Today bought Tevion Hi-Fi from Aldi (Model CD5 8500, $199). Everything seemed to be working ok at first. But when it was turned on again a few hours later, both speakers started to make a loud buzzing noise, even when the volume was turned down to zero. Also, from the back of the stereo, there was a fan-like noise (like a PC fan) when the buzzing was occuring. After turning the stereo off and on a few times (unplugging power cord), the buzzing has gone, as well as the fan-like noise. Anyone else bought similar Tevion stuff and had this sort of problem ? I think I'll try to return this tomorrow, as what has happened doesn't inspire confidence.

I've bought a few Tevion things off Aldi - got a couple of 51cm tv's that I had to return, but my parents got one and it was fine. I have the 68cm widescreen which is also fine, and digital tuner.

The important thing is, Aldi will either refund or swap - your choice, and no hassles.

Yeah, I don't think I would have bought it in the first place if I hadn't read about that before. Thanks for the reassurance. The buzzing started up again, so it's going back for a refund.

Mine did exactly the same as yours (buzzing sound from speakers) after turning on the 2nd time. turned it off again, and it has fixed itself for now. Has a 12 month guarantee so I'll take the risk, as it is a good package for the money, with decent sound and reasonable bass. The fan like noise must be some sort of fan to cool the internal amp, as I can hear a fan when turning down the volume.

I disagree. I've bought plenty of Aldi/Tevion products and found they are of good quality and good value.

We have this exact unit and haven't had any issues. Seems loud enough for it's size, and I like the USB port. Can put music and/or TV and movies onto my thumb drive and a few seconds later be listening/watching on the TV. Overall not a bad system for $200.

What's the sound quality like? All tinny and horrible? Or is it okay?

I've tended to avoid these low-end systems because they just annoy me after a while from the poor sound quality and muddy, bass.

Although I rarely buy from Aldi and I haven't bought an electrical goods from there, I found out that one of my digital cameras were sold under "Tevion" brand for a fraction of price that I paid for.

It appears that they just 'outsource' the manufacturing to a decent, if not reputable manufacturer. At the end of the day, they don't spend money on advertising on the brand Tevion, so they can cut the cost a lot.

It's not bad at all. You have to remember though that it is a $200 system. Nothing to complain about. Sounds good on movies and my other half has no problems turning up V2 during the day.

I have a HAAZ electic TV purchased from aldi at least 5 or 6 years ago, and its been great still going very strong!
My parents have a small Tevion tv which has lasted almost the same amount of time, I would say most aldi stuff seems to be of pretty good quality.

Tevion is like all Aldi items. Some people like the value and have no issues, some have issues from the beginning. I have a standalone Tevion MPEG4 dvd player for the boys play room hooked up to a 34cm Tevion TV and the Tevion with USB surround sound in the lounge. Very happy with all of them.

wonderhuman states ......

...... I found out that one of my digital cameras were sold under "Tevion" brand for a fraction of price that I paid for.

Very early in the life of Aldi in Aus. they brought out a 3.5MP digital cam. for AUD$399. I decided to do some research on this cam. and was amazed to find that it was badge engineered, and underneath its skirt was a well know digital cam. in every sense of the word.

This cam. outstripped another well know cam. named Nikon in a review about 3/4 yrs. ago.

I have bought electrical items from Aldi, returned some and kept others. They have a very good return policy re: their products - this is one thing that I have been impressed re: goods from Aldi.

So it has a video out? How do you watch the videos from putting the usb thumb drive into the stereo?

I transfer the DivX file from my computer to my thumb drive. I the plug the thumb drive into the USB port on the front of the unit and switch it to DVD mode. It detects the USB drive and away we go. Also works for MP3 and Piture files. Very quick and easy.

The only crap is your claim. LOL

More than pleased with my Aldi Tevion 68cm WS CRT TV and the Tevion VCR plus many other items from them.

The OP should take the Hi-Fi back for a refund or swap to another unit.

ALDI = crap

So that ridiculous claim is everything they sell from food to hardware?

Some great bargains to be had if you know what you are doing!

Hi, so just to confirm, there is a Video out RCA socket so you can plug it into the TV Video In, so the picture comes from the Hifi stereo to the TV? Is that correct?

It's a DVD Surround Sound System with a USB port as well. You can connect via RCA, component and S-Video I believe.

My setup goes
Foxtel IQ -> Tevion DVD Surround Sound -> TV
That way I always get the better quality sound from Foxtel by running it through the surround sound unit.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, I think the system you have must be different to the one I bought. Mine was just a hi-fi system - I don't think it played DVDs. It had a 5 stacker CD tray, with AM/FM tuner, USB port, but no video out as far as I could see. It only had two speakers.

But your system sounds quite good - I'll keep a lookout for it next time.

It appears I am the one who is mistaken. I thought we were talking about the $199 DVD Surround Sound system. My apologies. However, it is quite a good system. Can't say anything about the 2 speaker system though. My apologies.

haha, no worries.

Out of interest, can you post a pic of the DVD surround system you have, how long ago was it on sale at Aldi?

The Tevion 19" monitor I bought several years ago has a Samsung sticker on it.
Has been a great monitor.
Some of their mp3 players were also identical to the samsung players, they also stocked mp3 player speakers for $30 which were the same as the Ministry Of Sound branded ones being sold by shops like DSE and Harvey Normans for $99

People who say Aldi is crap are usually quite snobby and dont want to be seen paying low low prices for the non name brands

Purchases I have made
2 aldi computers medion
1 aldi laptop medion
1 aldi camera treveller
1 mouse, 1 keyboard
17 inch flatscreen monitor (from memory medion.. its not here)
graphics pad ("")
19 inch dvd/tv combo Tevion

im sure ive picked up some other Tevion stuff but cant remember

only had 1 issue and that was my camera wouldnt connect to my computer.. I didnt even bother about exchanging it, though I easily could have it, it really was no issue to me.

I have seen people go in to aldi and ask for a refund/exchange, saying their product was faulty AND admitting they have no experience with these type of items (old people who are alittle bit out of touch) and have had the item either refunded or exchanged in no time at all, no questions ask. So yeah I will back up aldi 100%
and save a bit of cash at the same time :D

I don't have to tell you what to expect from any $10 pair of speakers, regardless of brand. I've got a few Tevion products and haven't had an issue with them at all.

I bought them for a 7 year old PC that needed set set of speakers, I expected the quality to be bad but not for them to break in 2 minutes.

I assume you took them back for full refund. I find everything that Aldi sells exactly the same. Some things I like, some I don't. I don't know until I've tried it though. We do about 80% of our weekly shop at Aldi. Some things, Tim Tams for instance, can never be properly replicated so must be purchased from Coles/Woolies.
