Feeling whimsical I went to the local IT chain yesterday and purchased myself an internet radio. Apparently it's brand new. (and "X" hundred dollars)

SAGEM MyDu@L Radio700
www.sagem.com/index.php?id=1238&L=0

So, it slices, it dices ... WiFi, internet radio, USB, media shares etc, FM radio ... etc

But ... the manual that comes with it is patchy to say the least. Several important things are mentioned in passing without explanation. Vtuner, Firmware upgrades ... etc

I figured they'd have some sort of online support forum or FAQ service that went beyond the basic manual. Naively. I couldn't even find an email address on the site. The most "support" is to link to the manual. On an irrelevant part of the site there's a query form, but it refuses to work. There's a phone number in Sydney I might call tomorrow, but I don't have high hopes.

So ... am I the only person in the world who owns one of these? I'm hoping that down the track I'll be able to customise it, to improve it. It's a cool idea.

Don't get me wrong - it does work and is preset with heaps of radio stations from around the world. Maybe most people would be happy with that, but I want more!

Are you the only person, ... Well I own one for now but I am seriously thinking of taking it back and asking for a refund.

I am having the same problem with the manual and support as you. Support - what support.

From the manual, it claims to be able to play the MP3 files on my pc (via windows media player). It only seems to be able to find the WMV files.

vtuner seems to be some form of internet radio directory (google is your friend).

From their home page (www.sagem.com) there is a link to planet sagem (www.planetsagem.com) which is allegedly their support website. However, after signing up, and attempting to join their forum page, I am told that "Sorry, this page is not compatible with your mobile"

It lists radio stations, and I get the ABC stations I am after fine. However, I am also after Canada radio (CBC radio one). My pc can get these fine, but the 'radio' wont access them.

After about 45 minutes I have found a phone number in australia. I'll call them tomorrow, and see how it goes.

Hi there,
after all this time I didn't expect to see anyone reply to my post, but I guess these things are still getting flogged in the stores so someone must be buying them.

I'm not sure about other places, but where I bought mine you can't get a refund unless it's unopened or already broken. (I researched this within a day).

Anyhooo I did get in touch with the Sagem support in Sydney. It sounds like a tiny regional office, and they didn't have anything exciting to tell me.

I still use the Sagem Internet Radio quite often, but I wish I could programme in my own stations. Since it's secretly using this Vtuner site, you're not connecting to the radio stations' sites directly, so you can have problems accessing stations that you have no trouble accessing via your computer. Also my ISP lets you connect to some internet radio for free (unmetered), but I presume accessing the same stations via the Sagem/Vtuner will be metered.

Yep, you can tune your Sagem radio into normal FM radio - we often use it with our ipod "i-trip" (it's not just for the car!)

I'm hoping some boffin will take it upon themselves to work out some hack that allows us to use our own list of radio stations. I guess I'm kicking myself I didn't wait for a Nabaztag (though perhaps they have hidden flaws too)

After seeing them advertised on TV, I considered purchasing one, but I could never find one at the local DM Powerhouse. After reading this thread though I'm not sure now... I don't like the sound of the Vtuner software. Asus have come up with a new player, but it's about $60 more than the Sagem.

Hi Glass

I put a post in the Gadgets area forum-replies.cfm?t=922924#r1 the other day asking some questions about this radio, it must have been the worng area as I have not had any replies.

One of the things I would like to know about the Sagem radio is :- can it listen to AM radio stations 2UE and 2GB in Sydney Australia?

I recently bought an Asus product similar to the Sagem after being told it could work with any audio stream. They said if it is not listed in its internal memory that you can just put in the URL and it will work - well it won't, and further more they will not take it back.

Could you check and see if these radio stations are listed in your radio, and if not can they be manually entered into its list of stations?

The URLs that I have been given by the radio station digital department and others in Whirlpool are:-

mms://streaming.mytalk.com.au/2ue

and

mms://203.47.33.152/Radio2gb

Looking forward to your replies and help - thanks in advance,

If something does not do what it is advertised to do, then you are well within your rights to return it.

So, some final answers following right here...

The current firmware version only allows streaming from stations listed on vtuner.com. No update is released yet, but you can flash the firmware via the webinterface (login is admin/admin) or USB port later.

You *can* play files from a media sharing PC in your network via WMP11, at least I got it work. But you cannot yet play files from the wi-fi radio through your PC yet. I hope browsing any network sharing devices like NAT harddisks will be supported soon!

The device crashes lots of times though. I have to restart it very often because sometimes the mp3 output sound becomes a little crappy (sounds like broken streams/files), using USB devices as well as with streaming radio stations.

