Pity you don't offer plans without phone bundling as I would probably be interested in moving some of my customers over to your plans.

Just out of interest where is the POP that these ports connect to ?
IE: one pop for all users regardless of state or do you have POP's in each state ?

I can't use Netspace as they have all their ADSL 2+ customers connected to a VIC pop, this would add extra latency for users outside of VIC for VPN and RDP/VNC sessions.

Maybe down the track but at this stage we are not offering ADSL2+ over SSS. They are offered more along the lines of Optus DSL Direct. It is also dependant on the card at the exchange.

There is a POP per state, with the exception of NT which uses the Brisbane POP.

Unfortunately Williamstown exchange doesn't have a Primus DSLAM at all. We can only provide services upto 1.5mb... soon it will be 8000 when Telstra negotiations finish.

Primus only has a DSLAM in Belmont and Geelong at this stage.

It seems as though the new plans have removed peak / off peak allowances for anything higher than the starter pack with DSL2+.

Is this a short term thing, due to change when the new BRAS systems are all up and running, or is this final ?

Edit: Didnt see that the star pointed to a term that was hidden away neatly under the "things you should know about dsl2+" link.

* On these plans one third of monthly data allowance is available during peak period (noon to midnight) and two thirds during off peak (midnight to noon).

Nevermind :)

wrong!, if you read the fineprint it clearly states that 1 third is on peak and 2 thirds are offpeak

At this stage there is no peak and off peak... When the BRAS updates happen, which now we are just waiting on Perth then it will kick in...

But we advertise the plan as peak/off peak.

I can't find where on the website that says the ADSL2+ plans are all peak/offpeak, I assume that's what the little "*" are for the higher plans, but there's no explanation for them. Except at the bottom of the page where it says an * means 9.95 postage and handling applies

It's hidden right in the middle of the Things you should know about iPrimus Broadband 2+: section, where it's really hard to see. At the moment that's fine, since Primus isn't charging on/off peak, but when it comes into force, I sure hope Primus makes that more obvious (like on the DSL Plus page), or you're going to end up with hundred of annoyed customers.

Mick, here's an interesting question - I noticed that Primus is only offering ADSL2+ on contracts. If Primus offers ADSL2+ before my contract expires in 6 months time, can I transfer my existing contract onto that 12 months, ie only have to extend total commitment time by 6 months (It's not like I haven't been with Primus for ages already...)?

A couple of interesting thoughts about the new broadband webpage... Firstly the website has quite a few bugs - I use the latest version of Firefox 2.0 and when I hover the mouse over the tabs, it creates a strikethrough effect making it a little harder to read the text on the tabs.

Also Mick, I notice that you've listed here on the forums which exchanges are currently enabled, but maybe that info should also be available on the website (a link somewhere on the ADSL2+ page would make it easy to find). And it can be updated as new exchanges are fibred, so people don't have to keep asking on here...

A note to those asking on here if their exchange is enabled: It's much easier (and faster to get a response) to use the livechat service on the Primus website.

They have no clue what the heck is going on here. Expect it as a Christmas present is my advice, anything earlier is a bonus.

PS - did you not read my previous post? It's easier to use Primus Livechat to get answers...

But I wouldn't have minded the wait, I wasn't very optimistic of it happening any time soon anyway. Adelaide always gets everything last.

You got lucky. The odds of us both being on the same exchange are pretty low.

Anyway, I was officially told that they aim to have everything done by November, but given their track record and that they don't actually have records of which exchanges are being fibred when, I seriously doubt the accuracy of their response.

I agree that SA gets everything last, but in this instance, it's probably because it's mostly old people who'd be on the Hampstead exchange, and most of them don't care about ADSL2+ (or even the internet at all), so Primus is in no hurry to fibre our exchange. They're doing them based (loosely) on the number of Primus customers on the exchange (again, most of the old people around here are probably still with Telstra...).

The website was optimised for Internet Explorer. Firefox seems to have issues with a few sites including the Primus one. You should still have a copy of Internet Explorer you could use to view sites that Firefox has issues with.

