Telstra's GSM network supports EDGE (It's just a faster version of GPRS)

These are the generic settings... no idea how to change them on the iPhone though :-)

Telstra's APN: telstra.wap
Telstra's proxy server: 10.1.1.181 port 80
Telstra's WAP home page: wap.telstra.com/wap

MMS APN: telstra.mms
MMS proxy server: 10.1.1.180 port 80
MMS home page: mmsc.telstra.com:8002

No probs :-)

Get yourself a data pack if you're going to be doing a lot of data with your iPhone. The default charging rate is a hefty $15.36/Mb.

Will definately go with the data pack option. For Telstra, and considering that I am on prepaid, they are quite generous
(www.telstra.com.au/telst...packs/browse.htm)

$29 for 70MB will do me fine

Hi. I'm running an iPhone on Telstra and can confirm Edge works (albeit slowly). In Settings/General/Network/Edge you need to put in APN: telstra.internet
Leave username/password blank

I also seemed to be able to use EDGE OK with telstra.wap as the APN too. Not sure if there's a speed difference.

iphone mechanic...
Have you subsequently noticed a difference in performance, telstra.internet versus telstra.wap...
I have set up an iPhone using telstra.internet, the setting provided with my Telstra GPRS Account, and it works just fine [I suspect faster on iPhone versus my O2 XPhone II]

For other iPhone users, EGDE Setup for an existing Telstra GRPS Acount is a breeze.

Thanks for the warning, I will upgrade my account Telstra Data Account.

You mean easy on the phone itself, or easy on the account?

I rang telstra this morning to get one of the $10/month browsing packs added to my account. But they said that was for 3G/NextG phones only and I wasn't currently listed as having one. They said changing that setting would affect my ability to browse on non-3G phones, so I suggested they not do it yet before I research a bit more.

So if telstra change their end to think I have a 3G phone, will my iphone stop being able to access EDGE?

nope- getting a 3G plan will still mean you will be able to access 2G services such as EDGE.

Have fun

MMS is not supported on the iphone, there are some third party apps that allow you to send mms, but by default it has no MMS client inbuilt.

For poeple in Australia trying to set up mms on your Iphone.
1. Download the application by Just add swirlyspace.com/SwirlySpace.xml as a source in Installer.
2. Then go to instal and go into swirly space and intal application
3. After installation you must RESTART your iPhone
4. Setting for Telstra are:
MMsc and Proxy Server Settings
MMSC: mmsc.telstra.com:8002
Proxy: 10.1.1.180

MMS-specific APN Settings
APN: telstra.internet
Username: (leave blank)
Password: (leave blank)

((You may need to restart your phone for settings to work))

Enjoy MMS on your Iphone!

Yes, I have a couple of old Telstra accounts (one prepaid, the other postpaid) that were activated well before Edge was added to the GSM network.

I can confirm that both SIMs work fine and Edge fires up without any modification to my Motorola V6 Maxx phhone (except changing the network band to 900/1800MHz).

However, Edge is PAINFULLY slow compared with NextG and only seems to be marginally better than regular GPRS. Tortoise speeds such as this would certainly take all the shine off iPhone ownership as far as I am concerned. No hope of watching TV services, for example.

I will happily wait for the 3G version of iPhone, which I've heard will be released into the Australian market in time for the Christmas 2008 shopping frenzy.

I'm new here, please be nice

Hey.
Old thread, but I'm a new user and thought I'd have a go...
I've just put a telstra pre-paid SIM in my iPhone, after using a vodafone pre-paid account and not using any of the EDGE functions when away from my wireless network.
I got the $5 data pack just to try it out and all of a sudden it's used up $30 of credit and that's after sending about 6 texts, but sending and receiving quite a few emails.
I'm thinking that maybe I need to call and let them know about the 3G capable phone someone mentioned and maybe that will register the data pack... otherwise I'm a bit lost!
Cheers,
Todd.