The wi-fi interface loses connections to my router about every 15 minutes (whyever?)...

Those who'd like to use the radio device for alarm function should be aware of all this. You'll never wake up from not working audio sources (=> no sound or crappy buzzer instead)!

The last thing is the remote control menu. It is not yet user-friendly because it stops playback when switching from one audio source to another (e.g. from USB device to IP radio). Furthermore there is no menu key and browsing files from connected devices is very complicated with many files because you can just use the up/down arrows. With 100 files in one directory you will have to press down/up 50times in worst case. And you will have to wait for the device to return to the clock view to be able to view the current playback information (takes about a minute I guess).

Well I hope there will be a bunch of updates in time. You may ask me for further details. I still recommend the idea behind this tiny thingy! :)

PS.: You *will* want to connect an external sound output device. The 2x2W output crushes your ears! (especially on max. volume)

Well if you go to the Vtuner site www.vtuner.com , you can search on what stations are available. It tells me that both 2ue and 2gb are available. However, I could only find 2gb on my sagem radio. There is no category "Talk" available and it doesn't appear under "News Talk".

(There's no way to ask the Sagem Radio to search for a radio station by name - you have to navigate through menus)

As a few of us have said, you can't set up stations that aren't on VTuner - but since it gets the list from the VTuner site, there might be some way you can ask VTuner to supply your favourite station. If you could add your own stations, that would cut out the middle-man VTuner !

I have to say that I don't recall any problems connecting to my Wi-Fi - most of my connection problems are station-specific

it must have been the worng area as I have not had any replies.

Ummm I dunno ... I think it's more because no one here has bought these things.

The sneaky thing about this device is that the box/manual isn't very informative & store guys didn't know. I guess I was feeling whimsical that day and after finding no info, just assumed that you could enter your own stations.

I shouted myself one of these for xmas, purely because I wanted to stream mp3s from my computer to my stereo. In concept the unit is great, if not a bit clunky to use as noted by a couple of other posts.

However, when streaming from my computer via my wireless router, it keeps losing the connection, after somewhere between 15 mins and 30 mins. I note you had the same problem. Have you got to the bottom of this yet? I'm using WMP11, and also tried Windows Media Connect. Would be great of they used an open source code which could then be turned into something great by the open source community.

The Age has a review of 4 internet radios. They didn't mention the Sagem though.

www.theage.com.au/news/r...age#contentSwap1

Intriguingly they say this:

You can add your own stations to the radio's extensive roster but the process is complicated: sometimes you need to enter a long and cumbersome web address using just a few buttons, or you must submit the station's details to a website that acts as an online directory from which the radio downloads its list of stations.

... but they don't hint at which radio does what. I guess the Sagem is one of those that requires you to "submit to a website".

Nor did the paper mention the Victorian-designed and -prized Torian InFusion, sold through DSE.

I picked one up yesterday at their Forster, NSW, store and paid $91 for it - it was marked down from $229.

Spent three hours setting up the intriguing device, but although it connected to my network without trouble on either manual or DHCP-provided setting (all I needed to give it is the SSID and the WEP shared key), the device did NOT connect to the station search server! It regularly came up with "Service is busy - try again later".

Since there were other little flaws (it will NOT accept a year past 2006 - year of manufacture?) and a miserable battery life (2 h max in iRadio mode), I will return it for a refund when I next get into town...

I should admit that I spent another 2 hours trying to track down its support site and downloading new software and documentation, as well as trying to register at Torian Wireless' rather flaky new Imiro (?) website (it wouldn't accept e-mail or country!)...

Then you can't just reflash the device from your PC via the USB link, but have to put the downloaded software onto an SD card and put that in the InFusion etc. etc. - talk about tedious!

All in all: the thing 'seemed like a good idea at the time' :-)

Cheers,

LMH

Since resolving to do just that, I couldn't resist the urge to go through the whole process of re-flashing the thingo with the latest software version (2.1.0) and retrieving a token from it to enter it into the miRoamer database, which at leasdt got rid of the date error and the 'server busy' taunt...

The InFusion is still too tedious to use, too many of the 'found' internet radio channels return a 'streaming error' message or won't start playing, even after announcing they're 'buffering x%, and other hassles.

Sorry guys, it works, after a fashion, but I prefer to listen on my PC if that's all you can come up with!

I am disappointed in the device. Currently I am unable to add any new internet radio station to the device. My current favourites work OK, but there was an automated update a little while ago, which made some things better (like if you turn the internet radio off and back on, you start up on the last listened to station), but ...

For those who purchased this radio, there is meant to be a website sagem.vtuner.com to register your sagem device to allow it to work again, but I could not follow the required instructions.

In essence, this device seems to be for those who want to be on the bleeding edge (and occasionally get cut)

Hi, I'm from Czech republic and bought this gadget a couple of days ago in Germany under the name MEDION. Medion is producing exactly the same unit only in black color see this >

www.connect.de/themen_sp...5651_152843.html

There is a possibility to add your own stations to the internet stations list in the unit via sagem.vtuner.com, but till now it isn't properly working. See my post from german forum :

quoting my post from 1.5.2008 >
With regard to non-functional sagem.vtuner.com, I am in contact with some guy from vtuner and today I noticed in my Medion unit two new groups in station list called "Favourite" and "My Added Stations". Unfortunatelly these groups are still empty, although I have some stations in Favourites and My Added Stations on sagem.vtuner.com. Anyway it seems that they are working on correct changeover between the web administration and our Sagem/Medion units.

edit 2.5.2008 at 10am - empty folders "Favourites" and "My Added Stations" are gone. Hope to see them soon again in my unit

In the meantime, for those of you which are owners of Asus WL routers as Asus WL-500g, Deluxe, WL-700hd etc..., I recommend to use Twonky Server for these units. Personally I am using Twonky server on my Asus WL-500gDeluxe with autostart from connected flash disk. S/N from supplied CD to your unit is valid also for this kind of Twonky server!

You can download it here :
www.twonkyvis.../TM4Technicians.html

for Asus wl-500gDeluxe use Asus WL-HD 2.5. It is an autoinstal package.
First of all, use the latest firmware from Oleg from here:
oleg.wl500g.info

You have to connect some flash disk into your device, before installing of twonky server. Read installation instruction enclosed in the package. For me it works without any problem.

Regards from Prague!

And this is the last answer from vTuner team:

quoting my original post from 6.5.2008 >

It seems that vTuner team is still working on correct changeover between "sagem.vtuner.com" Favourites + My Added Stations folders and SAGEM/MEDION units.

quoting e-mail from vTuner
.................................. .

We are still trying to figure out what may be wrong here. Sorry is taking us so long.

Greetings from New York,
Don
vTuner
.................................. .

Personally, I truly hope that this issue will be solved very soon.

But even now you can add your own internet stations to your Sagem/Medion units. Just use TWONKY server on your computer or better on some NAS equipment. (please see my previous post about Asus WL routers and Flash disk) You can add your own internet stations in .m3u playlist which is recognized by Twonky software. This way is quite simple and really works!

I recently came back from my short holiday and sagem.vtuner.com is working for me! There are new groups in my station list "My Favourites" and "My Added Stations". I can see all my added stations in my Medion-Sagem internet radio. Coool.
What about you ?

BTW: I found another clon of Sagem-Medion units in Taywan or maybe it is an original producer ? More information soon.

Whimsically too, I picked one up today, cheap $99 as now is apparently discontinued at Harris Technology. Maybe they have had too many problems. The Installation guide is almost useless.

For the Google searchers in similar pain to me we are talking about the Sagem MyDu@l Radio 700 or My Dual Radio 700.

The device finds my network but wont find any Internet radio stations. After tweaking and retrying with IP, Gateway and DNS addresses, the device when searching for stations stubbornly returns this error message every time:

Failed to Lookup DNS Press OK to continue. Then of course nothing.

Anyone got any tips?

EDIT UPDATE 2 hours later Some Success.

I logged on to the vtuner website. sagem.vtuner.com/setupap...ns/StartPage.asp

You need to log in with your unique ID number. This is how: from the site:

About the Dual Radio ID #

The ID # is a unique name that identifies your device. It consists of a series of numbers and letters.
The ID # is available by navigating the menus on your device.

How to login:
1. Retrieve your ID #

1. Navigate to the Internet Radio menu, and click the right arrow
2. Navigate to the Help menu, and click the right arrow
3. The second item listed is your ID#
*(This didn't work for me so I Used the MAC 12 digit number on the sticker under the unit which worked a treat.)

2. Login to the sagem.vtuner.com Web site.

Enter your ID # in the 'Sign in with your ID #' area, then click the 'Go' button.

My internet radio only started to work after I had logged on then logged off again.

I'm much happier now. And there is a place there to add your own stations. The favourites I added at the vtuner site have not appeared on my device.. I'm hoping they will magically appear.

The installation guide barely refers to the vtuner site. What were they thinking?

I got mine on Friday for my birthday, and yes, whilst the menu especially navigating music files and folders on my pc is a little clunky, quality wise I'm very impressed with this unit. The fact that I downloaded the manual a month ago might have helped.
As mentioned plugging in external speakers or using the rca outputs into another amp is a good idea.
Not sure what radio stations people are looking for which aren't on the vtuner website but for me, everything I wanted was there.
I'd recommend it.

have a read of the manual that was on the Sagem CD. It shows how to share your windows media player library with the Sagem... basically twonky does the same thing.

For some reason when I open my .m3u files on the Sagem via twonky they work.
When I opened them via WMP on the Sagem, they just came up blank.

Have had the Sagem MyDu@l Radio700 since last year. It has worked from day one, including streaming from my PC using WMP11.

I have found that typically only half the stations that I want to access will play. Presumably the others are the wrong format (Realaudio).

Seeing sagem.vtuner.com mentioned in this thread I went and had a look as I had not heard of it before. I had looked at vtuner.com in the past but never found it to add much to the whole experience. Despite the incorrect instructions on how to log in, I also managed to get in to sagem.vtuner.com using the device's MAC address. Now that I'm in and created a user account I am wondering what is the point? It does allow you to add in new stations but it doesn't seem to link in with my physical device in any way. Perhaps it is a works in progress? Ideally the personalisation done on the website would be reflected in the physical device. This would save all the faffing around with the clunky menus on the device. I also notice that in the screen that allows you to add new stations you can put in ones that are Realaudio format. What's the point of this? The website clearly points out that these won't work.

I will check from time-to-time to see if changes are made. It could potentially be very useful in enhancing the internet radio experience.

Got one for my birthday thinking that it would be a nice device to listen to in the kitchen. What a pain!

I have wireless and it just won't authenticate using WPA2-PSK (TKIP) or (AES). Droping it down to WEP and no security its fine.

My Netgear DG834N router issues ip addresses to my 2 other kids laptops fine, so I know that the setup is ok. It just seems that it doesn't negotiate this authentication very well. I have changed channel and ensured that my router is set to 802.11b and g, as have had issues in the past with the router running at 802.11n (270MBPS)

As I cannot find any support/image files to flash the unit with, I am pretty hacked off with the device and don't really want to drop my wireless security to WEP run this device. Any ideas would be appreciated.

It works fine on the ethernet cable though, however my kitchen is a bit too far to run that and a cable running across the floor is not great!

Cheers

I picked one up last week. At $99 it's a steal. My other one, Roku Soundbridge, is nice but only works with the audio system. The Sagem sits on the kitchen counter.

Wireless configuration was quick, even with WPA - so I am not complaining.

I agree that the manual is useless and the vtuner site isn't too flash either. But with the help from this topic got it going and added a number of sites such as 2Day FM.

Hi All,

Got a SAGEM MyDu@L Radio700 the other week, works really well, setup on my ADSL (IINET) with Belkin wireless router was quite painless.

Vtuner site acccess was as expected(?) through the SAGEM. Setting up personalised list through web site FAILED just like everyone else?

I sent email to vtuner and got the following email reply which may be of interest.

---------------------------------- -----------------------------
Hi Ralf,

You have full vTuner service on your DualRadio and can search for and launch Internet radio stations at any time. But we (i.e., our servers) do not receive your MAC Address and know about your unit until after the first time you try Internet radio/vTuner on your unit. When you try Internet radio on your DualRadio be sure you have an Internet connection, then select Internet Radio/vTuner and proceed to browse and play stations. You should then be able to go to the sagem.vtuner.com website and we should recognize your MAC Address. The favorites you set on the website should appear immediately on the device (click on "Internet Radio" then "Web Favourites").

If the MAC Address is still not recognized:
Some units incorrectly register on our servers. In these cases. our sagem.vtuner.com website does not then recognize your MAC Address. A firmware upgrade will be prepared to resolve this issue. Please contact Sagem support for information about this firmware update. You will be able to use the full vTuner service on the Dual Radio but you will not be able to create a login account to manage your content on the sagem.vtuner.com website until after Sagem offers a firmware upgrade.

Best Regards,
Don

When I get a SAGEM reply I will post it.

Hi
I picked up one at HT today for $99...damn im glad I googled it before paying $199 at DSE.
Neway...so far so good. It was just what I was looking for in a bedside alarm-clock that does internet radio...and more. Most of my regular stations (BBC etc) were already in the catalogue when I searched the first time. However, there are two issues I would like help with:

1) How do I upgrade the firmware? OK, I think I could figger out how to do it, but where is a link to the latest version?

2) I created an account on the sagem.vtuner website, and created some folders and added some podcasts (im really happy they have podcasts...now I can listen to John C. Dvorak daily tech5!). However, it doesnt appear on my device. I dont have a 'web folders' like some other posts suggest...im hoping the firmware will fix this.

Good news... I got my WIFI radio working after playing around with it for 7 days, cableless. Cant remember what I did, except put in a WEN number assuming it is Network Key number yesterday, but still not working, so I gave up to try agen another time.

But when I tried today, for some reason it worked with the stations I had in favourites (I have added more now), maybe it needed a few minutes to configure yesterday, thus the reason not werking.

I'll take to my bedroom later on so I can listen to it while in bed at night, the reason I got the unit.

Late note... for some reason just now, it cut out after about 30 minutes... so I went back to favourites and re-selected the station I was listening to and it came back on. I then checked the sleep function setting and thats was "off", so not to sure what went on.

Will keep you update with any pros or cons.

Hi
Got an email yesterday from Sagem UK with an attached ZIP file containing a firmware update. In a rush, I installed it via USB...however without checking what my current firmware was. It said it updated it...but from what to what? Can anyone else say what firmware their original unit had?
Also I still cannot my 'we folder' on vtuner...so not much of an upgrade..

I have 2 Sagem Mydual Radio700 Wi-Fi radio's with the above firmware, but today something strange happened. While selecting an internet station, a previously unseen menu appeared giving the option to switch auto clock display on or off. i selected off and now that radio constantly displays track metadata instead of the usual clock. That menu option is not documented in the user guide and I cannot get it to appear again. Has anyone any info on how to get into this menu again? Thanks.

I went out and armed with a print out of Harris Technology's page I managed to price match with the local Disk Smith Powerhouse. I got the last unit in the store, but it was a display unit. DSPH weren't willing to discount it more from the $179 they had it so I took it anyway.

I've set it up just now, the unit's found my network, connected to it OK however... whenever I try to access Internet radio, it seraches, but then comes back with a can't find IP error. When I check the network setup, the IP address is 0.0.0.0, with my SSID and my channel. The troubleshooting says there is no DNS response, and to try pinging the IP address of the DNS- how do I do that from the radio? Any suggestions?

Edit: and I signed up at sagem.vtuner.com, thinking perhaps I needed the website to start talking to my device, like my Roku Soundbridge needs to access the Roku site to access my favourites- but no dice there.

Do you have mac address filtering on, or WEP or WPA? That could explain your problem. I assume you've rebooted the radio.

I would try getting it to work on ethernet first. Once this is working to your satisfaction then you can concentrate on the wifi.

Casting my mind back I think I had problems with the upper case / lower case / numerics / length of my WPA password. Once I figured this out it has been smooth sailing ever since.

I did that, worked perfectly, got my favourite stations tuned in. And then...

That was the key- my WPA-PSK password was all in upper case. Once I worked out that there was lower case input, I retyped the password, and it connected! It's now in my bedroom, replacing my current clock radio. Even on FM, the reception is much better than even my hi-fi.

megamic.. any news on the firmware update?

me to sagem:
Thanks for the reply and the new firmware. However, I still don't seem to
be able to access my 'web folders' on the vtuner website, where I can
create folders with radio stations and podcasts that don't otherwise appear
on the Station List on the MyDu@l 700. Can you inquire if they are working
on adding this functionality in a future firmware update?

sagem to me:
Good afternoon, Mike

My experts reliably inform me they are indeed working as we speak on adding
this functionality (but were unable to give me an ETA for its arrival).

Please do not hesitate to contact us, should you require further
information.

Kind Regards, Steve

I'm keen to get one of these, but all I want it for is to listen to the iiNet/3FL streams. Has anyone got it working with these?

not without some software running on your desktop/server, like twonky.
I listen to all the iinet/3fl radio streams this way.. I have DI.FM set as my alarm :)

I got that menu too! It was when I selected an FM radio station. After I got that and it started playing I got extra options, I was looking at the sleep function, but when I was scrolling through I think I found that clock display menu entry you were talking about. So I think if you select a station and start playing, left arrow to go back tot he previous page.

Hi All,

I think I may have found a bug then.

I have a NETGEAR DG834N which can run wireless at 270MBPS, (802.11n).

When the sagem tries to Authenticate and connect it fails unless I drop the mode to 802.11g. IP Address will not renew staying at 0.0.0.0

The authentication method stays the same which is WPA2-PSK(AES) So authentication mode isn't the problem.

Guess I need a firmware upgrade or trawl through the small print to see if 802.11n is supported.

Cheers – hope this helps people struggling. Problem is now I have to run my router at a lower speed to help this device – pants.............. My laptop download speeds will suffer as a result.