I viewed the page at home using Safari and it seemed to work fine.

The exchanges are not listed on the Primus site as we would rather our customers contact us to ask. This way we can offer the customer other options like another ADSL1 plan while they wait rather then the customer see their exchange isn't on the site and just go to another ISP.

That is what the aim is. There is a list of ETA for exchanges that we have available. Not all exchanges are on it as these would be exchanges with no dark fibre.

They're doing them based (loosely) on the number of Primus customers on the exchange (again, most of the old people around here are probably still with Telstra...).

This is not true. They are being done in order of dark fibre available with our vendor. If PIPE or another vendor has dark fibre available we can use this fibre, if there is no dark fibre then it is alot more difficult to do this.

Primus are not doing it on number of customer in that exchange as the fact we have a DSLAM in there in the first place means it was worth while putting that DSLAM there.

No DSLAM in Kellyville yet...

You should see new ADSL1 plans soon as we are in negotiations with Telstra Wholesale to offer 8000 speeds on their DSLAMs, this would mean the port fees for 256, 512, and 1500 may change which would trigger a price change.

Is it just me, or does the last string of entries indicate that there is a need for people to know what is happening in their area, and more importantly, that it's probably more efficient to have a "status of upgrades" web page, rather than Mick replying to each and every "what about my exchange" query...

Wouldn't have a clue. That's something the legal and management teams would be negotiating with Telstra Wholesale about as it would mean changing the Wholesale contract between Primus and Telstra.

I would only know of the new plans by Marketing 1 day before they are released to the public.

i am praying that something good happens because i wont ever be able to get adsl2+ on my crummy exchange so all i can hope for is that they make adsl1 prices cheaper or more downloads for the same price.

The problem is in most cases its out of our hands, so we don't have much info on the schedule, the impression I get is that the majority will be done pretty much all at once by Optus & PIPE (as most of the exchanges we have DSLAM's in Optus or PIPE already have fibre to) and the remainder will be done by the end of the year.

It would help but with ADSL, ISPs rarely post hardware updates on the web. Even when we consult over the phone, the answer is always the same "sometime in the future". It happened with the Berwick South exchange as I called up Optus (which said I had ADSL), Bigpond (which said I didn't) and the consultant basically said I was pretty much "stuffed" for who knows how long. And Primus finally said: "maybe two months, maybe 6 months or a year" but at least they came back last week and said I would have ADSL by TODAY!?!? What the....? Maybe it's because I complained to my local member!! Do they have any power to make Telstra update an exchange? I think that when it comes to technical transparency, we as consumers are all left in the dark about what really happens.

That exchange would do upto 2000 due to the backhaul out of that exchange. You wouldn't get the full 8000 out of it.

They won't put a status update on the main website.

This way you will have customers call us asking and we could offer them an ADSL2+ service while they wait and you have the opertunity to advise alternatives services on offer while the exchange is being upgraded rather than potential customers viewing that the exchange has an ETA of a month so they just go to another ISP.

Going by the very low number of Primus customers that use Whirlpool, I don't mind saying yes or no when given the name of an exchange :-)

Hi Mick,
In that case, I would like to ask about my exchange, Karingal Vic.

As an aside, I believe I am actually on another sub-exchange, Langwarrin. I know this because an ex-telstra Linesman I know personally, told me he did the exchange databases for Telstra. He thinks these got lost in the system, as when he asked telstra himself as a potential ADSL customer, they told him he was ineligible because he was on the Karingal exchange (indicated by the phone number prefixes). Eventually after some disagreement he told the call centre which database to look under and they did find he was on the Langwarrin exchange. They asked him how he could know that. After he of course already explained that he did these databases himself!

Mick I have a question. I have been a iprimus customer now for years now on the Wantirna, Vic exchange. I was originally on the 8000 1 GB plan, I recently upgraded to the 1500 6GB plan to get ADSL2+. I have been told that Wantirna is not currently able to support ADSL2+ but when it is upgraded am eligable for upgrade to ADSL2+ at the same price. My question is why can't my line be set to 8000 in the meantime until ADSL2+ is available.
cheers

It is because our vendor does not have a fibre run out to Sandringham... meaning they would need to lay fibre to this exchange. Meaning doing a full cable lay to this exchange and if there isn't enough DSL connections there that can be potentually upgraded to ADSL2+ it wouldnt be commercially viable for PIPE or Optus to lay fibre to that exchnage.

The sites I have listed already have fibre with PIPE or Optus so it is alot easier to have these connected.

Is there a reason why only QLD, VIC and NSW are getting done, or is it the usual "Nobody cares about SA" reason again?

I'm also confused about Maxmudge's situation. If he lives in Highett, why is he on the Sandringham exchange? Surely he'd be better off (and be able to get ADSL2+ for that matter) if he were put on a closer exchange...

Mick.
I got off the phone with a switched on techie, (problems with voip, another story, but anyway), he said that my exchange (Seaford, VIC) will be able to support ADSL2+ before christmas, but not due to a fiber upgrade.

He more or less said that the line cards in my exchange are not adsl2+, and that the hardware upgrade to ADSL2+ will be done before any fiber backhaul, and that it would be able to support ADSL2+ speeds even without the backhaul upgrade.

So with that said, are these scheduled upgrades due to be a line-card upgrade, or fiber backhaul ?

You cant just move someone from one exchange to another... you would physically have to dig and lay a new cable from their house all the way to another exchange which won't happen and would cost thousands.

The problem with Sandringham has nothing to do with Primus. The problem is no ISP other than Telstra are in Sandringham as there would be no fibre runs yet and too expensive to lay one when the amount of ADSL1 customers would be too low to make it viable.

Sandringham Exchange and Highett are about 5km apart so even if it was physically possible to move someone to another exchange your cable length would be that long you wont get decent speeds anyways.

The Telephone or PSTN Network is run by Telstra and they will not move someone to another exchange. You may like to contact Telstra and they will advise you why it is not possible.

Not at all... Remember that Primus is planning to have ALL DSLAMs fibred.

The list i provided is just the ones i have... those are not the only exchanges that will be done they are just the ones that have dates right now. Obviously those exchanges already have dark fibre from exchange to the data center.

All DSLAMs in SA will be fibred the ETAs just haven't been posted yet cause Primus would not have been given one from our vendor...

I'm sure someone will put an ADSL2+ DLSAM there eventually, Optus will probably be the first to do it because of their plans to move all their customers off the Telstra Wholesale network and be done with Telstra Wholesale for good.

And of course if Optus goes in there, you'll have a choice of a few providers because the Optus DSLAM network is wholesaled to a number of providers, and Primus will probably be one of them in the near future.

Thinking of moving to 2+. I have a question for Mick or Rory about shaping - are you shaped for only the portion of the day - peak or off peak - you have exceeded your quota (like Netspace), OR shaped for the whole day if you exceed either peak or off peak (like iiNet)?

Primus hasn't put that into effect yet (so you won't have peak and off peak at all, just a total download limit), however when it is put into practice, I'd also like to know that. Also, what speed will it be shaped to? 128kbps or 64kbps (or heaven forbid any slower)?

Any word on this exchange...
It is the 9th highest popular exchange (For ADSL2+ requests) in Australia according to 'adsl2exchanges.com.au'.

A Primus rep told me that Sydenham is on the list for ADSL2+, could you confirm this at all?
If so, any ETA?

It is the 1st most popular exchange for ADSL2+ requests in Australia according to the adsl2exchanges website. Optus is full now and would be good for Primus to put one there. (if there are enough people and demand i guess)

Question for Mick

Your list shows that Paddington, South Brisbane, Valley and Woolloongabba exchanges in Brisbane are all active for ADSL2+. These could be termed the "near CBD" exchanges.

You also list Mt Gravatt, Toowong, Bulimba, Eight Mile Plains and Sherwood as coming in October. These are probably the next group of exchanges in terms of distance from the CBD.

So my question is - what is planned for the four CBD exchanges, namely Charlotte (which I live next door to and am connected to!), Edison, Roma Street and Spring Hill?
