the Sony Ericson p900 when it was new (US $800)

I also bought from littlenewbie. Seems a tad expensive though. How long did your item take to arrive?

Doesn't the hardware mod require you to break you phone open? Isn't that kinda dangerous?

I picked up a software unlocked iPhone yesterday, works beautifully with Optus GPRS. Using a BlackBerry plan with unlimited GPRS data per month. Perfect solution and sure as hell beats the NextG plans.

Here's how to change from using the USA "EDGE" network to using Australian Optus GPRS:

1. Select "Settings" icon on the front screen
2. Select General | Network | EDGE
3. In the Advanced screen, change the APN to be "internet" (without quotes)
4. Remove username and password (leave them blank)

That's it! Now you will have email/web/YouTube and any other apps that need web access using GPRS when you're outside WiFi range.

I got my unit for $824 cash price. Was quite amusing - cladestine meetings at a cafe using code names etc. LOL! Pretty easy to find a seller if you look on the net. Worth every single cent IMHO, the unit is a revelation to use and the interface is just brilliant.

I sync all my email using a POP gateway and it all just works. How this was not released in Oz is beyond me, because even with GPRS I can surf full web pages with little lag. I only use YouTube or data-intensive apps when I am in a WiFi zone anyway. With GPRS I am guaranteed email and web access in 99% of the country, so it beats "3G" hands down (again IMHO).

Be wary with those unlimited Blackberry plans.
At least do some reading up on how they work, I seem to recall reading the iPhone + a Blackberry plan can spell trouble.

yeah... I dunno why people are paying these ridiculous prices when you can just order one straight from the USA for about $608 or less, shipping included (from MacPro online store). Maybe I should start selling iPhones on eBay or something... if I was based in the US, I definitely would be selling them, people must be making a killing!

I'm on a 1.1.1 iPhone, 8GB. Had it for about 6 weeks or so now... Vodafone prepaid user. No EDGE/GPRS traffic (costs too much for me, $1 for 5 minutes).

Upgraded from 1.0.2 and unlocked using a Mac.

Running 1.1.1 on Vodaphone.

Independence and AnySIM.

The whole downgrade followed by upgrade is a bit of a drag but hey, it's free.

Can I just ask: how can you get an iPhone working on a prepaid Vodafone or Virgin plan? I thought you needed a SIM card, and I thought the iPhone didn't have that slot for it. Am I mistaken in believing this?

No, six months actually. And in a technical world - six months is a God's age!

I paid 1000 for mine unlocked, and it hasn't missed a beat. Considering it gives me full synched access to my addresses and iCal (all I ever needed), I would have paid 3k with no issues whatsoever. When Telptusgin Mobile releases a new one in Oz next year (April), I'll get another.

One very happy customer, whatever the price.

an apple employee i served once promised me that of ll things it most definately wont be telstra

he made some refference to when the company first criticised apple when the iphone project was announced, then he made some passing remark about how elephants never forget

unfortunately i am none the wiser as to who is actually going to be running the iphone in aus..
the hot rumour i heard ( which who knows if this one can be verified) was that optus's network was soon to be edge..

Aah yes. www.smh.com.au/news/bizt...71405363291.html ... But then there was a news article out a few days ago saying that Telstra was in talks with Apple or something.

Who knows. Personally I think it's going to be Optus or Telstra, no 3G. If it's coming as soon as April I'm reckoning that it'll still be 8Gb but later in 08 a 16Gb will arrive (it's a big internal redesign unless 16Gb flash's come down in price). Initially I was skeptical about getting an 8Gb iPhone but I figured 8Gb certainly holds enough for me and it has the unique ability to make and receive calls :-) I just wish Auspost would hurry up and deliver it!

I've been giving this some punditory thought lately.

I agree with the no 3G. That's tech that is actually useless to mobile operators who aren't supporting video calls and the iPhone doesn't do that and frankly neither do people who have phones that are capable of it. What is worse is that operators have to sacrifice money earning Internet kilobits to money losing video playout megabits that they earn stuff-all for. Video on 3G is about 99% discounts to the Internet usage price not about earning money for mobile operators.

I think 8GB vs 16GB is a bit of "whatever". The iPhone will continue to get bumps in storage as the vendors increase die density. Moore's law will continue to apply to flash memory for some time to come.

I agree with EDGE. It's a simple upgrade to GPRS and at the end of the day the goal is earning the highest revenue from your network. This is the flip side to the 3G point.

The target market is something that Apple have had time to study and they know exactly how hard this is going to go off in Australia, gadget central.

Apple will do the deal with the carrier who will pay them the largest share of the revenue from the largest addressable market. That's not likely to be Telstra because Telstra are hellbent on moving customers over to NextG, a 3G network operating on a frequency that is only used in one other country. Apple aren't going to ensure hardware support for one carrier in one market. No, you design a product to work across the largest practical market footprint. I don't see iPhone being a big seller outside of capital cities but I see it being insanely popular anywhere there are lots of people with lots of disposable cash. I recall pundits saying that a 3G iphone was essential for tackling the European market because Europe is so switched on to 3G. Well Europe invented GSM and they aren't finished with it yet. EDGE bridges the gap between regional users on GSM and city users on 3G on global frequencies which is capital city only (forget Telstra's access to 3's 2100 network because they pay 3 for that access).

Optus have a large rural and regional GSM network so my guess is Optus as the carrier.

See Gizmodo from January for a European 3G example: gizmodo.com/gadgets/macw...oming-227850.php

Telstra aren't good at partnerships (I can't think of a successful one), have a history of trashing their reseller relationships (CDMA shutdown, vISP in a box shutdown, multiple ACCC competition notices) and don't like ideas that they can't claim are their's (FTTN has been flogged to death because it's seen to be Sol's idea while HFC has been swinging in the breeze all along). Telstra doing iPhone isn't going to happen because Telstra don't know how to share. In fact the only handset deals they have done in recent times are with Brightstar and they don't handle Apple's distribution:
